Tyres

Hi, my van has "van" tyres fitted at the back 205/65R15; the fronts now need replacing, they are "car" type tyres, should I fit van type tyres on the front??
(I must admit I like the look of the more solid van type tyre)

Re: Tyres

Are the van ones not just rated higher for the weight. You may be using the van for carrying the max load but as a micro camper you would probably be fine with car.

Re: Tyres

I will agree with Casper but only up to a certain point "C" marked tyres are indeed rated for weight and are of a heavier/higher ply rating for commercial duties and thus in theory are more expensive and less sidewall flexable (comphy) than equivilent passenger tyres  .......... Here's where the debate (argument) starts ..........

We're Lucky that these vans are based on MPV's so therefore there are "Normal" rated tyres for them and comply with weight ratings Etc...........

Life become a little more complex when you can get a perfectly good tyre that fits a "Transit" size van that can carry the weight you have as a Gross Total in General as Casper says but you happen to be involved in a minor bump.....
We can get into the seedy relms of Insurance companies wriggling for non payment for any excuse and PC plod getting involved on what they'll claim is an "unsafe vehicle"....... not because it was but because the van can ... has the potencial too and was designed to carry gross weight more than tyres are capable of carrying

Yes!... there is a cetrtain amout of " You don't wanna do that" in what I'm saying but You pay your money .. you make your choice..............

My (garage) friends son has an Accident repair business and on 3 occasions this year the insurance assesor has arrived ......... Proceded to plug in a device to the OBD port and  refused repairs go ahead and payments on these vehicles as " undeclared modifications" ....
They were deemed to have been chipped
One of which was a Vauxhall Vivaro van and another that was a TD 5 LandRover Defender.... both were hardly of the expected boy racer fodder and both had been hit in the rear and owner declared "No Idea" as he'd only bought it second hand 3-4 months earlier and the Vivaro was a compny vehicle again bought second hand but as nearly new  a couple of years previous ..........(who proves or disproves what)

I have done it myself... Driven a vehicle half way across Europe only to find it was under or incorectly insured ....  "Or another memorey driving in a convoy of three from the Italian border and the middle truck was sort of hidden there because it had lost wheels, brake drum, Hub from trailer and the axle was chained up".........
IMHO it's all to easy to get caught out when trying to do the right thing.......... Or maybe I'm just Lucky that if I Know it's alittle iffy and "It'll be fine"... PC plod parachutes out a tree and feels my colar

Anyway as I say you make up your own mind...............I've posted this tyre thingy before as a guide not gospel...........

Usually within somewhere the tyre size Markings  91 is a Tyre weight rating = 615kg per tyre X 4 = 2460Kg Gross ............ A little tight but should be ok  on van with 2330Kg Gross
However AXLE Weight obviously is 1230Kg weight evenly distubuted but as per norm the rear will carry more and is (Don't know what it is) probibaly rated higher than the front axle
Hence why I Say 91's are a little tight (Just watch how loaded and heavy rear axle is plus sustained higher speedsand of course pressures--- high as well as low)(even a "P"  speed rated tyre is good for 90MPH) .............. 94xl's are probibly the better less worry option .................... Or if optional fit C rated 105's ....................................

But here's one thing we all tend to forget .................... most likely the (Alloy) rim will have a load rating also ......... Which will be a whole other debate..................

My van is currently getting slowly prep'd for a....... hopefuly trip to the Alps region (barring ongoing health issues) in the next couple months ................
I've replaced and saved the 205/60 15s that were on the rear and bought 4 winter (King Meiler) retreads with the snowflake M+S marking for this venture..... 195/65 15 95T XL  the front is awaiting tracking before tyres are fitted (currently have issuses with a rotten waste water tank)
Idid have the option of the 205/65 15 but as my van is a non turbo DW8 I match the 15s with the original spare which is a 195/70 14C   and not the HDI, 806, synergee ETC  larger version

Re: Tyres

£32.90 sounds good. Is that for part worn commercial types? Or new/car types?

Re: Tyres

That's a bargain. Where'd you get that done? I'm in Preston quite a lot so might not be too much of a trek
