I just did 117.8 miles and it took £11 to put the needle back to where it was and fuel cost .999. I work that out 10.98lt used and 48.77 mpg. That is quite staggering from my non turbo 1.9. That was speed limits and needle never over 70 on the motorway and say 30 miles in town. Christ i never got that from my car

That's really pretty impressive.

I get 45 mpg in the 2.0HDi on mostly towny miles .. probably pushes 50 on motorway.

Neither of these engines are what we'd call modern .. but not a bad return on the fuel I reckon.

Excellent....

My MPG is on average overall about 7-10 m.p.g worse than that

Our van is always semi loaded, That is although not fully freighted, The conversion IMHO is not the lightest to start with and then holdalls, tank of fuel, beans, calor gas, water and us two of course just for starters............... not forgetting roof box

As we've just had a long W/end away and managed just shy of 600mls, I recon it'll take 65-70 ltrs to fill ......Quick squiggle on fag packet says 38-42ish MPG
This was on a bit of everything-motorway, A-B road, town work, up hill -down dale, E.TC. ..... Much the same overall as on our trip to Orkney last year.

Interested to see what's happening with everyone in the real world with DW8-HDI, conversion, lead foot, ..........

That's just how it is for me, right now

Another factor.......... SWMBO's 306........... same engine (DW8)..... does 40-45m.p.g. day in day out ...that's just driving it!.......First trip to Spain (roof box) 49. something

Every other trip 50-52mpg (No roof box).............  best achieved was Dunkirk to  Clermont-Ferrand via Reims-------57mpg.............

A habit cast over from work that I keep trip/fuel records

So all being equal and if savings etc, go to plan we're going to Spain in May............ So based on the 306.... I'm looking to budget @ 37/38mpg and with luck achieve the low to mid 40's overall

Something I've noticed over the years both in commercial vehicles and private..... that before and again when I get off the boat into the UK my MPG  drops by 1 or 2 for that leg ...... I have no idea why..

Do we drive a little harder on this side or is it more stop start congestion ?

Its no always this good Vaz. My lowest was 29.23 and my average on 15 fuel stops is 37.65. I do expect that to rise as i have been using the van for work so lots of stop starts but this is ending as the van starts to take shape.

You talking about more MPG on the last leg. I notice i drive a lot faster on the last 10 miles or so as i get closer to home. Also if the motorway is empty then i will stick to 70 or under but if busy i drive faster to either pass the congestion or join the pace rather than sit back and watch them drive on. I think its our competitive nature what some have worse than others.

You know 37.65 is not to be sniffed at as an average overall MPG............ Mine is bound to suffer with the weight of the conversion and the roof box even though I've now lowered it a good couple inches............. plus I don't think my van has ever been hammered, ... I mean up "N" down M/way in the  white van man style and from the point it was converted from new and in its first 8 years managed 38,000mls in the last two years the guy I bought it from did 44,000mls and Ive only managed another 5,000mls.... Engine still feels tight to me compared to others Ive driven........... It doesn't rev like our 306 but it has a Bosch pump on it, Not the Lucas/Cav..... Delphi? that's on the van........ Mind you even if they are more spriteley, It's not as though they'll set a crick in your neck............. Compared to the revs on the car at a given speed the van is reving harder

^Sorry I actually meant on the leg to and from the boat my MPG is always worse by 1-2mpg^

My 2.0 HDi is regularly returning about +45mpg on average over about 1000 miles on wide mix of urban and motorway with average driving behaviour (ie smooth changes but occasional faster driving).  This is with a substantial roof rack and completely empty van.  So I think it's very impressive considering it's a 2004 vehicle.  It's also notably higher than the expected mpg in the handbook- when does that ever happen?!

45mpg is a particularly handy mpg to have actually.

Since there are 4.5 litres in a gallon, you can work out your cost per mile by just moving the decimal point on the cost per litre.

So if you paid 97.9p per litre for your fuel - your cost per mile is 9.79p

Simples :-)
