Forum went down!

Noticed the forum went down today, I assume a minor whoops

It occurred to me though that we have a great little community here, and it would be a shame to lose the hub of that if we had a bigger disaster.

Tiree, would it be worth having some way to get in touch that's not dependent on the dispatchexpertscudo.org.uk domain?

Re: Forum went down!

Maybe we could share contact details so we can keep in touch in case the forum ever does go deadsies. Don't fancy posting them publicly though!

Re: Forum went down!

Not saying do this to jump ship but...... If Tiree is on the run from some big bank job you can get 100% free forums from phpbb. How fast it efficient they are i dont know but n a few forums where the owners pay and its quite good forum software. If someone was to make a quick forum it will need folk to log in and post something i think weekly before its shut down or has anyone mailed Tiree lately? His mail address is on the free stickers page/post

No i dont like the idea also but if he cant be contacted and this place does grind to a halt then its to late. I am suggesting a plan B in place. If Tiree gets out of jail early big_smile then fine. Business here as usual and delete the plan B.

Re: Forum went down!

This a really friendly helpful forum, If it's only a money thing, maybe a small sub from members would help Tiree towards the running costs.

Re: Forum went down!

The idea of some support via subs or some other means has arisen before and Tiree suggested it was not necessary.  If this has changed, I would be happy to contribute.
I think even more important than the continuation of the forum though is the preservation of the accumulated information.  The forum could relatively easily be recreated but the info might be lost.

Re: Forum went down!

Eek!

Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated!

Sorry folks - just been busy and took my eye off the ball a little  big_smile

The downtime was due to an oversight [card details expired!] - sorry if that looked bad!

This does bring up some valid points though and here are some thoughts:

  • The software this forum is built on is old and I DO need to move it to a new platform.

  • Setting up a new forum is easy - migrating the existing content is a big [but important] task

  • This forum more than pays for itself with adverts [thanks for the suggestion of subs though scotchjoe]

So ... what to do:

  • I'll research a route out of our current forum into a new one - preferably onto a platform that has an existing migration path from our current system.

  • Ken has kindly emailed me separately about this - I'll consult with him on next steps and with his and the forum's permission, I'll add him as an admin of the site.

  • I'd also like to add a couple of moderators to the forum - just to help keep an eye on things and move topics to the correct forums etc - let me know below if you would like to volunteer.

Thanks for caring about this wee forum! We're nearly 8 years old, have almost 800 users and just about to hit 10k posts. On top of the great community - we also help 200-300 odd lurkers who pass through every day.

I totally agree that it's all worth protecting.

C

Re: Forum went down!

Congratulations on not being dead or being in jail big_smile

I do find myself twithought a Expert/Scudo/Dispatch again but do still use this forum now and then and as i have had a lot of help from the place if it did come to subs i also would still be willing to pay so if things ever change dont be shy in saying so

i remember when FiatForum moved over to the new software..  it was fun.. missing content and whatnot.
if you need a mod for the mk1/2 section ill help out.. i have experience and im sure ben (the boss) over at the FiatForum will vouch for me.
