So I finally got off my ass and did a detailed inspection of the turbo hoses and voila, found a tear in the intercooler hose.
I ordered a new one from ebay and all being well that will arrive tomorrow or thurs. I also did a patch for the existing hose, which was basically created by using Fire Gum to seal the tear (it works bloody well on exhausts so might work in this situation), covered that with a piece of bike inner tube, wrapped it in duct tape and secured it with jubilee clips. If it holds for a couple of days that would be sweet or at the very least cuts down on pressure loss. It might not be the complete problem/solution, but it explains where all that oil has been coming from that's all over the bottom of the engine.
So later on i will test the van and see if its any better. Will post again when I know.

Good that you found the problem. I bet it flies now too.
I know I was wondering why mine wasn't performing like I expected when I got it. Lots of oil coming out too. Turns out the intercooler was leaking, low boost etc.
Was loads nippier when that was fixed

It seems that I now have boost. It's still not perfect, but its better. It is probably still leaking a little. Went up a hill that I struggled to go up, in third gear, at 30mph, a week back. It went up in fourth gear while accelerating to 50mph. I consider it a success for now. Also engine braking seems to have been re-established.
Next problems are the brakes and gearbox oil change.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, just looking for a little assistance please. I started at the same place as Pathfinder, followed all activities as suggested by John, here's where I'm up to, oh I should say this is a Scudo 2.0 JTD
P0243 on a basic code reader.
Loss of power, occasional black smoke, engine gets hot, and then stalls, it does start knocking when it gets warm. (Diesel knock?)
Hoses checked, no visible splits or holes
MAF removed, no change.
Actuator solenoid vacuum removed, no change.
Actuator and EGR solenoids swapped, no change.
Any clues where to go next would be much appreciated please.

The EGR got tossed around as a possible problem when i was trying to work through mine, but it's in a pain in the ass place, on the back of the engine. Same with a broken turbo.
Black smoke? Check the air filter first and the assorted pipes leading to it and beyond it for blockages. It might be a knackered turbo too, but at this point I am going way out of my depth. The guy with the best ideas will be JohnDragonMan.
I would say the engine getting hot and stalling is a major problem. Sure they get hot, but do you have a coolant problem. When mine was acting up it was never getting that hot.
I hope yours isn't a failing/failed turbo. They are expensive and a real pain to get off. If I hadn't found the tear in my intercooler hose, the next thing i was going to do was remove the turbo and see if it was operating correctly. I suspect many of these jobs are easier if you remove the entire engine from the van. But just doing that is a complete mindf**k in itself.

Thanks Pathfinder, I ran it with the airbox and MAF removed! So doubt it's that, let's just say it's so hot the rad cooling fan cut in! It now just gets up to temperature and beyond when running to the point of stalling, which I suspect is the engine close on seizing. Top and bottom rad hoses both at the same temperature to the touch though!

I don't think the overheating is related to that error. The overheating says more coolant problem, maybe a blockage or the pump needs changing. If the fan is working the problem would appear to be upstream of that. I would probably drop the coolant out and flush the system with a hosepipe. Then start over with new coolant. Unless someone else has a better idea.
