Economy - How many miles per tank do you get?

Thought this would be a bit of fun, brimmed my 2002 2.0HDi from fuel light on and managed to get a couple of miles under 700 out of it until the light came back on (yeah it did cost £95 to fill up,was £1.30 a litre at the time, but kinda chuffed with the result) 13p a mile can't be bad?

Anyone better this is or do these vans run on magic?

PS no effort to save the right foot included in this test

Think that works out at 43MPG what is not bad. I only get around 35 in my 1.9D but of late as it never gets over 50mph much its been great on fuel. Must brim it to work out true MPG soon.

Re: Economy - How many miles per tank do you get?

Highest I ever got in I got my DW8 was 45MPG - that's all motorway at 50mph. My run around Europe last year with no economy effort returned me about 37MPG.

My new 1.9TD got me 48MPG on a similar run down from Scotland the other week, although that's on veg oil for what difference that might make.

Be interesting to see how it does, 43mpg, I can live with that!

That was very very light footed at 50mph on the motorway

I get about 700 too, just had a trip to Snowdonia then down to Brecon and finishing Swansea before back to Pasty land,  £100 full tank and was close to 700 before light came on,  mega happy with that

It seems these vans are great for economy, 700 on £100 is none too shabby in my book, glad to see your reply,

Yea it's why my answer to "don't you want a bigger van?" I'm like "no I quite like my mpg"

Even cheaper when veg is 70p/litre

Re: Economy - How many miles per tank do you get?

I like to see around 700 too.  Can be more with careful cruising and no mountain climbing though.

Ken... I noticed your mention of 50mph on motorways for economy.  You would think so, but I have read in a few places that cruising at 55- 60 mph is optimum for "most" engines.  So perhaps you can go a little faster and save a few more pennies?

Re: Economy - How many miles per tank do you get?

Driving pretty carefully and avoiding Paris I got 39mpg. I was pretty chuffed with that considering I live in the the thing with all my things and tools. I don't go faster than 90kmh and always change gear pretty early.

You make a valid point about cruising speed..... I just had 4..5 nights away and averaged just a smidgen over 37mpg............ yet last time we went to Spain From Dunkirk back to Dunkirk we did 3,769 mls and averaged 40.36MPG...............(just double checked)

37MPG I would guess is an achevable normish for a DW8 (out of town) however I was feeling the engine was labouring on more than one occaion on some of the hilly parts we were Dawdling about on
(I'm sure some of the natives were pleased)..........

Where as the Spanish trip was more consistant 60mphish and as pointed out here somewhere weight does play a factor.........

A bigger role than we may initially appreciate

(I was surprised how much weight my "empty campervan" was lugging about)

(I took the opertunity to brim off in Fort William .......3/4 tank showing but true to form took 34 somthing ltrs on 286.    somthing Mls)

On return trip home I was running a little faster and noticed I'd covered 160 mls almost before gauge started to move.......... I should if I could be Bothered is to go brim it off again

DW8 labouring - were you trying to go more than 55mph?   big_smile

Re: Economy - How many miles per tank do you get?

I've just done a trip give from Spain and calculated mpg by brimming as accurately as I can. I tried on the way down but something on the dash slightly pressed the trip reset button and sent it to random numbers. I did work it out roughly and it was 35 or 37mpg ish. Most of it was motorways doing 80/85mph.

This was on the way home

IMG_20190722_060616_1.jpeg

First one (top right) was Spain (just south of Barcelona) over the Pyrenees and half way up France to just south of orléans, 90% avoiding tolls so a lot of it doing 60ish and going through the odd towns.

2nd, we were running a bit behind so toll roads came into play, so most of it sat at 80/85.

3rd was Dover to bacup, and back on veg (50/50) I'd you want to factor that in.

It could be argued I'm cheating because by car is a synergie therefore slightly better aerodynamics than a van, but it was loaded up with people stuff, including a Towbar mounted luggage rack so that balances it out I suppose

IMG_20190712_212859.jpeg

It's an 1.9td xud. Normally I generally get around 34mpg average day to day on 100% veg

If in doubt, give it a clout!

Re: Economy - How many miles per tank do you get?

My 700 was first week July when I went up to Bala lake couple days then headed to Brecon then Swansea then back home, nice mix of ups and downs and a steady motorway drive,  first Sunday in August just doing a day trip to Haines motor museum for their breakfast club, round 300 mile trip.

Re: Economy - How many miles per tank do you get?

Thought I'd add this here, although it's from another post on a different subject, It is quite relevant here too.

It looks like mine is getting round 37.8mpg, in fairness that does include a 650 mile round trip on this tank of fuel but I've not gone out of my way to be economical in my driving habits. As with all my vehicles, both 2 wheeled and four wheeled, when I got my scudo I replaced fuel, oil and air filters and I use a friction reducer such as slick 50 with my semi synthetic 10/40 engine oil.

Think I was getting low 40s till it blew up last week, funnily enough had just brimmed so I could do the same.

Oh, payload was light, as furniture, although can be heavy, takes up more space than load so I guess the 700 is due to this rather than carrying lead
