Retrofitting standard rear windows

Hello,

I recently bought a 2003 Peugeot Expert and I'm going to have a go at converting it with a bed etc.

I got a very good deal on some rear windows with the gaskets intact, but my van has the solid back doors.

Has anyone ever cut the holes in their rear doors to fit the standard windows? Or am I asking for trouble?

I don't really want to buy the doors with the holes already in because the van was cheap, and I'm trying to do everything on a shoestring (like a practice run) since it'll probably tank the next MOT or explode beforehand based on my luck!

Thanks,

Dave

Re: Retrofitting standard rear windows

On my last van i just binned the doors and bought ones out the scrap yard with glass. Think i paid 50 quid for the two. This van i have now has glass what i dont need as its a work van. I would swap if you are in the mid to east lothian area but they are a tad tatty.

Re: Retrofitting standard rear windows

Ah that's a kind offer thanks but unfortunately I'm in the South West...

I didn't even consider the scrap yards as I haven't been in years, I just hopped on ebay and paid £40 for the set of windows delivered. Whole doors with glass were a lot more expensive on there so I thought I'd had a bargain but I guess not!

I think I'll try cutting one of my doors still, I guess if it goes wrong it's easy enough to go down the replacement route after, I just wondered if anyone had a horror story to put me off first  lol

Re: Retrofitting standard rear windows

I dont think it would be that hard TBH. I put glass in a neighbours van to get the DVLA stamp of approval for motor caravan but it was square. What i did was offer the glass to the steel and felt pen round the glass. Cut about 1mm wider and put the rubber round the hole. Put glass in and any tight areas when trying to fold rubber over i ground away a bit steel but not over board. Luck if a MM TBH. Once the glass was in i sealed with Sikaflex as as yet its still never leaked.

Re: Retrofitting standard rear windows

I know for the sliding doors I looked into this, and unfortunately you can't just add the glass because the windowed doors have a slight recess which the panel ones don't.

Re: Retrofitting standard rear windows

hmm yea I could see that being a problem on the side, but from what I can see from some admittedly blurry ebay photos is that the glassless window rear doors have the same recess as the panel ones, just with a hole in it?

I guess I won't know until I try, but I'm going to finish hooking up my reverse camera first (one job at a time!).

Re: Retrofitting standard rear windows

I'll need to have a proper look........
How can you tell? .................

Although it has retro fitted glass to the side of the van and having windows in rear doors.......

I'm sure I saw the factory build specs of this van and it was a "815  enterprise" Windowless van with double passenger seat ..........
Which bears no relation to this vehicle now...........

Although not converted as a WAV First........... I'm unsure if it was heading that way before Camper Van build as it would fit some of the story we were told before purchase and explain why at 8 yrs old and with it's original owner it had only done 38,000 mls

Re: Retrofitting standard rear windows

Well I finally got around to it, and the first one went in fairly easily at least. I followed the template visible on the inside of the door with a nibbler tool on my drill and the window / gasket went in after a bit of swearing and pinched fingertips. So the visible shape is all good to follow if anyone else needs to do this!

You're a braver (wo)man than me! I'd be terrified cutting that out, I'm glad it went well for you  big_smile
