Never going to happen
But if pushed, i'd choose a particular model of Tranny that i drove while subbying for Parcelforce a couple of years ago. No idea which variant it was, but it was a medium or long wheelbase with a short rear overhang, a low roof, rear wheel drive (i think) and quite small steel wheels (not one of the really hip swb fwd ones). Basic trim, delivery van spec.
My goodness that van was stunning. Provoked just a tinge of unfaithfulness to old Brenda ?
Hi Jumpy Joe, I'll kick the replies off with this, which may or may not help. I'm running my DW10RHZ engine with the MAF sensor disconnected, and have been for several months now. It was done to stop the excessive blasts of black exhaust smoke I was seeing under acceleration.
The effects of disconnecting the MAF have been:
(1) no more smoke
(2) slightly higher fuel consumption
(3) annoying turbo lag at low revs
Whether the sensor needs cleaning, or whether it is incompatible with my engine variant, I haven't got round to investigating yet. It was an eBay purchase, and fits the hose fine, but clearly it wasn't doing a great job at maintaining the correct air/fuel mix to the engine.
I plan to replace it with an OEM part soon....not particularly cheap in the UK.
Hoping to use my van for a Norway trip in the future!
Oh dear. You've got me thinking now...have I also got the wrong cables? My van is an '04 facelift and these are the cables I ordered last year.
Like you, I haven't got round to fitting them yet.
Darned sideways photos !
Today's progress.... rear and sliding doors stuffed with b&q plastic insulation. Sealed with tape. Old door cards covered in 3-way stretch and reinstalled.
Not entirely happy as the top panel was slightly warped, so there is a bulge. I might just

learn to live with it....
I like the idea of under-the-bonnet. Aside from having to reroute the screenwash pipe, did you have to move anything else? Did you have to make some kind of bracket to hold the battery in place? It's a very neat job.
Tee Cee I know who to call next time I need a sink plumbing in....?
Can I ask what sort of battery you've got Vaz ? Do you have any holes cut in the side as vents ?
Where have folks fitted their leisure batteries in the mk1?
I was planning to fit one in the space under the middle passenger seat, but thinking about the need for ventilation and/or a proper battery compartment, I'm now thinking about putting it on the flat platform just ahead of the driver's side rear wheelarch and boxing it in, sealed to the inside but with an external vent for safety.
Any advice most welcome
Funnily enough I was wondering exactly the same thing. Mine is lined with felt. I was about to squirt it full of expanding foam as it is in the way of my insulation.
All interesting stuff, will look up these destinations.
Won't be going anywhere till the engine is properly sorted though. I bought a used DW10 from a supplier in Burnley a year ago and had a mate fit it. It's basically strong and smooth - new turbo helps with that - but there is a clattery top-end sound, like a mk3 Cortina taxi in the 70s. Weird and annoying. You can hear a tappety noise when accelerating, especially under bridges or when driving past high walls.
Been told it is probably an injector. Should I worry - anyone had this issue?
Maybe this should be in the maintenance thread..
Wouldn't want the engine to blow up in Sweden or somewhere
I wouldn't mind doing the trip up to Lofoten in North Norway, via Sweden. But a lot of practice lies ahead first...
They're good, you stick them to the inner bodywork then ram the celotex down onto them. It can be tricky lining it up so best to take some time over this.
No need to glue the celotex; once you push the clip down the pin shafts, it grips very tightly. You then snip the pin off with pliers. I've stuck corks on the tips to prevent getting stabbed in the head....they're very sharp :-)
I used thin plywood battens between the celotex sheets to spread the weight from above
Yes Vaz
I can confirm, you are looking at the underside.
Not sure why the photos uploaded twice but anyway?
Second photo is the floor I made up at work, free plywood, battens, carpet glue, 12.5mm celotex, used the original plywood floor as template.
And yup...before anyone mentions it, this will all be sealed in with a vapour barrier ... soon
I had a smoke problem. My mk1 HDI was kicking out a cloud of black diesel smoke under acceleration, more than was acceptable under social norms.
So I had my mechanic friend investigate and he says it was the new MAF sensor that I bought last year. It was £12.95 and apparently OEM compatible. It's now disconnected which has got rid of the smoke. Was causing the engine to run rich.
Should I fit a new MAF sensor, or is there an adjustment I can make somewhere to change the air/fuel mix? any thoughts appreciated.....
If we survive Coronavirus, my wife and I are planning to drive up to Scotland in Brenda. Quite a trip from Devon...I used to do it regularly when I first had the van in 2011 on my epic courier trips.
Back then, I would do Devon to London, up through Yorkshire, on to Glasgow and Oban, then down to Merseyside followed by the Midlands and South Wales. Once I finished up in Cornwall after a week-long trip. That was when the van was younger and reliable...
To return to Scotland in the same vehicle years later will be an emotional moment. Eastern side of Scotland this time I think. European trips will follow if the van proves itself capable.
Best get on with fixing the steering rack first though.
Now I have no excuse to avoid the next job which is to try and get the spare wheel cradle working and de-rusted...it looks like it's been lying at the bottom of the sea for many years. Kind of fortunate that I've never had a puncture in Brenda....explosions, clouds of steam, coolant all over the road, yep...all of them....but no puncture.
well, honestly
you could have knocked me down with a feather
NINE YEARS
who knew??
thanks!
