Bench swivel seat?

I really want to get the passenger bench seat to swivel, but wondering how possible that is?

My mechanic isn't keen, doesn't think it's safe to make them swivel, so I may need to find another mechanic or do it myself.

Someone suggested I just turn it round and that seemed it might be a simple solution until I realised the legs aren't symmetrical to the seat.

I found instructions on eBay (above link) - has anyone used it and able to indicate how useful it will be?

Re: Bench swivel seat?

Sounds optimistic, but if they claim it works for the Expert (which model year?) then I guess it's possible, if questionably safe

I wonder which parts they recommend. If the instructions are general, then it's easy to say "Attach some bolts to some swivel plate"

I'd be interested to see what it suggests

Re: Bench swivel seat?

Very interesting.  I would need to see one done before I would fork out for instructions.

I would also be more concerned about those spindly supports that the swivels myself.  The space is nice but I would want some cross bracing.
The swivel should surely be locked and have the weight of seat and potentialy two people mechanicaly supported by more than just the swivel when in use.  (Although the single swivels in my expert are not.  It appears that apart from a bolt to prevent accidental rotation, the only solid conection twixt seat and base is whatever the spindle is made from.  yikes

Personaly I would pay whatever it cost for swivel front seats.
The increase in usable van space and comfortable seating is a revelation, imo.  You practicaly gain almost a 1/3rd extension!  And this is of even more value in such a small van.  Depending on how you use your van of course.

I am currently looking at a mid engine van which until now I had dissmised for it not being feasable to have swivels.  But I have found that there are swivel seats available but due to complexity, are £300ish each fitted!  That has virtualy made my mind up to at least check it out though.  I value the space enough to at least get one done even at that price, and I am as tight as anyone.

It's a Bongo/Freda btw, please don't ban me.  smile

Re: Bench swivel seat?

While its quite possible, I wouldn't pay for those instructions
as the whole ad has the whiff of snake oil to me and the vehicle in that vid isnt a MK1

Is it doable? yes of course! if money's no object we can start tomorrow.

Next you'll be going for a lowered VW Transporter with tinted windows and double exhausts!

I looked at those Bongos actually. Very cool, but I gather the auto gearbox is awful for reliability, and MPG is... 25 MPG is good

Re: Bench swivel seat?

Don't know about the gearbox.  I think rot and cylinder heads are biggest problem.  True re mpg but I don't do the millage I used to.

It's cheap and re-sellable though so I will at least be mobile to look out for another TD Expert, or wait to get mine fixed.

Re: Bench swivel seat?

Update on this - and damn, I missed the porn spam!

I found the website and it was £20 there rather than£25 - website overall looks solid if a little outdated (which can be a good sign as it's not likely to be genuine!)
Have chatted with the staff and feel confident it might solve my issue, so will hopefully be trying to fathom out the guidance over the next week or so.
If I don't do it their way I hope to have better awareness of the solution that will work for me. Will update!

Do they suggest/recomend suppliers for required parts?
If they are confident re costs they should be able to.

Re: Bench swivel seat?

Further update - it doesn't solve my particular issue, but may be useful for others

it's designed so you turn the seat around when you park up, and turn it back when you drive off. And when the seat is forward facing it needs extra bolts to hold it in place; from what I can tell you need to crawl under the van to do them up.

Mobility issues make this a no for me. I was hoping for a way to have the seat backwards most of the time, and I imagine it's possible to adjust the design to make that work, but I've put a halt on this idea for now.

Regarding parts -they include links to all the parts they suggest.

Re: Bench swivel seat?

Alright if you don't need to swivel frequently I suppose, as long as you can drive with it in reverse mode

I can see a use for the occasional passenger(s)

Wouldn't it be as easy to just clean and grease the standard floor bolts?

You'd have to lift the entire seat, and probably bring it outside to rotate it. I envisage many scratched panels

I'd see it as an enhancement, but not a revolution (heh)

Re: Bench swivel seat?

Yes, partial tongue in cheek Ken.

An ideal solution would be like some old bus (and dare I say tram) seats where the whole back support pivoted for and aft to give a seat in either direction.

Would take some good engineering for crash safety and seat belts, etc.
But I bet there would be a good market for them.

Or a more robust version of this:-

Re: Bench swivel seat?

Mine has a single passeneger seat and that would be fairly straight forward to mount on a swivel
but a swivelling double seat would take a more serious design time and effort (and money of course)
to make it fit for purpose and safe.

I'd like to see a double passener seat or two seperate passenger seats actually fitted and swivelling
in place before I'd believe it, because looking at mine, I really dont see much room for it unless they are child seats.

Translator error smile
Jumpy is too narrow for rotation double seat. But about 25 years ago I had in Ducato two person seat. It had special hinge, he was falling over seat on the backrest. Base was stabile, upper part movable. Something like REIMO system in 90'. All construction DIY.  Maybe this is the way of your search?
