Replace Gear Knob & Gaitor

Hi, just looking for some advice for doing this. I have a '97/98 Dispatch 1.9.

The gear knob has disintegrated on the exterior. It's the dog's fault. He thought it was a ball.

Looking to replace, but not sure how it removes. It doesn't unscrew, and have seen somewhere that you rotate 90 degrees anti-clock and then pull like a train - just want to make sure this is right before I go ahead and cause some damage! If it's stiff and I have to brute force it - will it impact any linkages or connections from the gearstick itself?

Secondly, can anybody recommend a suitable replacement? Not seen any on eBay or anything that are made for the vehicle, just universal ones.

Will also try to replace the gaitor at the same time - again, if anybody can recommend one, and any advice on how to do? Imagine it's just ripping the old one off, putting the new one round the frame and clipping back in to place?

Thanks in advance all - much appreciated! First topic - apologies if any mistakes in placement.

Re: Replace Gear Knob & Gaitor

I got a gaiter off eBay and I think it either tucked in or I glued it, it's on a plastic frame that clips in, my gf actually fitted it for me! I think the gear knob just pulls off, mine used to spin round so I glued it with Araldite although it's made the reverse gear lifting collar a bit stiff!

Re: Replace Gear Knob & Gaitor

Thanks guys - took the plunge and gave it some welly, it came off pretty easy. Have ordered a replacement gaitor and I can see how that attaches.

My issue now is finding a replacement gear knob. All the ones I see online are for the plastic topped gear sticks. The dispatch has a square 'cerrated' metal gear stick (on the right in this image)

Wondering if something like this will work? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiat-Ducato- … SwlptZ5c-s

Re: Replace Gear Knob & Gaitor

For the price i would just order one or something nicer. Look into if Pug 406 is lift reverse also.

Re: Replace Gear Knob & Gaitor

Thanks - mine isn't lift (or push down) reverse, but yeah I was thinking the same, just order one. Fingers crossed, and if all else fails put a load of insulation tape round the top of it to make it a tight fit...

Re: Replace Gear Knob & Gaitor

For some reason i thought they were lift reverse. Been well over a year since i had my wee van. Even better then as you get nice wooden looking ones. Im sure the 306 had a wooden dash option. Saying that im sure the Expert did also in stuff like the E7's

Re: Replace Gear Knob & Gaitor

If the white plastic insert is still in the knob cut round the the gear knob with a hacksaw just above the recess that the  leather gaitor sits in and pull the top bit away from the white sleeve, and then glue that back on, then the gaitor won't just hang loose then you are left with the option to fit any of the gear knobs like this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skull-Gear-S … 0506.m3226

They come with 3 plastic sleeves one slips over your white plastic one perfectly and secures with 3 grub screws, I can take a few pics of mine tomorrow if I have not described clearly
