03 Dispatch 1.9D Starting Issues

Just started a few days ago. Got up in morning and van was a bad starter. Four attempts when it usually fires up straight away. I thought it was the way i started the van, possibly pressing clutch was the problem so made a note of not doing that and its been fine till today. It would nit start for love nor money, Starter spinning fine and sounds strong. Lots of black smoke when trying also but ended up having to bump it on a hill. On the way home i thought possibly battery even though its a Yuasa and looks new. I do a lot of stop start trips so decided to put it on charge. Half hour after i stopped the van i took the battery into the house and it was reading 12.73v and in the past hour its reading 12.70 what is nothing. Its a 75ah with 650cca if that helps. Anyway, its still not on charge as ill see how much it drops over night but of battery is good any thoughts on what it could be?

Sounds like the glow plug need to be changed or the relay

Re: 03 Dispatch 1.9D Starting Issues

Fuel you can check by cracking the injectors but you say you get black smoke so chances are that's fine.

It's been getting cold recently, so my bet is glow plugs. The light on the dash means very little, so check the glow plugs with a multimeter.

You should be able to reach one of them. Stick the positive of the multimeter onto where the rail/wire attaches to the glow plug, and the negative on something grounded.

Turn the key to ignition, you should see 11-12V for a few seconds before it cuts out. If you get that, the glow plug relay is working. If not, you need a new gow plug relay.

If it's getting voltage, chances are the plugs need replacing. It's a straightforward if fiddly job, needs the air intake off but I did it in an hour or so.

Re: 03 Dispatch 1.9D Starting Issues

Cheers guys. Battery has only dropped 0.1 of a volt in almost three hours but remember it was driving just before so looks like defo not the battery. Aye, when this has been happening it has been cold so maybe i will just order plugs and relay as i have no history of the van so could be standard for all i know. Where is the relay on the 1.9D? My fuse box looks sod all like the handbook picture so could be anywhere.

Yea get a relay from a scrappy. But make sure yours is working first, you might just have old plugs.

The relay is a black and green box to the left of the engine as you look at it

Just been down and had a look for it and see it. Looks clean but that means nothing. Anyway, when i start my Convoy i dont use the light as it goes out way to early. The relay is inside the cab so i wait for the click. Can never hear it in the Dispatch and now i know why. I also have just been a twat. Put key in and turned ignition, stuck head under the bonnet to hear the click. Guess where the battery is big_smile

Re: 03 Dispatch 1.9D Starting Issues

Especially with the change in the weather the heater plugs are most definitely the main suspect here. The black smoke tells you that there is plenty of fuel , it just won't start burning!
A simple way to check them is to disconnect the wire that links the 4 heaters from each individual  heater plug . Then hold a wire on the battery + , then brush the wire against the terminals of the heater plugs, if they work there will be sparking ( each plug pulls about 6A), if there is no sparking then it's a duff plug.  Be careful with the wire , its live and unfused so if it touches anything , it will short or spark like mad. Don't turn on the ignition.......

Re: 03 Dispatch 1.9D Starting Issues

I'm going with the glow plug theory ............. I'm sure I was down a plug early in the year  I bought a set of cheapo's off eB** (Beru & NGK are not so) .......... and with the touch of frost recently I'm finding Starting harder also (Think I'm posibly down another) .............. So time to check and get this Set fitted I'd Say...............

Ive done two sets on the 306 over the years and miles and that was a PITA so with the vans engine so far under the scuttle ............ I guess let the fun begin ......... Or I pay someone to do it!!

I'm not recommending or condoning ............. but having a can of kygas (easystart) handy can get you out a hole .............

Bolts that you cant see on top of manifold are flubbered. Looks like i need to order another and get violent with this one. Is all the 1.9 manifolds the same over the years?
