Hello, New to French stuff!

Hello, Im new to French stuff!

I just picked up my 56 plate Dispatch with WAV convertion. Which is the reason I picked it up.

It has 36k on the clock 1.9D.

Theres a few odds in ends need fixing on it, but over all seems good.

When I drove it back from Manchester back to South Wales 6 hours ish

I noticed
1. Passanger window does not work (elec) which I need to fix as the dog will not be happy with me.
2. Exhaust is incredibly loud (above 50) its the next day my ears are still ringing. (The stereo on full cannot compete with the Exhaust)
3. The remote part of the central locking dont work (dont really care, works fine on the key)
4. One side door does not work on the central locking (the previous owner side he changed the lock, I bet he used a non central locking one)

Other than that Drives fine

Re: Hello, New to French stuff!

Hello
I had to look up what a WAV conversion was
(wheelchair accessible vehicle)
Ahh I see, this probably explains why it has such low miles on it
Looks tidy though and 36K is nothing for these as they can reputedly clock up
big miles if looked after.

I'm new to these vans myself and have a 2006 2.0 HDI Expert
No posh electric windows or mirrors but I do have air con
which is nice.
The central locking is pretty easy to test and check, I fixed two of my doors a while back.

6 hours from Manc to S Wales?
Did you get lost or stop at every services for tea and buns?  lol  lol

Re: Hello, New to French stuff!

A few people have told me "slow as hell, but you can drive it to the moon and back"

I wouldn't call it posh only has electric front windows and Central Locking everything else is manual incudling the wheelchair ramp.

Yeah 6 hours yeah mad

Well the story from the guy I got it from is. That he got it from someone that used it once in a blue moon, Then he got it to transport is mother around who died 2 weeks after getting it. so he never drove it apart from where is got it from.

So I took it easy for the first 50 miles as its hasn't had a run in a long time by the sounds of thing. Stopped at a services and give it once over checking for leaks, did it use any oil etc.

Then I stabbed it on the motorway till I got to the M50, but I got stuck in traffic on the way. Where you change from the M6 to the M5 as there was football on somewhere nearby according to the to martix signs. After that, a line closed on the m5 as someones electric car needed a nap in lane 3.

After stopping in services just before the M50 and finally eating something and checking it over again. I just chugged back at 55/60 as my ears couldnt take it anymore.

Re: Hello, New to French stuff!

If it were new to me I'd want to know a few things
A
when was the cambelt/water pump last changed?
I know its only done 36k but time is an issue as well as miles
so if you intend to keep it, I'd suggest looking into that.
Oil and filter change too of course.

B
I took the liberty of looking up the MOT history of yours and see there have been
corrosion advisories on the last few MOTs.
I suggest you check yours over or get it checked before investing serious time and money into it.

I only found out after buying mine in April that they are prone to rotting in various places, mainly sills and sub frames.
I got my local guy to check it out underneath as I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't look myself before buying it.
He says it's in pretty good nick underneath but may need some attention the sills for the next MOT but its nothing too bad/expensive.
This was a relief as I'd already spent time and money servicing and insulating it among other things and want it to hopefully last a while.
I'm lucky to have my mechanic a 2 minute walk away whose always been reliable and not
too expensive so I get him to do jobs I don't want or cant be arsed to do myself.

Get the engine serviced and sort out any corrosion and you'll probably only have around 200,000 miles left on it  lol

Looks perfect. Are you keeping it as a WAV or I notice your avatar looks campervany

Re: Hello, New to French stuff!

That looks bloody nice. I took my old 1.9D down the Black Forest Germany. If you see a hill make a run for it. In Belgium on motorways you can have long straight sections where you see hills ahead. I wound it up to FAF speeds passing all the trucks as sure as hell the buggers will get you on the hill. In Germany going over a small mountain i had to pull over to let a queue of cars past and an Oil tanker. Oh the shame but yeah. Moon and back rounds about right.  Where in South Wales are you? I was in Maesteg three days ago. It was no surprise to say it was pissing down.

There is no Service History with it. Yes I took the gamble, it was well.... I think cheap for one of these at £1600

The Belt looked newish, not cracked or anything the text on it crisp and clear. I will have it changed though

Oil and filter change about 2 weeks ago, the chap had the receipt and the oil filter was spotlessly clean so looks like it had been done. He did say that the rear brakes replaced also which, sticking my head the best I could around the rear wheels they looked new.

Yeah, I did the mot check too. Talk about the front subframe. I priced it up at the garage I use before even going to look at it, I thought the vans cheap enough to offset it if needed.

I did riggle under the front to have a look, corroded yes. No holes though and someone has put waxoil over it, I dont believe it is dangerous. But I did call the garage earlier today to book it in for a once over.

I must admint I didnt check the sills, they looked ok from just walking around it. I was just maybe too focused on that front sub frame.

It will will get all the tlc it needs, especially that its going to be used for. Hauling the missus about and her wheelchair. Not forgetting my best friend the dog smile

The overall plan is this may not be the car we keep for a long time. But a test of concept if a WAV car will work for us, before putting my hand deep in my pocket for a trick new(ish) one. Then again we might end up keeping it if we are really happy with it. As its the only type we have seen with the 3 seats in the front.

Re: Hello, New to French stuff!

as said, cam belt change just due to age more than anything and then buy a few cans of Dynax-s50 and cavity rust proof it.. everywhere. the vehicle its self will last for years.
i can tell you all the common rust spots i fixed on my van. the rear of the sills have 2 sections, make sure to get it into both.
you can get access through the bolt holes that hold the lower sliding door rail on from under the van.
if you poke your finger in the whole you can feel the bolt sticking through but also the 2 skins you can get the dynax spray tube into each one.
one can for each sill, and maybe 2 more cans for other places. the front sub frames are common again they have 2 sections you can get into with the dynax tube.
poke it all the way in and start spraying as you slowly pull the tube out.
i have just done it to a replacement door for my old 90s Fiat Panda 4x4. finding rust free doors for them is almost impossible!
i also recommend doing something with the 2 sections on each rear corner under the bumper. a good clean out with a jet wash and a nice thick coating of some brush on underseal. they are literal places where the rear wheel
flings up all the spray and dirt that get stuck in there and starts rusting it all out. nice to nip it all in the bud before it becomes a problem.

you'll enjoy having it, i know i do. and if you want to go all crazy like me, you can even retrofit aircon into them... but that does take a bit of doing. not impossible though! i even pretty much made a "how to" thread on here haha.
oh and the headlights come apart on these real nice too if you put them in the oven for 10 mins at 80.c. nice if you want to retrofit bi-xenon projector lenses.

sorry forums tism filled eccentric here.

welcome, welcome!

Notice: I have the tendency to void warranties, blow fuses, cause fires, and other fun stuff.
Words of wisdom: Internally rust proof the sills and subframe! both skins!!. There's always user serviceable parts inside. "Oh that shouldn't have happened".

Glad you think so, the condiditon is what made me gamble with the lack of service history.

The outside isnt prefect but i thought really good.

The bonnet, has two dents what look like hand prints, as if someone fell on it.... well i hope thats what is was  lol

and a scuff here and there.

It will be kept WAV for the missus wheelchair. No matter how big of a car/van I get. She always seems to fill it when we go see her family in Devon.

Yeah the weather has been really bad, even had water coming in the house sad Its being sorted though.

I wouldnt say its the slowest car. Ive ever driven, a few years back I had a Hijet 7 seater 1000cc. Now that was dangerously slow.

Added Dynax-s50 to my watch list I do not forget what it is called. I'll add it to my to do list.

I get my hand up the back of the arches dug out the dirt, was not that bad but it all starts somewhere!

Panda parts are always in damand, I think the seat marbella is basically the same car body wise at least. Which may help finding parts.

I'm sure I'll fit in if everyone is Eccentic too smile Think Aircon can wait till I've sorted everything else smile

I've had people ask me "would you keep the van if a repair cost more than it's worth?"

Indeed! With my cars I feel like a caretaker or something.

I may have not jumped ship so early Ken had we had the LWB in the UK. Yeah its only a foot but i would have went up also. I needed larger as my first Expert was a Micro camper and we started to take the dog with us (Rottie) I was going to build a camper out an LDV Pilot but it has an early Peugeot Non turbo engine. Vowed never to buy a Non turbo diesel again so went large with the Convoy.

Stuck around as my second van, the Dispatch was a work van but as my business started to take off i needed a larger van again so that jumped ship also to an LDV but the Maxus. Both are annoyingly lovable vans what can be money pits i must admit, but i think i am middle of the road in a financial way with my two LDV's. The Maxus i dont care about much as i just add any running costs to the customer big_smile

There were always two engines on offer for these vans - a slow one and a fast one

The successor to the DW8 was never the 2.0 HDi. That succeeded the XUD9TE aka 1.9TD
Instead the DW8 1.9D was succeeded (in a later model) by the 1.6 HDi

The issue was that the XUD9TE aka 1.9TD was a Euro 2 engine, so couldn't live on past 2000. That was replaced by the 2.0 HDi
Whereas the DW8 was essentially the non-turbo XUD9 dragged into the Euro 3 era so could live on until it was eventually succeeded by the 1.6 HDi

Mk1 1994-2000 Euro 2
Premium: XUD9TE 1.9TD
Basic: XUD9 1.9D

Mk1 2000-2006 Euro 3
Premium: HDi 2.0

Yeah i was parked up next to one at a bike rally in Holland. I was looking at it thinking just an extra foot in height would be enough  to make a cracking little camper
