Hi just a quick question.
I have recently bought another dispatch it's the 1.9d flat diesel flavour,
My previous one was a hdi which had the coolant heater (the 4 glow plug things)
I have had a few berlingos with the 1.9d but I cannot remember how the heater behaved.
On this one start up from cold and with in 1/4 of mile she will start blowing warm air from the heaters just this seems a bit quick, is this right do they have a coolant heater like a hdi.
The engine if anything runs on the cool side temps never get above 65c (stat opens on the early side)no excess pressure, just seems a bit quick to start blowing warm air from the heater

I have always felt that my heater on a 1998 van warms up quicker than many others. Don't think it has a coolant heater though.

Pretty sure the heater on mine is assisted by an electric 'radiator' in the shape of a huge heatsink hedgehog - i.e. current gets passed through a hefty resistor and then that gets it heat dumped in to the sink which is then blown about by the fan.

Thats the way it feels, like it has a PTC heater (electric) installed in the heater box I have a 10 plate 1.6 tdci/hdi focus and that has a PTC heater and behaves like the van within a 1/4 mile theres warm air.
i might have a look see, its more out of interest than anything else, suposse its to do with diesels been cold blooded.

Never heard of that.
I would think it must draw quite a current to be effective?

I've heard of such a thing and like OAT Never knew that's (1.) what they were called (PTC heater) and (2.) never knew they were fitted to vehicles (Like how a coolbox works but hot all time)
I was led to believe they were only good for short periods ...........
We (as occupant) had No control .......
But biggest threat of all was without cleaning they could potentially become a serious health hazard..........
Although:~ In saying all this I have (unwittingly) Noticed in the 306 (20 yrs old) and not so much in van that it does tend IMHO to put out a bit of heat quicker than other previous Diesels........... More like a petrol variant .................

The PTC is fairly common place on diesels and do only run for short periods they are used to provide some warmth until the engine coolant has warmed up.
I cannot imagine they are anymore of a health hazard than the heater matrix itself.
Coolboxs are a different beast altogether they use Peltier module which is a cool bit of kit, apply power one side absorbs heat (gets cold) and the other side dissipates heat, reverse the current and the cold side gets hot and the hot side gets cold, hence these coolbox have a hot/cold switch.
Then the really cool bit is if you apply heat to Peltier module they generate electricity
