Bailcast CV Sticky Boots Any Good?

Was under my 2004 Scudo 2.0 JTD earlier struggling with the oil filter as there's little room to get hands or tools on it to undo. Doing oil and filter change. Anyway, had a look around while I was under and noticed the n/s outer (hub end) cv boot had split and spewed it's grease everywhere.

I realise I need to fix it quickly or more bills will soon follow. Was toying with DIY with a Bailcast split boot or let the garage fit a normal one. Has anyone had success with the Bailcasts and should I give it a go? If not, how much would a garage normally charge/how many hours?

The boot is £21 plus it looks like I need their pliers for another £20 to close up the metal bands. With the post will be approx £50. Is it worth the hassle?

Thanks to anyone for their experiences/advice.

Hi Woodbine,

I've not any experience of the split boot. To be fair I'd just sort out fitting a standard type boot.

Re: Bailcast CV Sticky Boots Any Good?

IMHO .....If you are talking £50 as a temporary measure ....

How long is it to delay the inevitable repair you propose...........
Is this action to get you out of a dire hole........

I'm playing something of Devil's advocate in asking these questions...

As I feel if it was me I'd look to put the £50 towards the final repair.............
As if you hadn't been under van in first place you would still be none the wiser..........

Yes you are correct to deal with it ASAP but will another week under current lockdown Lesser use make such a change............
If it's aready past it's sell by date your to late as you have No idea how long it's been like that ........
But deal with it now you do know and (keep use to a minimum) you'll know better than us what you (have to) do .........
It is something of a calculated Risk/Gamble...........

So long as it's Not Bone dry or full of Grit (Possably to late for it anyway if is) and you've got mega miles to do ........

BTW Split boots/Gaiters are OK  (can be a PITA) but although quick repair I've found quick life .......
I prefer Standard "Normal Gaiters/Boots"

The split boots are  rubbish.  Just get a proper job done.  All the power from the engine goes through the CV joints and without lubricant they wear very rapidly. New joints/ shafts are significantly more expensive than getting the boots done.

Re: Bailcast CV Sticky Boots Any Good?

Thanks for your replies. I think the CV joint is ok as there are no strange noises or clunks. It's a tidy van and lowish miles so worth looking after. Have booked it in tomorrow for local garage to put a new gaiter on. The split boots did seem a bit of a faff. If CV goes in future, will bite the bullet and get a new shaft.
