Where the trailing arm meets the rear axle? Mine doesn't anymore

Been driving round the last few days feeling like the back isn't quite as stiff as it should be. Planning for rear axle bushes, hence my earlier post

Well, the good news is the bushes are fine. The bad news...

That ain't right.

I noticed it when going over speed bumps, it felt like one side was going over it before the other, which seemed odd. Makes perfect sense now neutral

Looking at a new axle. Can I assume they're all the same across all brands and post-face-lift?

wowzers! i have never seen that before! yeah mk1 and 2 are the same axle. i would be tempted to get one from a taxi scrappers as they are usually really cheap. most industrial estates has some kind of place that work on taxis

id repaint it and cavity wax it too while i had it off... i did it with mine..

Rust is part of every story I have with this van hmm Probably part of its Scottish coastal heritage

I'm SO glad this happened on some speed bumps and not the M60 I was on a few minutes before!

Yea that corrosion on the MOT history told an accurate story, it's been a feature of every interaction. But it's been very good to me, I've done a lot of miles in the last two years.

No regrets, I know this is likely my last chance to have the mighty XUD so I'm happy to keep investing in keeping it my home

Two year, Would never have thought TBH. Aye totally get what you are saying with investing in it. I always buy end of line cars but if not a rot box and has a good engine i am happy to pay 400 quid a year on an MOT as i know i would not hire a car for a year for that money not get another as trustworthy. Unfortunately my wifes Fiat Siecento was wanting to much welding for MOT as in total strip down and new floor. That and a few other things made it uneconomical so bought a VW Fox for 500.

As for your van when under i think i would be looking at everything when under there. Treat/fix and probably underseal. How is them front wishbones. Hollow and do take a beating so for the price i would be thinking of changing also.

Agreed, it needs a lot of love under there. I'm very glad the subframe has been replaced, that's very clean. And the fuel tank cradle. There's lots of crumbling at the back corners that I'm always nervous of.

I'll be pleased to have a new axle on here, and I'll treat it to some new springs. Wishbones were done on the last MOT so all good there smile

Were these vans Galvanised? OK only my 2nd but apart from sills and the odd arch surface rust i have never seen a rot box one. Do you do your own welding? I would say the back end would be one of the easiest areas to weld up. Just a pain in the arse stripping your living area out. So glad my new to me convoy has a wooden floor and fiberglass body. Apart from cab cage and chassis the rest is stainless steel also. Just when i was getting the hang of a gasless welder as well big_smile

Ill have sills to do on my dispatch for MOT so can get some practice then big_smile

Progress update - got hold of a replacement axle in Bolton, my brother's picked it up. Just need to get it to the garage, hopefully to be worked on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday

It appears to be black though? Why's it not browny-orange and crumbling like my one? :confused:

Bit of crumbliness on the rear left, that puts me at ease neutral

Got recovered last night. Recovery in covid times is strange! I was to sit in my van while it was on the back of the truck yikes It was a lot of terrifying fun!

That was only to Tesco, they then paid for the £91 taxi to follow the truck. Yikes, I only paid £90 for the breakdown policy

Van and axle at the garage now. Hopefully won't take too long...

I think your right about Coastal Heritage.... long used around seaside regions ETC...........

I've assited on fitting replacement rear axles on a good few PSA cars {Either through wear or rot} and a A class Merc that was broken through rot ..........

I'd Say in your case rust protection from inside out is a problem to maybe solve and obviously the shock of the speed hump at that point was a bridge to far...........

{It doesn't seem that long ago the day they installed traffic calming measures a peugeot 405 front suspension colapsed on said hump...... they reduced severity of humps}

New axle fitted! 3 days in a hotel and now I'm back on the road, what a relief.

Including a front wheel bearing I got replaced at the time, got the lot done for £300 + the £100 axle (+£100 hotel stay =/)

I'm well chuffed, it feels so much nicer. Aside from the better handling (wonder why?) the brakes on the new axle's hubs are so much keener and my handbrake engages so much more firmly, after only 3 clicks instead of topping out and barely holding

So here's the old one in its very sorry state

I would feel happy at a total of 500 if i knew my van was a good un TBH. Glad you are back on the road. Proper bed and shower for three nights you posh git big_smile

I had no hesitation spending the money on it - £500 is a worthwhile investment in my home.

Yeah my front subframe on my Dispatch not in excellent condition but I have MoT till next November and a nice black painted subframe on my old Scudo in the back yard. Already had the custom made stainless exhaust system and gear change cables as well as rear headliner and some door cards off it. I'm so glad I didn't scrap it when the engine threw bits of crank out through the sump. Come to think about it, it has a better gear box than the Dispatch as well. big_smile

Wow what a mission/mess, mines is very rusty but has not broken off yet, bushes and springs seem OK but I think the shocks have had it, rather get a scrapper pair first to test first... I think it's got a bit more life in it than your one though bud, jesus, glad no major injuries/damage when that happened, lucky! smile

Oooh tell me what makes you think your shocks are past it. I'm suspecting mine because it's very hard at the back. Yours too?
