Hello Gents and Ladies,
MK1 user and abuser, as you might have learned, but lately few more things are developing in a bad way with it, so much so, that soon I'll be forced to change it.
Would love all the stereotypes and opinions, as long as it's budget conscious?
Looking and getting slightly depressed as how dear they are, whilst I need a bigger one and ideally ULEZ compliant... TBH thinking of getting and old banger like X5 with darkened windows etc
MK2?- well, honestly they rust as much, if not more, than MK1, hardly any bigger (a MUST)
VW Transporter MK3-4 too expensive to buy, extournate to maintain
Traffic type of thingies- INJECTORS, most are run to near death, that are on for sale
M$ Vito- the ones in-near budget are (not MK1) and MK2-3 - made in Spain, some are literally having cables to hold the engines in- RUST
Transits MWB- unsafe to have anything in them, like s4it for the flies (thieves), bit wide, bit thirsty, rusty
Anything I'm missing for a £1- 1.5k budget?

Hello Gents and Ladies,

Not that I have seen. Not been looking desperately but I haven't seen anything I would trust, even for £2.5k. I do get daily ebay reports of all new listings under £5,000 but not been tempted yet.
I would grab another MK1 TD if a particularly good one turned up though.

I come back to the same statement every time. How bad can it be that it's not worth repairing?
Sure it's probably beyond economic repair, but as you've found replacing it ain't gonna be cheap
£1.5k into your existing van, or £5k+ on a replacement, similarly second hand one?

Curious to know about mk2 rust weak points.
I would say that there more space in a mk2, mainly due to the sqaure sides and the little extra length. But thats from a camper perspective I guess.
But the tech change from a mk1 to anything newer, and you are going to get screwed Built for 20k servicing, but not designed for maintenance, and life expectancy of maybe 100k. Fine for fleets but not great for individuals. Sadly the end of an era really

That's quite the bunch! The best of a bad bunch I'd say is the Vito assuming no major issues. Maybe the 1.6 Mk2 Scudo
Literally all the others are non-runners, so has to raise the question of why scrap one spares-repairs to buy another?
LWB mhmhmhmhhhhhh!!!!!!
If ever I had to replace mine, I'd definitely be eyeing a LWVB Mk2

You do make sense, but rust on mine... Unfinished business with few other things, then literally too small to fit all gear in, that's needed... Sounds like throwing good money after the bad, kinda seems like investing in a new vehicle would make sense and this god damn ULEZ makes alot off difference, as couple of jobs, I've already declined, just because off that
It's not like I'm getting one or the other this week or the next, but am tempted to go and see some of them, chuck an offer and perhaps start repairs to get in to shape, to serve me for few years in the future
Mind you, I'm not even pretending to be mechanic, at least, I don't want to, as I've no skills, nor facilities, but it's clear, I need to make contingency plans.
Yeah, that LWB, investing some £500-700 would/could/maybe make me happy, but you never know what else would come up with needing to be able to rely on.
Vito?- nah, driven, looked at few years ago- damn they do rust, and not just panels, structurally, esp around engine and mounts...
Dunno, the lot to consider, dunno, if I'm just going to jump the gun, dunno, if that just exactly the time for yet, but post Jan blues, it often is the case, that bangers, get grabbed, and absolute mingers are left to try to siff through

Just back...
1.5 hrs drive one way, half an hour wasted checking it all- round and an hour and a 1/4 to get back.
The lad, that is selling his??? van at first seemed to be struggling to speak in English, but as I got there become clear, he is most obnoxious arrogant type, I've met for years.
Findings:
Rusted more than mine (6 years younger) Mk2...
Engine smokes like crazy on a start up, although water filler bottle doesn't look like gasket gone, but mileage is 100% clocked, as mine with higher mileage smokes less, could be whatever- not really interested TBH
side doors misaligned so much, that NS (passenger) side doesn't even shut first time round
ANW, glad wasted my time (diesel) and not my money, as it isn't worth anything, clueless how he's got MOT for it (6 months remaining) and in pictures looked ever so nice...
Rant over, onwards and upwards, but now, I shall be way more careful with MK2's and especially those dodgy type of sellers...

TBH, so many shades of white on that van (was cloudy anyway), I'm certain it was a write off at some stage, meaning, should've done online check on that too.
Now, I'm seriously peed off at myself to not to have checked SN numbers and things like it, as he only had a copy of V5... whole can of possible worms (scenarios there), could've taken pics of SN's etc and given a heads up to FUZZ to "inquire" about it all... as in the "yard" there were other 3 cars and two vans, that he wasn't saying if they are his or not etc etc.
Just as I said, "done with", he clearly is even dodgier, than just that one van was.

Herm... gone off mate, gonna do one more or couple of viewings, bur funnily enough there are whole lot less of them at rock bottom prices... apart from few death traps...
But yes, over the moon, my MK1 still works, still got bit use out in it left, wasn't "forced-rushed" in to just getting it... phew!

Does it have to be a van?
If mine blew up tomorrow, I would need something instant and importantly, that I could reasonably sleep in. I think appropriate small van's would be out of the question but there are so many more large estates and people carriers. I haven't checked any out but have my fingers crossed that I could find something with a few years left in it for half what I might need for a van. Otherwise it will be a buss pass for me.

Yes and no.
For once, if I'm unsure what will be needed, I'm struggling to get the lot in already
yes, MK2 is ever so slightly but bigger...
Thingies like Ulyse, Synergie etc... dunno, didn't think off too much, although have considered BMW X5, and few other bigger 4x4's, even I'd end up with worse of all worlds.
Got me thinking, which is not necessarily good thing, I might do something irrational... might not

Promise is made, so here it goes:
1'st van inspected was literally money pit- death trap, rusty CLOCKED, dodgy seller, etc etc
(couple of sellers stopped responding, once they've heard right straight questions asked)
2'nd bus variant, was said to have "electrical" issue, but in reality was knackered, so that once started (was already hot), as I got there, got told that sometimes doesn't pick up revs... my a4se!- injectors gone 100%! as even at (warm) low revs was sounding "lumpy", as I only drove it to the end of a garden and back, turbo was dead, as smoke apart nothing was happening suspension was clanking and asking price of £1400 wasn't negotiable...
3'rd van drove to near Brighton (nice drive BTW), but bloke was at least semi-honest, that unless I've got great mechanical skills, I shouldn't buy it, even it was priced at £1100, he has given up in putting the money in, but kicking tires aside, I barely looked at it, as it was questionable, if I'd manage to get it back on it's own engine, whilst him managing to start it of a jump-starter engine was squealing, rattling, clanking so much- (the 1.6 HDI variant)... hence I later begun to contemplate in changing 1.6 engine with another capacity or a different car bits all together.
As much as the Traffic type of vans are infamous for a need for injectors replacement (~£1000) jobbie, as much it is infamous for gear boxes failing, it has become clear, that they are of the same "quality" as MK2 onwards vehicles and the lot has the lot of common components- faults, that are as dear to repair as the other.
For now then, I'll be apologising to my old tart, get her new oils etc, try to patch up, what's not so good but I'm keeping an open mind what should I go for in near future

Hard to argue, but it isn't just mot issue, she's bit just bit too small, my junk girth mainly, ends up hard work to get what's needed, when I need to, without getting half of the load off first

Got to treat them RIGHT, not necessarily too nice, just fair is sufficient

When i get rid of mine I'm looking for an old school Ford Galaxy, something around 2005-2007, before the dodgy gearboxes. Ideally 100-130k in mileage and must have cruise control. I will be making another micro camper, but with a smaller toilet, probably one of those Thetford Porta Potti 145 that are allegedly 30cm high. i don't think my 365 will work as it is somewhat bigger.
Since Sheffield got a LEZ, I haven't been able to go into town and even getting out to the motorway is a veritable pig to do. Basically touch the inner ring road and you get charged. Cars are obviously exempt. I also want better fuel economy. My parents used to have a Galaxy of that age and they were pulling over 60mpg on the motorway and that would suit me fine. I currently get a bit over 40mpg I think if I drive at around 55-60mph.
