Power steering pump

Dispatch 1.6 90bhp 2008.

The belt (steering pump Aux belt) on mine decided that it didn't need to be on the wheels last week. Dislodging some cables and damaging the pump its self. I got towed to a garage (in france) where the most unhelpful garage owner was only interested in getting me off his forecourt. They had a belt, but no pump. So after an 8hr wait they pushed the van in to the workshop only to have their floor covered in oil, (I had a silent titter over that). They changed the belt topped off the oil and sent me on my way. I did ask if it would get me home, a shrug was the reply.

So I bogged off feeling very welcome. I had just shy of 100km to go so took it easy. Well I only just made it as I pulled on to the drive... cue graunching noises and heavy steering.

Well I am now the proud owner of a new pump and will be fitting it this weekend 17/18 Aug 2019 (weather permitting). Is there any tips/tricks I should know about? Where is the tensioning arm/wheel. Is it easier to do with the wheel off?

Many thanks

Buck

Re: Power steering pump

I did mine on my 1.9, I assume it's pretty similar. A few things I learned:

- Make sure the pulley lines up exactly with the others. Mine wasn't, and it chewed up after about 50 miles. You should know after 5 miles if it's determined to realign itself half off the pulley
- Drain the existing power steering fluid by lifting the front wheels off the ground, and turning the steering (with the engine off) lock-to-lock loads of times
- Once you've fitted it, bleed the air out by doing the lock-to-lock again. You'll probably be there for a while

I don't remember having to take my wheel off. Tensioner is going to be different on different vans - some are manual, others are auto adjusting. Although maybe on the 1.6 they're all auto-adjusting, I don't know. Can look that up if you need.

Re: Power steering pump

Well the weather did not cooperate. It is now done, it was not particularly hard. The wheel arch liner needs to come out, also the wheel off, if you do this make sure the tensioner is secure, unlike me... I did not do more than one top up after I had finished to bleed the system. The bolts toward the wheel arch are a pain to find and undo and tighten.

Re: Power steering pump

If memory serves me right, my aux belt used to like moving off the pulley's just not all the way! I replaced it at same time as doing the timing belt & water pump, like you say drivers wheel off and the inner wheel arch, hence why I changed the aux belt at same time as timing.

On a side note, did find out that the timing was out a tad more than the allowed tolerances! Ended up spending lots of money on other parts after that though. Found the air intake manifold was broken, 2 of the 4 injectors knackered and the other 2 not far behind, turbo knackered which meant new oil feed pipe to turbo, and then after all that found the egr gasket to be well virtually not there.

My van is the 1.6 90hp too.
