Heater Control Panel Removal

Hello

I have a 2002 Expert and the heater on off control slider has stopped working. The previous owner has attached a manual on off switch as a fix but this is not suitable.

I have a replacement heater control unit and I wanted to ask the steps for removing the old one as well as wiring the power back to the fitted slider on the unit.

It looks like the heater control has a box on the back that needs to be connected up first before fitting the fascia.

Many thanks

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

Not took mine out yet but two screws are under the ashtray so that needs to come out first. Is that your left hand drive in the picture? If so pull the gear shift gator to the left at the bottom as two screws are under the material. Once ash tray is out you see screws for the heater controls. More screws could be under the gator at the top side.

Good luck

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

DSC_0603.jpgGreat. I have managed to get the fascia off. Fairly straight forward. Now I need to try to get the backend box of the heater control unit out. I know it will be attached at the back to the levers for vents etc. Any ideas? Do I have to go the whole hog and take the grey lower dash panel off. It kinda looks that way.

I would think its an all in one unit Gareth. Not had mine out yet as i need to fix mine also so let us know but i would be taking that lower panel out. The three small brass screws you are looking at on that plate only look like they are holding the steel cover on.

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

Yes. I think the lower panel needs to come out. Have found two screws for that each side of the heater, three screws in the glove compartment and it appears there is one screw tucked in the corner under the glove compartment. That is all I can see. Will have a tea break and then try and pop out the lower panel. Will keep you posted.

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

Also two screws under the steering wheel next to the fuses and one screw just below the gear lever. Plus one screw tucked behind the fuses. After that the panel comes off easily. This is all starting to go according to plan. Question to anyone that can help on the wiring. I have attached a picture of the cable plug that is in the back of the unit. Does this look correct or is there a couple missing?

The previous owner put a manual switch for the heater on a seperate cable feed that I have also pictued. Is this just a secondary feed and no longer of use or does it need to be wired back on to the plug that goes in to the back of the heater? Many thanks.

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

That is to clean mate. If anyone took wires out they would have just cut them and not took the pins out. Good money is on that being an extra for a higher end model, say Air Con or the likes. Go to the main page and the forth section down you should find the manual to download. This will give your wire diagrams.

If you get desperate for quicker answers you could try the fiat forum and tell them you have a scudo

http://www.fiatforum.com/

You want the bottom section if needed.

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

BTW if the last owner just put in a new live feed with an on/off switch it will be as he was to lazy to follow the wires back to the original problem. Has he even put a fuse in or it that feed from the original live at the fuse box. Obviously your heater works. If you are getting live from the wire after the proper heater fuse then its your slider buttons that have gone or the main wire in. That would be my theory.

Good luck.

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

I am with you Casper. There are no additional cables coming out of the feed that goes into the back of the heater. The previous owner must have just wired into the feed lower down. The fan has been working with this DIY switch the previous guy put in so I am hoping the problem is the slider switch and this will be resolved when fitting the new unit tomorrow. Fairly straight process so far.

I will take a look at the wiring diagrams. Cheers.

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

I have just put the resistor back in. Seems that this might be the root of the problem. It does not switch off completely, unless the fan is always moving when the slider is to the left. I made a video. Should the fan stop completely when the slider is to the left? Works beautifully otherwise!

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

Well I learnt alot. Not to bad pulling it all apart if you are in the mood.

Read a little about resistors here

http://www.resistorguide.com/applicatio … -resistor/

Found replacement resistors for £25 on eBay.

How annoying the slider button stalks snap off so easily. Any tricks to fix/ ugrade those?!

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

You might want to check your relay as well before pulling everything apart....

Now that is interesting. I wonder if the relay is my intermittent problem. It works for a while then stops but power is getting to the motor as i can hear it struggle. Push the speed slider to off for a while and back to on its fine again.

Oops big_smile  My heat control one is snapped. I just use the button, lift it out and in on the right of the lider to turn down and lift button and in the left of the slider to turn up. I must get one out the scrap yard.

Where are you BTW having a left hand drive?

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

So I will buy a new resistor and fit it. It sits in the same housing as the fan, I read this is to keep the resistor as cool as possible as it gets warm. Hopefully it will be straightforward. Thinking about a way to repair those broken controller stalks now. Maybe a strong solder as the metal seems fairly soft.

I am a Brit living in Sweden. My Swedish is not good enough when things get technical.

Thanks Gareth - that's the only thing I have actually tried so unless the replacement relay I got from ebay was also dud - I need to dig deeper!

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

I just changed the resistor that sits under the fan. Easy enough to do. Works a treat.

Here is the part I brought

Let me know if you want any help with it.

Might be to late but look at Gareths picture here

DSC_0603.jpg

See the pins sticking out that you attach the nobs to? Look at the top left one where it meets its mount under the silver plate. You should have a little brass sprung cover over that with three little parts sticking up to make a connection to the back of that silver plate. One of mine was missing and some of the buts sticking out had bent almost flat over the years so needed pulled back out to make the connection. Cant find a picture to show you what i am on about but if that is all your problem is then no need to strop half your dash out.

Driving home from the supermarket this eve ....

VOOM!

BIG blasts of hot air and a shower of leaves and dead flies ..... WTF??!!

After nearly two years of complete inactivity - my heater blower decided to have a laugh at my expense and came back to life.

Had to pull over to clean up the mess.

Would happen during a heat wave of course!

Re: Heater Control Panel Removal

Hi guys!
I read this forum from several months, but this is my first post, so Hello smile

Previous owner of my Expert removed resistor from fan housing. Now I don't know how to connect 3 cables (red, green and thin green) to the new resistor (3 pins, without a/c). Unfortunatelly plug is also cutted. Someone can help ?

Edit.
I have seen closer today and I guess that in my Expert was resistor with 4 pins. But I don't have air conditioning. Is it possible?  Do you know if this two types of resistor are compatible and exchangeable?
Anyway, please somebody send cable order for 3 or 4 pin plug.
