Bottom ball joint

Hi, my Dispatch has always had a bit of a clunk from the n/s despite passing two mots in my ownership. I gave my mate a lift (he runs his own garage) and he pronounced the bottom ball joint gone when he heard the clunk.
Are they easy to do on the van?
Is it easier to replace the bottom wishbone in one go?
Cheers

Re: Bottom ball joint

Looks like the same ones what went in the 306. If it is then easy as taking bolts out. Pry bar if you dont have the splitter tool a 2nd small jack is handy for lifting the arm again and DO NOT BUY EUROCARPARTS BALL JOINTS. They are all shit. Go to a motor factors. I did make this mistake.

Re: Bottom ball joint

I've also had clunking, but from the off side, mostly after driving down very bumpy roads. On one occasion after driving a mile down a dirt road to a campsite in the Czech republic, the clunk was that bad that I got towed the local garage.
The guys looked at it, found nothing, and the noise had gone (charged noting for the work!)
In my case I think that it's related to the suspension strut top bush sticking, and the spring readjusting itself. After the ns spring broke and both were replaced, the noise rarely happens (and I've been on some very bad roads since)

Re: Bottom ball joint

I'm going to jack it up tomorrow and get my son to wiggle the wheel with a bar underneath it to get some leverage and try and spot the movement.
I'm just hoping it's a straight forward type of job, I'm not in the mood for mither.

Re: Bottom ball joint

I think IIRC that the lower control arm (wishbone) you need to change the whole thing if the ball joint is gone.
not just unbolt the ball joint or grind of rivits ETC..........................

Have a look see if it's an antiroll bar rubber or link that's doing the clunk

Re: Bottom ball joint

When I had mine replaced by a garage recently they did the whole thing.

Interestingly I don't have an anti roll bar in mine, much to their confusion. I checked Citroen ServiceBox and it was made that way. Suits me, less to go wrong.

I seen the whole arm right enough but presumed that was the later models. That linked listing i posted is wrong then what turns an easy job into a pain

Re: Bottom ball joint

Woe is me...

Vertical movement in the bottom ball joint pin.
Tried tightening it up, still movement.
Took the bolt out but it doesn't look that bad...
Spoke to my mate who has a garage (he that observed the noise and pronounced doom), I'm going to try a new bolt from Citroen (this being high tensile and the correct diameter, and tighten it up really tight and see if that will sort it out.
I'm going to do this first to see if it will solve it, otherwise it looks like the whole bottom arm; £££

And to cap it all I was picking at some rust scabs on the sill and have opened up a 4 inch rusty elongated hole!

And whilst inspecting a rust scab on the other side I discovered body filler in the sill.... but it looks like a debt has been filled after further inspection.

Woe is me...
