New owner 52 plate expert 1.9 annoying engine fault possible ecu?

Hi guys.  About two weeks ago I purchased a 52 plate expert. On the drive home about 150 miles in the engine management light came on and the engine developed rather loud diesel knock. Apart from being noisy it has  been almost perfect until yesterday when the engine management light went out it wasn't until later that I noticed that my temperature gauge would read full scale three or four times then settle firmly on the left giving no reading whatsoever, furthermore at the same time I have lost my glow plug light.  I have  seen quite a few similar reports on the net of almost identical symptoms But no one has reported a fix.  Any  ideas welcome
I believe my van to be a 1.9 turbo dw8

Kindest regards Martin

Sounds like you have a 1.9 HDI  you need to get it plugged in  a read for fault codes
the ECU controls the injection timing , a heavy diesel sounds like its running a little advanced
if this is your engine it is a HDI

if not and it has a turbo  then it will be XUD engine
hope this makes sense to you

ps  I hate fly by wire car/vans that is why  I got the 1.9d a bit guttless but honest and basic
there should be only two wires to a diesel engine !

Hi And thank you for taking the time to respond. I too would have preferred the old xud I do hope I don't have the hdi (gulp) I am away from the van until tomorrow evening but this is a picture of my engine. 20150718_163758_zpsht472m1g.jpg

Is there a cheapish code  reader available for these vehicles on the diy market (I hate giving money to garages)

Its a DW8 1.9 non turbo  Same as mine but with some electronic gubbings as added to later engines
i found this thread that might be of use , this engine was used in lots of different models so lots of info out there

Re: New owner 52 plate expert 1.9 annoying engine fault possible ecu?

Thanks again monkeynut!!  I shall try another advance solenoid as I have a really good french car breaker just a few miles from me. In the meantime I still have no glowplug light or glowplugs for that matter, it seems quite a faff to get to the glow plugs themselves so does anyone know the location of the glowplug relay?

Kindest regards Martin

Would this be the glowplug relay?20150720_201228_zpskip5yxab.jpg

No it doesn't appear to be, so I have temporarily byassed it with a 12v ten second timer and a suitable relay.....  Also noticed in traffic yesterday that the fan doesn't cut in...  Hopefully soon someone local from the french car forumm will run his lexia diags on it to see if the ecu is reporting any faults. I feel myself the the ecu is borked sad

Re: New owner 52 plate expert 1.9 annoying engine fault possible ecu?

actually its most likely the temp sensor itself, and its also the cheapest bit to try first. (about £8)

the glow plugs are controlled by the temp circuit, they stay on from cold until engine reach 60 degrees (the temp circuit switches that relay you showed picture of), so if the temp sensor is out of whack, no glow light (this is controlled by relay) and hence no glow plugs from cold and if the temp sensor then reads low or zero after running for a while it could easily be turning glow plugs on then and causing your knocking...

the advance solenoid is typically most noticeable when running hard, sometimes it will seem to 'pick up' on throttle response better than others, run tank to 1/4 full put in diesel injector cleaner (£6) and give it a good thrashing often cure it as they can stick sometimes.

glow plugs are actually easy to change but the manuals only tell you so much, you really need to remove header tank bolts and place header tank to right hand side, then remove header tank bracket from body (2 x 10 mm head bolts), this bracket and pipes attached will then push right down back of engine this gives plenty of clearance then to get top intake off.

4 bolts hold the plastic air intake on (most fiddly bit going back on is those bolts) and then all glow plugs are easy to change, set are about £18 on the like of eBay (their 10 mm thread versions on those engines)

my scudo has exact same engine set up set up as yours in picture, fault codes give nothing useful on these engines typically usually no faults shown even when glow lights etc not working, its a pretty basic set up.

my 1.9 scudo will sit at 90 MPH all day on the motorway, they are not bad if their well sorted and kept maintained.

best wishes
Fred
