Camper rewiring

Finally finished a complete rewire, using the space between the sliding door and kitchen units. I threw in a few upgrades to make it worthwhile :-)

Re: Camper rewiring

Oh nice! I've always wondered about where to put an electrical panel where it won't occupy space, that's the perfect spot

Even showing off with your 3 pin 240V plugs!

What's that USB circuit board in the middle?

Re: Camper rewiring

Well off course i'm showing off, cos nowon else gives a feck.
So the old panel under the cupboards took up a cubic foot, was impossible to access and was a total mess. So needed to be done - may have overegged it a bit - but hey ho.
The gubbins at the bottom is a pi zero with a alfa dongle thing set up as wifi repeater with a usb ssd drive  set up  for a wifi smb share - I've had a few goes in the past wit this setup with mixed success.

Re: Camper rewiring

That's the most networking I've seen in a van haha. So you have a wifi repeater to extend the range of...- assumedly your house wifi? So that you can access...? Nah I'm lost

What do you have that all set up for?

Re: Camper rewiring

We usually stay in campsites, and quite often there will be wifi. However the wifi might only be around reception, in which case the Alfa AWUS036NHA will allow me to pick up the signal, and redistribute it around the van for phones & tablets. it also means that the password only needs to setup once. In some cases you only get access for one device, so we can use multiple devices with this setup. Some sites will give you an hour for free each day, so I can change the mac address of the wifi adapter, and get another hour if needed.
Maybe less of an issue nowadays with better roaming options, but when I first set it up 10 years ago, it was very useful.
Over the years I've tried to use this as a media server, with poor results, because when the fridge kicks in the inductive load caused a dip in the supply, that was enough to reset the pi. The new lithium battery will fix this, and will stop the lights flickering too.  Replaced the HDD with an SSD, so I'll be able to stream to the radio, and the wife will be able to watch stuff on her tablet when we are on the move.  It might even work :-)

Re: Camper rewiring

These days (Internet) is cheap enough to have a 5G phone, with one or two unlimited SIM's (I currently pay £16 from three business, there  are similar deals about from other providers) flick on tethering and most of the times it works good enough (eat my shorts Melon Usk tongue and stick your Starlink to offshore cruisers)  lol

Re: Camper rewiring

Yes, things have got better, and I use an ID Mobile sim for all of my internet. Cost £14 a month for 300gb, which rolls over each month. After cash redemptions it will work out at £7 a month. However once in the EU, its 30gb, which is still ok for browsing, however it will only last for 2 months, when they start charging extra. Got a couple of 15gb Lebara sims, that I can use as well, but these will stop after 2 months.

Re: Camper rewiring

Great deals there. I'm so used to rubbish speeds, 10Mbs would be fine.
Tied to ID for 2 years, but at least they do have some roaming allowances.
