Cylinder head

Hello everyone, I recently found a bit of oil in my expansion tank which I am slowly fishing out until I do a full flush and refill. For the moment I have bypassed the oil cooler as that could help me rule out the head gasket. My question is, can the head cylinder be taken off a '98 dispatch without removing the engine?? It seems so far back in there but I don't wanna start removing parts just yet to see if it's possible.

Re: Cylinder head

My 98 Expert had to have the engine dropped to do the head.

Re: Cylinder head

could that be done just with a jack or did you need an engine crane?

Sorry it's not a procedure I've needed doing on this Vehicle ...........

Something in the back of my mind says that somebody here on Forum (mentioned) was able to pull engine forward to do job .........
Be worth a chat if they come along or see if you can hit them up for some info................

It's such a PITA to remove engine for a head job..........

But if that's only way to go I'd be inclined to do a bunch of preventative stuff when access is so much free-er

Re: Cylinder head

I tried it myself once. I undid the mounts on the left and right of the engine and rocked it forward.

I could juuuust about get my hand behind there to try to unbolt the manifold but I couldn't get a grasp on any of it and had to give up.

Everyone on the frenchcarforum said it's an engine out job: https://frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/view … hp?t=61031

Re: Cylinder head

You don't have to drop the subframe. The engine is accessible by removing the front of the van i.e. grille, bumper, front panel, radiator, ancillaries. Think you have to disconnect driveshafts too. Then undo 3 engine mounts and exhaust/heater (with engine supported on trolley jack) and you should be able to tilt engine forward enough to do the head. Still a mission and a half, but no lifting of van involved. My whole engine was replaced without undoing the front subframe and it took just over a day. Good luck....
