Hi all, I have an old expert, R reg. I have lost 1st 3rd and 5th after a clutch change. Time for a new box, or is it fixable?

Many thanks. Jon

There is a good chance I'm talking through my Ar** here............
What was the box like before clutch change.. Was it ok or otherwise?

Have you checked the gear change cables are correctly attached or still attached..............

My train of thought is thus..............
what was disturbed?
was it working before and not now? ................ Why?.............

It seems strange only the gears that involve the stick in the forward position have become AWOL............
But as I say maybe talking through my etc..............

Re: Gear box fail?

Hi, the box was fine before the clutch change. From what I remember the mechanic had a mare getting the box back on, i'll have a check over the cables.
Thanks.

Re: Gear box fail?

As vaz suggests, it does seem more likely a problem with the lever or cables than the box.  I don't suppose the cables needed disturbing at the lever end so more likely the connection at the box or the cable routing.

Coincidentaly I had identical symptoms only a few days ago.  Mine was self inflicted though by driving without the gear lever gaitor fitted and the charge cable for my satnav falling into the linkage.

Re: Gear box fail?

A very powerful diagnostic tool is the question > " What happened last?"  In your case as the answer is  'I had a new clutch fitted ' There is a 90% chance that somehow the cable that does the forwards and backwards  (1-2 3-4 etc) hasn't gone back on quite right for some reason.

Re: Gear box fail?

In one of the manuals for Dispatch/Expert etc that I read it mentions that whenever the cables are disconnected for a clutch change etc they will need resetting using a 'special jig' to lock the gearlever in place!  Surely if they are refitted the same as they were removed they shouldn't alter much, I can't imaging many workshops knowing about this or even having the jig?  New cables maybe, but not with the existing ones?

Pete.
