I hope so.  He wanted a van for his girlfriend and himself to use for holidays.  Sad to see it go in some ways, it's been a part of my life for the last four years.  The next one will come in October/November.  Until then I'm on my bike. smile

#3 Re: General Discussion » Citroen jumpy 1998 where to put jack and Jack stands? » 2025-07-07 01:44:33

I put a block of wood under the spring holder cup and then jack under that.  It works ok.  The axle stands go under the two jacking points under the sills.  For the front I just pick the biggest chunk of steel frame, put the block of wood between the steel and the jack and up it goes.  But I do have a 3 ton trolley jack for this, so less hassle.

Glad to see I'm not the only person with that issue.  Mine can't go far because I have a deadlock between the two doors that stops them opening, but it does rattle like crazy when it happens.

Honestly the height inside is a big chunk of the reason.  So I have my eye on a slightly damaged ex post office Expert mk2, so i'm not really selling up, more of an upgrade type affair, assuming it's still available after I've sold it.  Same engine, same pretty much everything, but the roof in the back is somewhat higher and I think the van is slightly longer.  I think in these vans it would amount to a LWB, medium roof, not that a LWB Expert is as long as probably a SWB transit, but I think the load length in the LWB MK2 is maybe a foot longer than my current one.  It would be nice to be able to stretch out when sleeping.  Right now my head is pretty much against the back doors and my feet in the back of the passenger seat.  When i sit on the bed I have to lean forward or my head hit's the roof.  It's one of the reasons I did minimal insulation on the roof.

In terms of everything it's a solid van and if I had the skill set of JohnDragonMan or some of the rest of you, plus the workshop and tools, I would have taken it off the road and dropped the gearbox and fixed it.  But I don't have the kit for it, nor the knowledge/experience.  I can do most basic mechanical tasks, but i'm happy to admit when it's beyond my level (timing belts, engine issues, etc). I should have sold it last year, but I left it too late and (tbh) after shelling out the best part of a grand to get it through MOT I wanted to get a years use out of it.  But it's time for it to become someone else's project. smile

Next one will be upgraded beyond my current spec.  A new project, with new higher specs.  I want something that is Arctic capable for a start, so i can go hit Norway.  The current one would need a lot of changes to make it to that spec.  Which is another reason to sell it and get a new blank canvas.

--------------------------------------

This is my partially converted camper van project.  I ran out of money while converting it.  But it works well as a base that you can put on a camp site or as an off grid place to sleep while wild camping.

The van is well maintained.  I service it myself yearly. Two oil filter changes per year, air filter before MOT and an oil change). It had a complete new exhaust last year.  Timing belt and water pump were done shortly after I bought it in 2021.  I put new brake shoes on the offside back wheel this year before MOT and I did the front pads two years ago.  Gearbox fluid was changed when i bought it.  MOT is next due 02/05/2026 (10 months left).

MOT History: www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/results?registration=LN06OHZ

It’s done about 5000 miles per year since I bought it, but exact mileage is unknown as the light bulb for the LCD odometer failed a couple of months after I bought it.  I was told since it’s an LCD you can shine a torch through from the back to work it out but I haven’t managed to do that.  The mileage doesn’t seem to be available using an OBD scanner either.  When I bought it, it had done roughly 163,000 miles.  I’ve done roughly 20,000 more.

It contains a bed that was designed to allow a PortaPotti 365 to be placed under it.  It has basic 12V electrics, such as, 12V battery, split charge relay, 100W solar panel, 10A dual output controller (30%  goes to the vehicle battery, 70% to the leisure battery), one strip light (connected to the vehicle battery) and two bulkhead lights (currently unconnected), a 12V fan, two USB chargers and a dual cigarette lighter socket.  There is an additional 8.5mm2 wire running from the battery area to the other side of the van that could be used for a diesel heater or water pump if you wanted to add one. There is also a Vango double hob gas cooker that uses screw top gas cartridges (such as the ones sold at Home Bargains for £2 a can) and a small sink which I have never really used (since most camp sites have washing facilities and I carry a bowl so I can wash pots outside if I need to).

Like all vans of this age it has corrosion in places.  I tried to head this off when I first bought it by cleaning up all rust patches I could find, painting with rust stabiliser and then putting a couple of coats of hammerite over them and anything else that might rust, namely the sills, pillars and some other parts of the underside.  It’s an ongoing maintenance job.  I have never had an MOT fail or advisory due to corrosion.

Issues

- There is a power steering fluid leak somewhere on the low pressure hosing, that developed a couple of months back.  I have tried to find it, but without any luck.  So for now I top the fluid up when needed.
- When driving it is necessary to hold the gear stick in place when using the first, second and reverse gears.  If you don’t you hear a whirring noise.  I’m told there is a small catch in the gearbox that wears out over time that holds the gears in place.  If not it might be the cable between the stick and the gearbox that has stretched over time.  Fixing it was beyond my budget and my mechanic skills are not at that level.  If yours are and you have facilities to do it, it might be possible to fix it.  So far my workaround has been to hold the stick in place while in those gears and I’ve had no issues while doing so.  In third, fourth or fifth it isn’t an issue.
- The windscreen has several fixed chips.  It did when I bought it.  It’s never been flagged on the MOT. I’m told because they aren’t in the direct field of view.
- The internal fan/blower system doesn’t work.  I think it’s the switch and I will try and get the switch off and see if I can fix it in the next week.
- The brakes are noisy at times, but it’s passed every MOT without any braking issues.  I asked the garage that did the MOT and they said they didn’t notice anything when testing.
- The driver side, side door doesn’t fully seal.  I tend to use a wedge to hold the top of the door in.  The issue is the top roller is worn.  I got quoted £50 for a new roller, which I obviously won’t pay because it’s extortionate for a small piece of plastic.  You could probably 3D Print a new one if you have access to a printer
- The radio doesn’t work.
- Drivers side, side door deadlock works, but doesn’t hold the door.  The bracing plate on the door is missing.  Since I wasn’t going to use it I never got another plate for it.

Other things

1.  There is a three bar roof rack for the van that will be included.
2.  I will throw in some spares with the van.  There are a set of front brake pads, a spare brake shoe for the back brakes and a set of discs for the front brakes.  Also some fluids, oil and a can of gas.
3.  There is an awning rail on the driver side that could be used with a drive away awning or sun shelter/awning.  I put it on originally intending to buy a drive away awning, but never got one in the end.

So I finally decided to sell my van.  So I put it on ebay yesterday and today I get an email telling me about that site.  Now if I'd known about it yesterday I might have used it, but right now i'm down £20 on the ebay fees and not sure I want to shell another £35 out straight away.

So wondering if anyone here has used them?  Are they any good or a scam?

Speculative question.  Does anyone know if say a Peugeot Partner front seat could be installed in an Expert?

So I am looking at buying a Euro 5 Expert, specifically I am looking at the L2H2 version.  But this one must have two single front seats.  I don't care if they swivel. I just want to be able to easily get into the back without getting out of the van.  But finding a reasonably priced front seat seems to be quite a bit harder than the last time I did it.

#9 Re: Maintenance » Rear door lights Mk1 facelift » 2025-04-25 01:20:15

I have one working light on the numberplate.  I did wonder about blanking the top brake light.  Right now it has a red lens on it, but it could be replaced with a white plastic cover or taped or painted.  The other brake lights work.

So I would fix everything, but I do have to get rid of this van, as much as it pains me.  Just waiting to get another MOT, then this van will go on the usual selling sites.

#10 Re: Maintenance » Rear door lights Mk1 facelift » 2025-04-24 12:07:12

Yeah my top one neither works, nor contains any wires or a light fitting.  Last years MOT the guy said to me your top light isn't working, so I was like well throw a new bulb in it, but when he opened it up there was no fitting or wiring going to it.  The numberplate light is something that got flagged up a couple of years back as an advisory.  I haven't fixed it.  Don't intend to either unless they both go or it becomes a major fault.

#13 Re: Maintenance » Heater/Fan sliding control » 2025-03-07 04:56:36

And without doing anything, it has started working again, all the time. neutral

So i'm convinced it's a grounding issue.  I'm going to grab one of those prebuilt battery leads they sell at Halfords and make a new chassis ground point somewhere near the battery and connect it to it.  Then at least one decent ground will exist for the vehicle.

#14 Re: Maintenance » Heater/Fan sliding control » 2025-03-04 16:37:21

It does work/change if I slide it, but then it drops out.  It's happened a few times now.  I can replicate it sometimes by reversing into a space and then putting the handbrake on, but it seems to be getting less likely to trigger when I do that.

The alarm box removal wasn't hard or complicated.  As I remember I just pulled the connector out of the back and clipped the cable tie holding it in place.  Mine was going off, sounding the horn and flashing the indicators when the battery got low and it was cold.  It also didn't work aside from that.  I suspect it might have been tied to the key remote central locking that doesn't work because the coded key has been removed from the van ecu at a guess (it starts on a generic unchipped key).

I'm currently wondering whether to create a new grounding point, wire it into a busbar and then connect it to the back of the internal fuse board.  So it has a stable ground.  but first i'm going to reconnect the radio, get the instrument console back out and see if I did something stupid back there or see if there's any loose or random wires I can see.  Failing all else, find the grounds coming out of that alarm connector, radio, instrument console and connect them to a new grounding point on the chassis.  Since when applying the brake, the only light that comes on is the one on then instrument console, my guess is the grounding issue is between there and the heater.

#15 Re: Maintenance » Heater/Fan sliding control » 2025-03-04 15:03:37

I've been trying to work out in my mind what could have caused this.  Last night I pulled in at Tesco and the second I pulled on the handbrake, the fan fired up and just ran until i switched the engine off.  When i restarted it after shopping it fired up for a bit until I took the handbrake off.  This all started when i went looking for that alarm box I found under the steering column.  The clock on the instrument panel is running slow, where as before I did everything it was fine.  There was a wire in the back of the radio held in by a screw.  Since the radio lost it's code and doesn't work I just took that wire and taped it.

I'm wondering if the alarm box removal, that wire or the fact i didn't reconnect the radio has caused this issue.  If the control is on the ground current and the ground was dodgy and one of those components was creating an alternative ground in the circuit, would that account for why my blower has glitched and the clock runs slow?  No idea, but i'm going to try plugging the radio in, then maybe try plugging the alarm back in.  See if it makes any difference.

After that i'll have another go at removing the dash and see if I can work out what isn't working and maybe bypass the power to the fan if needs be and run it from somewhere else.

Thanks Reg.

So from what i'm seeing the heater control is a single unit and the avg price is £70.  Needless to say I have no interest in paying £70, since only the on/off slider is broken.  Is it possible to bypass the slider and use a variable switch, like a variable resistor type fan control switch, ie, a £5 part?  If it ran all the time at minimum or didn't switch off i'd be ok with that, or if it ran at full all the time and had to be put on a rocker switch.

@kenbw2, Do you by any chance have any pics of how your rotational knob switch is wired up to the fan, as highlighted in this (old) thread?

#17 Re: Maintenance » What Makes Rear Auto Brake Adjusters Work? » 2025-03-03 18:25:40

So I did the one with the grinding/grating noise.  Pads were soaked black in god knows what, but best guess is brake fluid. After much faffing and swearing I got the new one on, but their was one spring i couldn't get my head around.  I think I put it back on correctly.  It was on one side of the adjuster.  I don't think the self adjuster works.  I cleaned it up as best I could and it spins, but i don't know if it actually works.  Still need to swap the other side and then tackle adjusting the hand brake cable as it's now loose (was on enough to stop wheels moving at 3 clicks before I replaced the shoes and now at 5 clicks it barely holds, but the foot brake now works really well).

Next comes the brake pads on the front.

I hope to sell this van before the MOT in May, but might just put it through on a mock MOT and see if it comes back with anything major.

#18 Re: Camper Conversions » JohnDragonMan's Dispatch Camper Conversion » 2025-02-22 15:40:16

The one that seriously pisses me off is this one.

Vehicle Excise Duty bands and rates for motorcycles
Engine Size     Tax year 2023 to 2024     Tax year 2024 to 2025     Tax year 2025 to 2026
Not over 150cc     24     25     26

When I bought my Vara 125 about 10 years back it was £12/year.  IMO it should never have gone up this much.  It's not like a 125 is as polluting as 2L.

Don't know what the tax on my van is currently, think about £170 every 6 months.  I never had the money to drop the £310 or whatever it is for a year.  Insurance was £300.  I would love to know how John got his for under £100.  Cheapest I could ever get was the one I got from Lexham and have been using them for the last three years.

I heard it was going up a lot this year due to the Labour wankers wanting older vehicles off the road.  I'm selling my van this year and looking for a SWB Transit in a Euro 5 variant.  Can't afford a Euro 6, but a Euro 5 will knock something off the road tax and also let me go a few more places abroad if I want to.

You know i've looked into picking up a second hand electric van for the last three years.  Kind of settled on something like the Nissan e-NV200, especially if i can find the high roof version the gas board use (very rare).  If I had more money, then i'd be looking for PHEV (with the battery and a small engine to charge it) given the fact you can always find a petrol station, but not always a charging station. Or Ford do a MHEV Transit that i've seen in L2 H3 config, which would suit me.    Right now I don't have the cash for any purchases of that level, but have seen second hand 40kWh e-NV200's for £5000-6000 and they would likely be what i'd look for assuming they worked out a better deal than a standard diesel.

I did read about a guy that wandered France for a month in an e-NV200 and spent only 60 euros on charging for the entire trip by using mostly free charging points.  Apparently some supermarkets have enough solar panels to offer free charging for EV's if you buy something.

I'm hoping this isn't the start of a loom/old wires issue.  I think you guys warned me of such a thing when I first joined and bought the van.  So far it's been pretty bulletproof, until last April, then things started to go wrong.

I had a few issues and never got mine off.  I removed the radio and basket thing for it (I wondered if this caused some of the electrical issues as I found several wires with screws holding them in place behind the radio), removed the seven bolts under the various panels, removed the instrument display, but it seemed almost like I'd missed one at that point.  But i'm sure John said there are only seven bolts holding it in place.  Maybe there is an eighth bolt.  I think I got them all though.

#21 Re: Maintenance » Heater blower fan location » 2025-02-19 17:39:37

So the saga continues.  Sorry I didn't reply, i've been offline for a bit.

So I cleaned up the switch.  So when the blower works, so does the switch, but it doesn't appear to be the issue.  I found a weird thing with the blower.  If I've been driving in it for say 20 mins and then reverse into a space and then put the handbrake on, the blower starts running.  So to confirm it.  At my house, I put it in reverse, disengaged the clutch a little, then put the handbrake on and took it out of gear, in that order.  The blower then sprung to life.  It doesn't work if you only do one or the other.  Also if I disable the VSR between the vehicle battery and leisure battery, the reverse/handbrake thing doesn't work.

So I have no fkin clue what is causing it.  I am thinking electrical issue.  Could a bad earth or connection be the issue?  Either way it looks like I need to remove the dash.  But with the VSR thing I'm wondering the leisure battery side is causing the issue.  I did put a completely new earth in for the LB side (bolt through a steel panel with paint removed to allow good contact, then wired into a busbar).  But I do, do something weird with the solar controller.  I have two outputs on the controller, so I send one to the leisure battery (70% of the power) and I put the second on the other side of the VSR so I can back charge the vehicle battery (30%).  I wonder if that is an issue.

#22 Re: Maintenance » Advice Needed: Head Gasket Replacement on 2005 Citroën Dispatch 1.9D » 2025-02-02 22:29:51

I tried to do this long ago on an old Fiesta, it didn't go well.  During the year with severe flooding (2007) I had to drive through Derbyshire out near Ladybower Reservoir and I ended up going through a bunch of water and some got sucked up through the air intake for the engine.  This caused the same problem as you have, OP.  High pressure in the engine that caused a mass of problems.  I ran some engine clean through the engine and dumped the oil, then refilled the oil and swapped the filter, then dropped that an hour or so later.  Then put a new head gasket on it.  Torqued everything up to spec, reassembled.  New oil and filter.  Started up, didn't fix it completely.  I took it to the garage I use and it needed the extra work that Reg described.  It wasn't a cheap job.  I had the belt and pump done at the same time since this was pretty much an engine strip.

The good thing is once it's done, you should be good for a while.

#23 Re: Maintenance » Heater blower fan location » 2025-02-02 20:10:10

It's acting weird.  So it hasn't failed apparently, at least I don't think the issue is the blower, per se, as it suddenly burst into life yesterday at full power.  At other times it seems to run at different levels, almost like as I rev it and the amps increase, so does the fan motor speed.  This week I am going to try and check the wiring on both the switch and the blower unit.  I have this nagging feeling that the issue is electrical.  Maybe a bad earth or something else like that.  I( also wondered if the battery was the issue, but fans really shouldn't be pulling that sort of amperage.  I don't use the air con, I think the last time I depressed that switch was the day i bought the van, just to test it worked, but I've not used it ever since.

#24 Re: Maintenance » Heater blower fan location » 2025-01-30 00:18:20

This has become my next job.  I don't know if it's packed up or has some wiring issue.  Going to blast the switch out tomorrow with some wd-40 and see if that fixes it.  If not, well it's check the wires, then move to the blower.

My van has air con, not that I've ever used it, so will there be a second fan or was that specific to your build style, John?

#25 Re: Maintenance » What Makes Rear Auto Brake Adjusters Work? » 2025-01-30 00:14:16

I need a dry day to do it and i'm very tempted to overhaul both sides. The pistons weren't great on the passenger side when I took it apart, but it still passed MOT last year without any issue.  I do have the shoes and the bits you need to do an overhaul, so maybe I will do that.  But might do the front pads first as they are super easy.  I think the bit that worries the most is the handbrake cable.  I think if you overhaul you have to readjust it, or I at least think I read that somewhere.
