Could anyone identify where that thin wire at the back of my alternator should be attached to? It's just sat there on its own and I don't see any terminals sticking out of anywhere with no wire attached.

Dunno if this is helpful?

Appears to be connection modifying going on?

Found a listing for the cables, the pictures might help?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/266966648032 … 9zEALw_wcB

I would offer to take a picture of mine, but its the flat 1.9D so I dunno if it different?

Re: My new van

That post has been quite helpful, thanks.
I had to dash out and check, it seems the battery light on the dash works whether it's connected or not.
When the engine is running the light goes out as it should.
With the engine off I noticed I could hear a relay clicking on and off as I touched the wire off the smaller of the two terminals but also off the motor so it might be a ground for a relay.
I'll have to wait til tomorrow find out though as it's gotten dark now but at least I have a direction to go for tomorrow.

Wahey! I fitted my new 'lower' springs on all four corners. I'm not sure it's all that much lower to be honest but the van definitely feels firmer.
When I stood in the back and bounced before it was very springy and soft now it's much stiffer so I'm fairly pleased that it should be able to handle the motorbikes a bit better now.
I do wonder if the rear springs were so soft as part of the WAV conversion to make it more comfortable for the wheelchair passenger.

Re: My new van

I think you may be right as mine feels quite hard as its mostly running fairly empty.
Just got back from picking up/stuffing an old GL500 in mine and noticed how it feels smoother
with it loaded.

Re: My new van

Just got  back, too knackered to unload it, will take pics tomoz
Its a 1983 that's been in a garage for the last 6 years and it's a bit shabby
Its only got 14,500 on the clocks and I didn't pay much for it
as it belonged to a mate who now lives in Vietnam and only came back to clear out the garage
and practically begged me to buy it.
I thought I was done with the CX/GL range too  hmm

Just looked it up on the dvla site
tax and MOT ran out in 2016  yikes
but at least the MOT history supports the mileage so it may have some good life left in it

I did the opposite! The back end used to feel like rocks when I went over speed bumps. Put some softer springs in and it rides so much more nicely now

Re: My new van

Mine was originally a 6 seater, was yours a panel van? It could also be that the panel vans are sprung to carry more weight than the people carriers.

Re: My new van

Yea that's probably it. Mine was indeed originally a panel van, I got my springs out of a Synergie. So the theory holds

Well if anyone wants my old springs and wants to send a courier or pay postage they're yours, I'm in Ireland. Otherwise I'll give 'em to the scrap man.

Re: My new van

As requested, the old bike in my old van
They tyres were dead flat which made it a sod to get up the ramp
so today I used my home made powerpack to run the pump to inflate them.
Tomorrow a mate's going to come around to help me get it out.
Its a heavy bugger and the big fairing didn't help, we just got it in diagonally despite the partition and
by removing the rear light lens
The numberplate was already broken

Re: My new van

Awesome job!
I've been on the lookout for one of these vans for quite a while and had considered a few with the bulkhead, hauling bikes was my main reason for wanting a van and I had planned on making a cutout just for the front wheel to poke through in the center of the bulkhead to facilitate loading bikes, I would have preferred a panel van originally but the one I got came up cheap locally so I went for it.

OK its a different bike but i just want to sing Purple Rain when i see that big_smile  I did have a CX500 back in the early 90's. Dono what the chain was for as it was push rods but it chewed itself through the engine casing making the bike dead. Probably should have done something sooner about the rattle but i did enjoy my time with the bike.

Re: My new van

Like this one, a mate begged me to buy his ratty old CX in 2000
yes they're ugly af and it looked rough as a bears ass but had a sweet rebuilt engine
when I test rode it I took a strange liking to it
In those days you couldn't give a CX away and I had one more for the next 20 years
and have been all over the UK on one.
Once you understood their features and possible weak points and addressed them
you had a go anywhere, any time, workhorse.
I had a few K100 beemers for touring for few years but still kept a CX
I sold my last CX in 2020 and had no intention of getting another bike
so I'm still undecided what to do with this GL.

I have a 2001 Yamaha Majesty 250 scooter now.
I got it cheap and renovated it to use as a hack and its great fun.

Ah yes, cam chain/tensioner neglect was the main killer on the CX/GL
when the chain wore too much or the tensioner broke, the cam chain would thrash about
chewing lumps out of the casing and put a load of alloy slurry into the oil ways.

Re: My new van

Sorry Wingnut, hijacking your thread here

I can see how the ramp would make loading a bike easier
does it slide underneath the cab or fold up inside?
can you access the 4 hold down points if you want to use ratchet straps?

Re: My new van

No worries man we're all talking about the same motorbike nonsense anyway  lol
The ramp folds in two and stands upright behind the back doors.
I removed the wheelchair belts and straps and am reusing the metal loops they were attached to as my anchor points for straps.

Re: My new van

Just been reading up the V90 ( looks fun!) and found this page which may be of some use or interest to you
If you're anything like me you've probably already scoured the web for any and all info on what ever bike
you have, but I'll add the link just in case as it has parts catalogue and user manuals and stuff

Re: My new van

It's a good site that a great resource, it has serial number lookup too which is handy for identifying what rust bucket I've brought home this time!  lol
I'v had that little scoot for about 15yrs now, I wanted to keep it looking as original as possible but make it a bit wicked, so myself and a mate built a naughty engine for it, and I've upgraded the tyres and shocks too. It's surprised a few lads on bigger bikes which is a good laugh when we meet at the next traffic lights.
It started life with about 3hp, its now just under 25hp and weighs nothing, I love getting out on it!

Re: My new van

Well I managed to lock and mark the camshaft, crankshaft (removed the starter motor) and fuel pump yesterday and I got up early to go at it again, did the idler pulley and waterpump today but had to stop there because the new tensioner came out of the box damaged from the bolt that was packaged with it, I'll try pick one up tomorrow after work, I also dropped the bloody Tx50 bit for the engine mount into the engine bay, I spent ages looking for it with magnets and what not but its vanished: D
20241020_103628.jpeg

The old waterpump had a lot of sealant on it,
I didn't use any, the instructions said not to.
