2003 Jumpy (Dispatch) - Cranks a long time to start

Never had this issue before, always cranked once and started right away.

Clutch went, put in new clutch. When I got it back, it cranks forever to finally start - long enough that I seem to have burned out a starter.

Ok, new starter, new battery.

But it still cranks for like 30 seconds before starting. Once it starts, it sounds and runs fine.

Ideas?

Much thanks,
-A

If it wasn't for the clutch stuff and sudden change I'd say glow plugs. Can't think of anything that would be touched for a clutch would affect starting

Which engine do you have? The 2.0 HDi or 1.9 DW8?

2000 Citroen Dispatch 1.9TD XUD9 Camper Conversion
1999 Citroen Dispatch 1.9D DW8 Disassembled Camper Conversion
1996 Peugeot 806 1.9TD XUD9 Spare vehicle
1998 Citroen Synergie 1.9TD XUD9 Snapped timing belt

Re: 2003 Jumpy (Dispatch) - Cranks a long time to start

I think non functioning glow plugs is a reasonable guess if its an
indirect injection DW8/XUD motor
When we consider that someone's been in and out of the engine bay
changing the clutch, it seems quite feasible something may have been dislodged
during the process.

Waiting until you burn out a starter until investigating it seems odd to me as its an easy thing to test

Re: 2003 Jumpy (Dispatch) - Cranks a long time to start

Thanks for replies!

It is a 2.0 HDi.

Own multimeter, would be happy to check the glow plugs if it's something I can easily do myself. It is definitely easier to start in warmer weather which is suspicious.

I spent £10 and bought what seems to be the Citroen shop manual software - boots up in a VM running Windows XP (!) and has a funny web page to click on to access all systems. Need to see if I can find where the plugs are. The only diesel I have worked on is my '94 Volvo .... 19hp marine. That one is straightforward.

Any direction would be appreciated, thanks for the quick replies.

Re: 2003 Jumpy (Dispatch) - Cranks a long time to start

2.0 HDI ? well mine starts as soon as I turn the key whatever the weather.
Today I turned the key right to start without waiting for any dash lights to go out and it fired right up
so this and it being direct injection suggests it doesn't rely too much on glow plugs
unless it's really really cold.

I'd probably be checking the tank supply pump  and pipework around the filter for leaks
but reading the fault codes should be the first step

What mileage does your have?

BTW I bought that VMware software
some useful stuff but mostly crap and slooooow!
XP ? seriously?

Re: 2003 Jumpy (Dispatch) - Cranks a long time to start

Would love to get codes.

I have Car Scanner Pro (and I paid for it!) iOS app and a cheapie ELM327 bluetooth. Connects to ELM fine but never found the right profile (of a million Citroen options) to get the ECU to connect.

Trying to contact the app developer now, I tried this app a few years ago and never got it working but I really would like to.

If you have a preferred app (or desktop app) you recommend I would happily try it. I suspect my ELM327 is a knock-off but maybe...

Car started after only a few cranks this morning, it's warm out (20 or so). Not as fast as usual - I am expecting what you describe, starts on the first crank in any weather, not that it is ever so cold here in the sunny Med but down to 5C for sure with no issues.

you may need a better VCI to get codes from the Citroen
I has some probs getting codes with basic stuff, see on this thread
