Re: Heater problem

Thanks all.  smile

Those fuse diagrams are great.  I have a few bits and pieces of manuals but non with proper diagrams like that.  Although they are for later models they look like mine.

No I didn't.  I got the manual first and missed that.

Cheers.

Re: Heater problem

Thread bump - and help needed...

Bought my 2006 Expert a couple weeks ago - no blowers. Found this great forum from searching for a solution. Checked the two fuses which were fine, so presumed it’s the isolator which arrived yesterday from Poland (ebay)

Following the instructions herein, got the blower motor out, but cannot separate the fan housing to get to the isolator.

Have I got a different unit than ‘standard’? Can I separate the isolator from it to swap with the new or am I going to need to whole unit?

TIA

Re: Heater problem

Ha, I used some plastic levers, one each side, to prize the fan off the unit. So wish me luck with the isolator next and hope that fixes it!

Re: Heater problem

After a lot of faffing getting the red and black spades connected to the motor and new isolator screwed in, and reconnecting the plugs, still no blowers.

Because the switch moves side to side so easily with no resistance I figured the issue might be wholly switch related. I tool the dash apart, removed the fascia panel for the switches expecting a connector to be accessible behind the blower slide switch but there’s nothing. Just one wire visible on the right side. I unscrewed it from the dash (with two torx bolts, one either side) but couldn’t pull that unit/panel through the aperture in dash. Just wouldn’t come out. Must have to take the whole lower dash panel out to get at that which I’m not arsed about. This part:

So I undid the tiny torx bolts to take the front of this fascia off and clean up the contacts and sliders behind. At this point I hoped that the brass/copper piece that sits on top of the slider witch lever and makes contact with the slider was not in proper contact. I removed that and raised the curved sections, cleaned everything again, reassembled it all but still no blowers!

What could be going on here? I really need to get the blowers fixed it’s bloody freezing in there and doing my head in now.

Hope for some fresh ideas and suggestions from you.

Cheers

Re: Heater problem

Huh, so that's what's behind that panel. Might explain why it's so crap for making contact.

Looks like you're trying to clean up the sliding resistor. Would it be better to try skipping that entirely and giving the motor 12v directly, to see if the motor actually works?

Re: Heater problem

@kenbw2
I’m sure that would be a good idea to test the motor, I hadn’t thought about that. I’m no good as electronics so I wouldnt know how to run a 12v supply to test the motor anyway. Taking it back to garage I bought from on Monday/Tuesday see if they can figure it out.
Also got a spare heater switch panel from a Scudo via ebay coming.
Just need to figure how to remove it from the dash hopefully without having to remove the entire lower panel from passenger door to steering column.

Re: Heater problem

My previous Dispatch just bypassed the slider panel entirely and had a spinny knob that controlled the blower. You could do something like that if it does turn out to be the panel?

Re: Heater problem

I remember when I was looking for a new resistor for mine, the Polish seller made a point of reminding purchasers to check the part numbers.  Apparently there are two different but identical looking ones used.

I ended up getting a new full blower unit for only a £10 more than the resistor would have been.

Like ken said, I would see if it is capable of running direct before doing any more dash dismantling.  I think many of us have been there.

The unit looks to have had water through it at some point.  This happens when the scuttles are blocked and could be the origin of the problem.

I ordered the part from the Polish seller on a speculative basis, thinking (hoping) the problem must’ve been the resistor, without having removed it to be certain. It took over a week to get to me so I could not afford to wait. However, since getting it out I have checked the numbers stamped and moulded onto the resistor I took off against the ones on the eBay listing and there’s no match. I don’t know whether I’m check8ng the right numbers but hopefully the new one is compatible. Also, what you mention about it looking like it’s had water into it has given me more food for thought so I’ll mention that and attempt to power up the motor directly as previously suggested.

I’ll update further when I have more f8nd8ngs.

Cheers
