Heater Blower works when engine off

Hi all, long time owner, first time poster

my Mk1 Citroen Dispatch had a dead battery (my own fault for leaving the lights on...), did a swap today for a freshly charged one.

For some reason the heater blower now works when the van is running or turned off with the keys out. I've noticed the immobiliser light doesn't flash nor does the van does it pathetic beep if I open the door with the lights on. Could it be related?

Re: Heater Blower works when engine off

Just a slight update but nowhere closer to fixing it

open van, pull out relay for the blower - blowers stop working (hooray), test relay with multimeter and a battery and it works fine. So it's getting constant power to it even with the engine off, key out and van locked?

Re: Heater Blower works when engine off

I've not yet taken it for a run, but engine running everything seems fine.

I have noticed a new feature - with engine off and key out if i touch the indicator there's a really rapid clicking sound and the battery light flickers really fast.

Fun times ahead! big_smile

Re: Heater Blower works when engine off

Yea it's not caused me any problems, except for my split charging! I use the blower motor as the signal to connect my two batteries up sad

Re: Heater Blower works when engine off

Well update for this morning

Try the van, dead. Battery fully drained and it's unlikely it'll charge up again. That's 2 it's gone through since wednesday.

I'm absolutely gutted.

Re: Heater Blower works when engine off

You have my sympathy Captain, nowt worse than weird electrics.  Could be a tiny nick anywhere in the loom.   Strange how this one seems to affect various different circuits though, blower, immobiliser and indicators at least.  Must mean a live feed is getting to numerous different circuits when it shouldn't.

Is all clean and corrosion free at the fuseboxes?

Did all these faults appear at same time after a simple battery change?

I would be thinking of biting the bullet and letting an auto electrician have a look.  In the meantime fit a battery isolation switch to use when parking up?

Re: Heater Blower works when engine off

Aye, I think the way forward is an auto electrician

I've done the usual suspect checks - 12v across battery terminals when engine off, 14v when engine on. There's a draw of 0.15A with the engine off though. Fuses are all good and everything looks clean (apart from the engine which is covered in anti-corrosion used engine oil from years ago - a clever feature!)

To my (simple) mind there must be a relay from the ignition that turns the live feed off when the ignition is off that is somehow jammed closed?

It makes me yearn for simple problems like changing the rear bushes

Re: Heater Blower works when engine off

Just had a text from the guy looking at my van and I thought it might be of interest for others

It's a bad diode on the alternator. Doh!

Re: Heater Blower works when engine off

Hmm, maybe mine needs some attention. I do notice it needs high revs to get it to kick in =/

Re: Heater Blower works when engine off

to add to this, mine has a dealer fitted tow bar with twin sockets. i bought the van cheap as it had "electrical faults" (if only it was just electrical!). i ended up fixing the constant flat battery the every night i bought it as it was the auto voltage charge relay on the grey/white towing socket going crazy after the van had been parked up for a while. the relay even though it had no load somehow melted its self away and consumed the amps and drained the battery.

worthy of checking wink
