Brenda's 'new' engine arrived today, supposedly from a Scudo JTD with only 76k on it. The inlet manifold, however, is clagged with thick, sludgy oil. Is it likely that the donor vehicle suffered turbo failure, and should I be worried about the internals? The engine is under a 3-month warranty.

Dirty old out will be running out due to being stored on its side.

Inlet gets full of shit from the EGR too, you could send back and get the one from Allparts SW think its up for 250 quid, unless thats the one you have ofc.

Well, this engine was £360; what appeals to me is the low mileage, as my van has done 185k...so if the mileage is correct, it'll be like driving a new van. My plan is to get together with a mechanic friend and have a close look at it first, before I go to the trouble of sending it back to Oldham. With that much gunge on the inside of the manifold (and it is all the way through it, 1-2mm thick in places), do you think there's likely to be damage inside the combustion chambers, or would it burn off once running?

I'd take the manifold off and see if you can see the valves. That's where the build up would likely cause an issue. It would (should) burn off of there is any in the cylinders
If in doubt, give it a clout!

Yup the manifold will be coming off for a clean i think. Don't want any more cack getting in there...
