MOT failed, scrap or repair ?

Just failed on the following...
Backbox, major leak.
CV boots both sides.
Nearside front coil spring broken.
Sub frame pin or bush excessively worn both sides.
Power steering hose leaking.

Its  1.9D Dispatch with approx 148000 on the clock, bodywork is good, drives well, only paid £730 for it.
Any ideas on repair costs for the above ?

Nothing terminal there. Definitely fairly hefty - probably a few hundred, but how much would you pay for a replacement van?

Re: MOT failed, scrap or repair ?

Just spent far more on mine.

I considered replacing but decided in the end to stick.  It's a gamble either way.

Mines a 98 TD, 11 80.00.   Been a camper from new.

Daren't add up the bill for the recent mot.  New glow plugs, timing belt, water pump, disks and pads,  rear brake cylinders, middle box, throtle cable, tyre + various other bits.  Probably more than you paid for your van!

Only time will tell if it was worth it.

Re: MOT failed, scrap or repair ?

I'd fix it every time unless it's terminally ill, all pretty basic nuts and bolts type of repairs, nothing needing specialist attention. Yes you may be able to replace it for not much more than the repair cost, then you start from scratch with god knows what needs fixing on the new one, including a snapped timing belt that the seller said he had replaced.

If it's in decent nick and it drives well, keep it.

My last 1.9 is still on the road (just checked) with 179k on the clock. I am in teh fix it group. That lot would cost little if you can DIY. If you cant DIY find a pavement mechanic as they are around £15 per hour where you buy the parts and they fit them. Know two blokes who do this what is handy for job i cant do or needing special tools.

Been quoted £500 all in, apparently the axle bush/pins are a "twat " to do, £120 per side.

So then is the rest worth it and look on ebay and gumtree to see what you get for your 500 quid if you scrap it.

Re: MOT failed, scrap or repair ?

£500 and all of those issues go away? Well worth it - I've chucked more than that at both of mine. I've heard about the difficulty of that rear axle bush too, but at least it'll be done.

Re: MOT failed, scrap or repair ?

Back box is easy enough to do yourself, make sure the van is supported on axle stands. £40 ish
Removing the suspension strut is a little bit more advanced, a hydraulic coil spring compressor is needed to make fitting a new spring easier, so that's probably a garage job. £40 ish plus two hours labour.
I seem to remember doing a CV boot on my Cit BX, it wasn't too difficult, not something I've done on mine.
No idea about the sub frame bush.
Can the power steering pipe be tightened up??

Re: MOT failed, scrap or repair ?

It`s all done now, really don`t have the time or inclination to do it myself. If it was 20 years ago I would have tackled it no problem.
