Fiat Scudo, 2006, Rear wheels locked - Handbrake Cable?

Hi everyone

My Scudo only gets used 2 to 3 days a week and can often sit idle from Friday afternoon until the following Thursday morning. This has been the case for about 6 months. Prior to that it was used daily without this current issue.

I tried to use it yesterday, however when I go to pull away it feels like I've left the handbrake on and the back wheels are pre-locked and just get dragged along by the front wheel drive.

I've tried reversing it and then going forward - this has freed the driver's side rear wheel but not the offside. I asked the local garage for advice, they said it could be the handbrake cable locking through lack of use. They suggested taking the wheel off, looking for the cable mechanism to see if it is jammed. Also possibly just giving the drum brake (?) a clout with a hammer to free things up and then leave the handbrake off until I get it fixed. They implied that the van should be fine to drive if that works......I need your help here guys!

I'm not daft, I'm practically minded and methodical but I'm not a mechanic - any advice would be very welcome.

I'm a part time gardener so I have elderly clients' gardens to attend to and I am also a NHS Responder simply due to the fact that I have a van and I want to help with medical deliveries or shopping whatever

Thank you in advance

Dave

Take wheel off and batter round drum till it frees. Once done drive for a while lightly pulling the handbrake to rub off any rusty shite. Park in gear next time with hand brake off.

Hi Casper

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a go shortly.

Is there anything in particular that I'm looking out for - is it like a clamp/shoe/block that may be rusted to or 'stuck' to the disc/drum?

Thanks again

When I had this I took the wheel off and just whacked the drum itself with a hammer and it came loose

No finesse or precision. Just whack the big metal drum

I'll go with both Casper and kenbw2..............
It's probably down to lack of use over a period of time and I've tended to notice the tighter the handbrake applied the quicker it sticks............

Everyday use tends to keep them free.........
If sitting for long periods leave in gear with hand brake off if you can.........

On two memorable occasions...........

First : I'd parked my Lada 4x4 on my Sisters Back green and I was away for about a month.........

Yes...... I'd left hand brake on and it started and moved no problem until I heard dragging wheel on concrete drive .... reversed "Bang " it freed to then find I'd left a Trench behind...................

Second : Partners 306 sits at her Dads place in Galicia,Spain for a fortnight doesn't move......... when leaving .... Same thing "Bang"  rear brake frees .............. we then drive clean across Spain to the Costa Brava for a week .........
Again leaving but this time we're turning Left O/S wheel locks up...... Stop and reverse wheel Frees..........

I Drive 1300 miles home (with No worries) and then about a week later ......... I get rear brakes looked at because handbrake travels a bit much and "SHE" wants it seen to as she wants to visit her Daughter...........
O/S Drum comes off and the lining glue has  failed and about 75% of lining is floating about drum and only a tiny percentage is left on shoe........... ops

Apparently you are also meant to chamfer the trailing edge of the shoes when fitting new ones. I never did when we did the wifes car and that could sit for a week also with no use but still never had an issue. Unless the chamfer is to prevent future issues. Anyway. Never had my convoy stick and that can sit for weeks with no use. My dispatch has stuck over a long W/D when its been cold.

Thank you to everyone!

I took the rear wheels off, gave the drums some gentle but definite persuasion with the hammer. Then wire brushed the rusty bits off and hey presto - all is well.

Thanks again
