cornering problems

Hi everybody im Pete and new here .Ive recently bought an 06 blue dispatch hdi and am having a few problems and by no stretch of the imagination am i a mechanic.my problem is that when go round corners or bends the steering on my dispatch feel extremely vague and feels like its going to just skip across the bend rather than go round it.does anyone have any suggestions and what maybe i should take a look at?any help would be greatly appreciated.

Previous owner bought cheap as chip tyres to get the sale?? broken spring?? Tyre pressure?? tracking?? does it have traction control? I had it in a fiat Stilo what gave the same rubbish effect on ice and the wet. Turning it off helped no end

I'd go with Casper on the tyre pressures as lot of places/people just put 30lb in ..... I run at 39....40lb,,,, I thought when i had van at first it was a bit sqidggy (vague) ..... Bumped them all up to 40 .... much better now(Normal feeling.... Whatever that is) and tracking can do something similar (or scrub off tyres as in my case with no real adverse handling effects) or more likely it's a combination of things............

Being van an having probably grafted usualy for a living like an abused Donkey...... Check every thing from steering rack integrity....security to bent or cracked subframe ...... 
(Garage I use tries/tried to maintain a 2004 expert ... builders van)

Purchased my Experts 1.9D 2007 a few months back now and that felt very strange when going round tight corners, i also noticed the outer edges of both front tyres seemed to be a little scrubbed up, i changed the front wheels for the back and had the balance and tracking done. its was out quite a bit. Its like driving a new van now.

I would agree with the other replies, get your tracking checked, it can make a vehicle feel most odd. Also the tyre pressures affect the handling.  Just consider the following  a Citroen 2Cv .... tyre pressures front 20 rear 25. Odd you think all the weight is over the front, 2 people can pick up the rear of a 2Cv, wheras the engine is over the front wheels, so why is the front pressur lower than the rear? The answer is that 2CV's under steer frantiaclly so the pressures are set up that the rear tyres are almost domed , so only the middle touches the road. This makes the handling  more neutral.
