Expert 2003 hdi, intermittent non start

Hi

My expert sometimes starts sometimes doesn’t. If I don’t hear the fuel pump on the ignition I know it won’t fire but always cranks. Changed the fuel relay.

I’ve left the key in the ignition and connected and disconnected the positive battery terminal. Sometimes I hear the fuel pump and fuel relay, sometimes I don’t. Every time I get the clicks on the relay I hear the fuel pump and it starts. Any idea what should happen between ignition power and fuel pump?

Cheers

Scott

In this crap cold weather dont try and start your van when the light goes out. Listen for the glow plug relay to click and try try that. Very sub temps you can do the glowplug cycle twice

Thanks but it’s been 12 degrees at the moment.
Won’t start unless I can hear the fuel pump on turning the ignition. Within ten minutes I can start it and not start it several times.

Do you not hear the fuel pump on the second stage of turning the ignition key?

Well as its blowing a hooley i took the van to the shop and can confirm i hear nothing. Just a faint click what may be the pump relay then nothing till the glowplug relay clicks off what is a tad lounder than first relay

Our 1.9s don't have fuel pumps, just the one driven by the timing belt

Re: Expert 2003 hdi, intermittent non start

I'm not so sure the HDI glow plug system works in the traditional way like the idi of a DW8 ...............
31 years ago I bought a 1988...1635 Mercedes artic unit/truck ............
it was A Uk spec Direct injection V8.............
It had No glow plugs fitted at all ..............................

These symptoms of an intermittent running of fuel pump and non starting ...............
Sound like cruddy conections at pump possibly.........
Or a worn and poor connecting ignition barrel to induce the fuel pump.............

Even possibly a sticky stop solinoid............
Which plagued for long enough a friend of mine with intermittent Starting :~ Dispatch Van [But it is fitted with a DW8]..........

Update:

If I put a magnet on the fuel pump relay near the battery it turns the fuel pump on and then will start.
Unfortunately it then puts the engine management light on??

Re: Expert 2003 hdi, intermittent non start

My problem turned out to be something else, but I bought a fuel pump relay from ebay for about a tenner last week. The part number is 240107, it seems to be generic for many vehicles and can be had cheap if you search the part number (whereas individual listings for an exact vehicle cost a lot more but are the same part).
