Rear light unit

I’m sure I must be missing something blindingly obvious, but how on earth do I remove the rear light unit on my 2000 Dispatch in order to replace a bulb??  The manual mentions 2 securing nuts, top and bottom, and sure enough it’s easy to remove the 3-cornered plastic nut at the top, but the bottom one seems to be located within an inaccessible section of the body frame and I can’t even get near it.   Surely it’s not this difficult is it?

Re: Rear light unit

I'm sure that there are two long plastic shafts that you undo from inside, there may even be three. When you've undone them the unit should pull off from the outside. I'm fairly sure it's something like that. I took mine off last year to replace a for lamp bulb.

Re: Rear light unit

As Ricko says, a 3 - 4 " long black plastic extension with a nut embedded in one end and a bath tap style turny cross handle you can reach through the holes in the shell.

Careful not to rip the studs out of the bulb holder.   Easy to do, tricky to fix.  A good spray and soak if it resists too much.

Re: Rear light unit

Thanks, I think the access to the lower fixing must be hidden behind the interior plywood lining on mine.  I will have to remove the lining first.  Funny, I was sure I’d changed a bulb a few years back without that being necessary.

Re: Rear light unit

That’s it, I released the lower part of the plywood lining enough to get my fingers behind it to undo the lower fixing for the rear light unit.  I’m wondering if the lining wasn’t put back properly last time it was off, as I’m sure I’ve changed a bulb before without having to disturb the lining.  Will have to check before I put everything back.

I made cut outs in my plywood so I could just about get my fingers in to twiddle the long plastic nut shrouds.

Re: Rear light unit

One of my rear lights was leaking when I got mine.  On checking it out I found it held in with 6' of guy rope, a 4" x 3/4" spring and a 4" bit of dowel as a toggle.

Looks like they had pulled one of the studs out while changing a bulb while out on a trip.  Neat bodge though.
