Hi everyone
I have a fiat scudo 1.9 2004
Back in December when we had about a week of minus temperatures ,I had my van sat on my drive waiting for brake repairs, so It wasn't being used . I then went to start it up and my water light came on . All my pipes were frozen. I left it till later afternoon and then I noticed a bit of ice around the expansion tank , then
realising ,I had no anti freeze in my cooling system. I topped it and it started fine later that day but since then I've had no heating .
I've had a coolant flush done and also I had the matrix replaced hoping this would fix it but its still not blowing any warm /hot air
Another mechanic told me , its likely to be the water pump that's had it due to the freezing and eventually it will start to overheat if I don't get it replaced. Every so often I can feel a blast of warm air but only for a few seconds . He said its around 4 hours labour plus water pump /timing belt kit
I just don't want to folk out another few hundred if its not that and if anyone can advise me on anything else it could be ??
I guess as it's done 109 ,000 miles I'd probably be best having the timing belt done I've been told
I just hope I can get some heating
Thanks

I lived with my old van having lukewarm heating and I know it's horrible to live with. No heating must be worse
What does the temperature gauge say? Is it getting up to temperature as normal?
You could also feel the coolant pipes that go into the cabin at the back of the engine. Do they get warm? If not then you won't get any heat in the blowers

If you've not had the timing belt / water pump done or you don't know when it was last done, then get it done. I had mine done last year and it cost about £350. But it's peace of mind stuff. If you lose that belt you might as well scrap the van. Finding another engine and getting it fitted will cost quite a lot more than a few hundred.
If the timing belt / water pump, was done recently (or within 70,000 miles I think) and you are 100% sure it isn't that, then a cheap £100 diesel heater might solve the heating issue and be cheaper. I would have thought if the water pump is knackered you will start to see the temperature gauge hitting the red line pretty quickly.
You might be able to change it yourself if you have the tools and kit. I know some on here have done their own changes, but for me I would rather pay an expert to do it. Some tasks are just better left to people with adequate experience. Simple tasks like brakes and basic/mid level maintenance are within my experience level, but complex engine repairs (Haynes manual 4-5 star difficulty level), not so much.

with the engine ruining, can you see coolant flow through the header tank? if you can, you will have flow through the heater matrix as the header tank is "in line" with the heater matrix. the heater adjusts a flap in the heater matrix housing to divert air though the heater matrix or around it. coolant is never restricted or turned off when you have the blowers set to cold. the heater matrix is always (should be) hot.
on the heater circuit, the hot coolant exits the engine block at the back nearest the gearbox. a lump of dirt/old gasket seal can flow out of this outlet up the pipe and get stuck at the narrowing where it enters the header tank. you can just pull the pipe off and "dig" it out with a screw driver.
just to note, on the XUD, DW8 and DW10 (HDi) the heater matrix circuit is very important to not block or restrict flow. its designed to always have flow run through it to prevent hot spots in the cylinders and head. so if you do not have flow it does need looking at.
i boutght a 306 sw with the mighty XUD from a friend for £50 who had it in the family from near new (some 20 years). in the whole time they had it, the father said that it was never serviced. i can tell you i think they were not kidding when i did that oil change. it was not pretty. i think i poured an extra 2L of red diesel into the oil filler to try to thin down what was once oil just so it would drain out the sump plug.
the coolant system on that was totally blocked up with no heaters until i went around it and unblocked everything manually. after the heaters were red hot!

Words of wisdom: Internally rust proof the sills and subframe! both skins!!. There's always user serviceable parts inside. "Oh that shouldn't have happened".
