Rear Axle/Beam bushes

Had some creaking and clonking going on for a while that got to the point when I could feel it leaning a bit more than usual on corners. Bit of research and the other half lying underneath while I rocked the van and we discovered serious play and noise coming from drivers side rear axle bush.
Put the job into whocanfixmycar.com and out of a dozen local garages only one quoted me and that was £359 for both sides.
I'm not sure how long I'll be keeping the Expert so thought I'd have a go myself. Have ordered a model specific press for £30 and a pair of axle bushes cost £14.
Managed to get the bolt out yesterday without damaging it, which I was really worried about. The bush pretty much fell out. No wonder it was noisy! The bush outer steel sleeve is firmly stuck in the axle but hopefully the press I've ordered will push it out.
So far(touch wood) it hasn't been as awful as I feared/ was told. I'll let you know how I get on with the press. Should be here mid week hopefully.mini_IMG_20200705_124051475.jpegmini_IMG_20200705_124035759.jpeg

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

ive had this before. not on this van though.

if the outer steel part of the bush is stuck, thread a hacksaw blade through the hole and saw a groove into it. amazing how well that works.

use copper slip when you press the new one in.
when it comes to that just use a long bolt and a socket or washer. as you tighten it up, it draws the new bush in wink

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

Well that didn't go very well. I suggest not buying a £30 model specific press off ebay. The bushing is still firmly in place but the press tool is knackered! As well as damage seen in photos the bolt has cross threaded.

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

John, can you explain to me a bit more re cutting groove into the stuck steel part of bush. I've had to return the press as it's fubar!

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

yeah, so with a hacksaw blade, thread it through the middle of the stuck steel bit. then with the blade through the stuck middle bit put it into a hacksaw handle and start sawing away till its been cut through. its cheating but its also working big_smile

you could also heat it up with a blow torch and keep hammering it with a chisel. one side then the other and sort of walk it out.

if the chisel is sharp enough you could cut through it by just hammering it. lengthy process and could damage the thing it sits in though.
had this same thing with the bottom engine mount.. thankfully enough room to get a hacksaw blade in and fit it in the hacksaw handle upside down.

hope this helps!

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

Thanks for that John. I'm having a mare with it. I've cut a groove in it with a hacksaw and tried again with the press but all i'm doing is crushing washers and putting my back out lol. I think I'm down to trying with a Chisel. With see if I can see something suitable on ebay for sale. It's totally welded in there sad

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

torch it..  get it nice and hot and it will come out easy. usually when its been sliced it comes out with a few taps from a hammer and bit of bar.
sometimes its hard to tell if you have made a cut all the way through. worth checking. the idea is the 1/2mm cut from the saw blade will let the metal bit crush inwards just enough to get it out.

considering doing my ones to be fair. the van has lived a light life though only hauling lawn mowers and gardening tools/waste also only 99k miles

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

Again thanks for your help John. I will give it a go with a chisel first and if not order a blowtorch.

This Van hasn't had a hard life either. last owner used it for moving motorbikes about and I only use it for camping. It's done 108k. Don't really want to loose it yet. Fingers crossed.

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

hmm i'll really have to check mine over and see then.

i had a citroen BX that i rebuilt the rear axle on. rather than bushes it used bearings. all well and good till the seals failed. i rebuilt it better and stronger though using proper lip seals. i did so much work to that car, should have stuck with it really but a suspension issue made me sell it on. no matter what i changed it always snapped pump belts. pretty sure the new keeper is still plagued with the issue after taking it to specialists too.

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

The hacksaw or tigersaw does the trick.
If you look at the new bushings you can see they have a metall tube on the outside, this is what you need to cut thru.
Once you are thru a flat end screwdriver will push it out, no need for the special tool.
But the special tools is good for getting the new ones back in. I found that the new bushings needed a bit bigger chamfer to get them in, the 45degree from factory was just making it a pain.

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

Thanks John (love BX's) & Johan,  a £3.78 Chisel from Amazon and a lot of effort and finally got it out! The several cuts/grooves definitely helped and I definitely needed the press to get the new one in. Only thing I'm struggling with now is getting it to line up to put the bolt back through it. Just can't get it over enough.mini_IMG_20200711_141643363.jpegmini_IMG_20200711_145815874.jpeg

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

All done! I tried to cheat and do it without removing the Coil Spring but there was no way I could line the bolt hole up. So out came the Spring compressors.
The other side can wait. There's not really a lot of movement that side and I need to recover lol.
Thanks ever so much John for your help, Johan too. You gave me the motivation to carry on with it when I thought I'd have to call it a day.
The Press I bought really wasn't going to remove the old bushing. All i did was crush about 20 washers & the bearings supplied. It was however good at installing the new bush. Took a lot of effort and you need a breaker bar to wind it in though. Feel quite chuffed now  cool

Re: Rear Axle/Beam bushes

heh i have the rear axle off my van at the moment. i just completely removed it. only 5 bolts hold it in. i clamped the brake hoses to stop fluid leaking out.. not something i like to do but i am replacing them anyway.

glad i took it off, plenty of surface rust that i have cleaned up now..  check my camper thread in my sig for photos.

got bushes on order, mine are still serviceable, but while i have it all out i may as well change them
