My van failed MOT due to the rear brakes not operating correctly. The shoes have plenty life left so I'm puzzled what to do next. Anyone had similar experiences or can suggest what to do next?

What exactly does the MOT fail say?

Failed as they only had 46% efficiency.

Sounds like part seized cable or the little arm that operates the shoes on the inside. Could also be poorly adjusted cable but your brake pull lever would be high. Strip and clean and if cable an overnight soak in oil may free things up. I am presuming you are talking about when using the handbrake.

The handbrake is perfect. It's the stopping efficiency when coming to a standstill that is the issue.

Then get the drums off and check the cylinders. Just did the drums, cylinders and shes on the wifes car and its chalk and cheese to what it was before.

If the handbrake is good and the footbrake is poor then it has to be a problem with the rear wheel cylinders . Siezed? Leaking? Is there a pressure valve on the rear axle? It could be siezed up also.

Both cylinders are f**ked. Sitting for 2 years hasn't done them any favours. Ordered replacements on the link Casper provided and hopefully we'll be MOT'd. Thanks for the replies guys!
