Bah I knew they would have done do something to make it incompatible so you can't put the larger alternator on.
I was worried when I bought a vehicle with an ECU.. guhh. No way at all to trick it into giving out full power all the time... Like how alternators used to be? To be honest I would rather change the regulator out with an old fashioned style that just uses a bit of resistance to excite the coils. It was a bit of a faf trying to get it in with the Aircon pump in the way.
I have become very lazy when it comes to working on vehicles.. I even paid someone to fit this for me. I did however go through all of the wiring to make sure it was all good.
Yeah costly but I managed to get it when it was on sale for about half the price.
Hmm how can I get the vin from in the house without going to where the van is parked up (miles away).. I sadly never use it much now the old panda is on the road.
AHH 5v should have it.. want me to PM it you?
so my old alternator went all smokey and red hot. kinda like a nuclear fission reaction. fun. glowing.
so i got it replaced with one from AutoDoc and.. its still not charging. the battery light is on, theres power getting to the main big connector on the alternator, the smaller connector is for the battery light with is lit up on the dash but somehow when the engine is running, its not charging.
i did go for the higher powered output alternator (all the same connections).. i guess it needs computer wizardry to make it work.. sigh why change things that have worked fine since alternators started being put on vehicles. sigh i guess they have to invent more ways of making money from you.
do you think i have done something wrong in my install? otherwise i cant figure it out. this is the one i bought:
its an air scoop for the fuel cooler. its not really needed. the issue being that it can be ripped off easy and damage the fuel cooler causing all of your fuel to leak out and you not know about it... till its too late.
im pretty sure they are only good for tweeters or high midrange.. sorry i like my audio. i could go full tism dump on speaker layout in a vehicle but ill refrain...
yes pipe number 2 is a solid plastic pipe it can rub if its not been bolted in.. or lost its bolt. as the engine move in the bay it tugs on the intercooler and can damage that by cracking it.
at least its fixed!
looking here:
https://eper.fiatforum.com/en/Drawings/ … ubSubGroup
nice little diagram that should make things more easy to identify with
i would say its number 1 that has failed. however it could be anything high up on that part of the engine.. maybe 8. that little number 1 pipe is what i would have my money on though.
usually its the 2x L shaped bits of pipe going into the intercooler.
who knows maybe it will just be the pipe that has blown off because a clip has failed.
hope this helps
yeah thats nice. looks like its been getting slightly warm.
ahh using solder as a thermal fuse.. thing is if you want it do break contact when it gets hot it never does! i have used solder as a fuse before though. leaves nice little beads of solder over a PCV which goes and shorts out other things. dont ask me how i know.
i do love a good wiring job though. i have built a custom 50cc scooter from a cheap chinese bike i bought from facebook. i hated how it had one 10 amp fuse for everything and a crappy 2 pole generator. now its running a full 3 phase generator and rectifier regulator, with a 8 bay fuse box and every electronic bit of the bike behind its own fuse. wire thicknesses were also upgraded and i even put high powered things like the headlights behind a relay! all cool stuff!
here have a look if you are interested.. i pretty much document most things i do.
i never thought my mindless ramblings would bring in a bit of cash every now and then but there you go!
the alternator has gone on my van
i just now have a solar panel on the roof which is now in place of the alternator. just keeping my eye on the battery voltage. when it gets below 11.5V i take the panda to work haha
so with me being a radio ham and my van looking like a porcupine with antennas, i like finding high up places to contact other ham radio users. a local place is Alport Heights and another is Middleton Top both in north derbyshire. sometimes i can be up there till it starts going light. i have a fair few stories of.. "advancements" while parked up. seen some shht too. stuff that made me cringe... and im a man of the internet.
i now have some magnetic signs that simply say "Security" on them that i put on the sides and back doors of my van. funny how everyone leaves when i roll up heh
sorry for spoiling your fun if any of you are a participant.
opening the link in Tor browser, i answered "no" to every question and they told me "i was in". even though i was not "18+ years old" or interested in dating. if only it was that easy in real life.
funny how i have been on every well known dating app and site for 10+ years (some since 2012) and somehow never had anything serious from it. hell ive only dated like 4 lasses in all that time all lasting under 1 month.
they instantly know i have the tism... which renders me ineart from acquiring a would be life mate. i have come to accept this and so fill the hole in my soul with "things" rather than love.
my other issue is that i like to go where people aren't. cant really meet someone in the middle of a woodland or logging track miles away from the nearest building. ugh people.
im not sure what they come on at. it must be over 100.c i have never had mine come on and i know they work.. the fans have 2 speeds too!
i know if it was mine, id weld it then grind it back smooth so its not noticable. id then make sure i rust proofed it internally
i still think the XUD is the best diesel engine. definitely sounds the best. i love the clatter of an XUD.. and damn miss it. i am tempted to put an XUD diesel engine in a vehicle i am building at the moment. i wanted to use the BMW N57.. but i cant find one to buy thats not damaged (the auto boxes kill the engines as it holds the RPMs to low for emissions reasons manuals are really rare)
i have had 2 XUDs one in a Citroen BX estate and one in a 306 estate. the BX was Bosch and the 306 was Lucas. the bosch was way better.
oh right.. seat bases... yeah ummm.. in my van i installed my own from a Transit Custom MPV. ahem. sorry
yeah same. it seems to go up each year by 20 to 30 quid. my 1991 fiat panda started off when i first bought it back in 2012 was £145 each year the price has gone up and now its £230 a year. its going to be quite a bit the year before it becomes tax exempt
what engine do you have? if its the XUD you can just wire to stop solenoid into an ignition live. done that a few times heh
i live by what i have put in my signature. subframes are doable.. its just them 4 rear bolts under the footwells. i'd ask a taxi place.. they repaired theses things constantly and will know all the tricks to do the job.
usually people that can skim heads can also pressure test heads too.. make sure theres no cracks.
it has been know on other cars that if a cheaper water pump is used it can break up and cause really poor flow through the system.
in regards to the reliability, we scrapped a E7 Eurocab which is basically the Peugeot Expert variant of this van. same engine and everything. that had over 600,000 miles on it and the 1 owner from new taxi driver told me that other than 50k mile cam belt, 6k mile oil, and 3 year coolant changes the engine head never needed any maintenance. however the oil pump was changed at around the 410k mark as it was taking a while for the oil light to go out after starting. the engine had some oil leaks from the rocker cover gasket and the turbo core was changed at 300k miles, the alternator had to be replaced twice and the in tank lift pump also twice and it needed 4 clutches. apparently the engine was never off. as soon as someone's shift was over it another person jumped in the seat to take over.
this does show the theory of cold cycles does kill an engine quicker but it also does show that they are rather good engines.
the reason why it was scrapped was because of rust.
seriously, you should have seen the service history it had. it was as thick as a "mans guide to understanding women" book.... hard back.
ohh i did that on mine once when i had it up on axle stands looking for the cause of a vibration. it was a wheel balance issue.. not driveshaft like i thought it was.
it looks like a standard relay from the photo. my guess is that it turns on with the blowers.. takes its signal feed from that as the blowers only turn on when the engine is running
so i never took them photos and totally changed my 24v system. now i have a 12v system as i needed the 24v system for.. "other projects".
still gone with having 2x gel or AGM style batteries as lithium is just insane in cost. not yet bought them.. the system runs off the main starting battery for now.. i know risky.
and to add to the risk, the alternator decided to release all its magic smoke. now i cant put that back in as it belongs to the sky now, but i could replace the blown diodes. i could also swap out the original 90 amp alternator.... for a 180 amp alternator... hmm 180 amps.. take away say 30 amps for the ECU and running of the engine and a bit more for lights and other stuff say another 30 amps.. that give me like 120 amps.. to play with! thats a lot of amps! i like amps.
so to compensate with having no alternator for the past 3 weeks i just ziptied 2x 150w solar panels to the roof rack and thats been keeping the battery at 14.3v all the time the sun it out. nice.
its been working great!
i have also finally installed my full 8 camera 24hr cctv system to the van.. mounted to plates on the roof rack. it has a rather large hard drive and a sim card which constantly uploads to the NAS at home via the internet. (well only the last 4 hours of footage, the whole drive then gets backed up though wifi when parked up back home)
i have a nice monitor in line with where the rear view mirror would go but above the windscreen (as i dont have the top plastic shelf which would get in the way) which is great as one of the cameras is a look down camera when backing up.. something that i never really struggled with but i tell you, im all for being more lazy!
the camera system is that good, you could have the windscreen totally covered and easily drive using just the monitor.. if it was a little bigger..
i will also have a monitor in the back too so at night i will be able to see any "undesirables" around my van. oh and as for night time visibility, i have also added some 940nm IR lighting to the van.. totally invisible you cant even see a red glow like on some IR lighting. it lights around the van nicely on the cameras.
i have also bought a retractable awning too which i will fit to the right hand side of the van i think.. i never use the left hand side sliding door.. 2.5m long and pulls out 2.3m its self supporting too! no legs or needing to tie it to something.
the aim is to still keep it looking stealth.. the solar panels may be a give away however but the awning is being built into one of those pipe tube carrier things that plumbers love to have on roofs of vans. it will just be cut along its length and hinged so it opens up all the way along.
i have also finally got my roof lining in the back. using 3 or 4mm ply board cut to size. i then vinyl wrapped it with this cool green matrix effect reflective iridescent wrap. looks good.
i need to add a fan and pollen filter to the space i made above the roof lining. yes its needed. i require my pollen free air.
i replaced my dead diesel heater.. i used it that much the fan brushes wore out. now have a new one.. they have changed the controller and now it heats up like within 3 to 5 mins! its amazing. the old one was like a good quarter of an hour till it was blowing warm air. also made the decision to never use red diesel again in it. (yes i know you should not anyway but i own a woodland so i get an exemption
) the red diesel would gell up and block the pipes so i would have to flush it through with petrol to clear the lines. quite annoying. from now on its home heating oil/diesel number 1 or just cheap road diesel.
ok thats about it i guess. still not got the cruise control working.. ive not even looked at it yet to change the wiring around.. everything else is pretty good.
dont ask how i blew the alternator... hmm.. lets just say that you can create a chrona on an antenna if you have enough power.
yeah ive had heater matrixes that clogged up with "head gasket fix" and all the oil in coolant that goes with a blown head gasket the thing had no flow at all through it.
my fix was to do what you did.. but use pure petrol. that removed pretty much all of the oil. and the best thing with petrol is it just evaporates away leaving no trace.. given you rig up an air line blowing through it for an hour or so. (till the petrol smell goes away).
i cant say it will do the seals much good, but a life of living with oil over them over a few minutes of having petrol over them has to be better.
heaters never worked so good after! got fll flow back. i ended up flushing the rest of the engine with neat petrol too. cleaned it right up.
i have also used dish washer tablets in the past too. in the summer drained all coolant and flushed a few times with water, then filled it up with water and dropped a few ground up dish washer tablets in the header tank.. driven it around for a few hours or to work and back a few times then drained the water and flushed loads of times. the crap that came out on the first drain was nuts!
if it dropped behind the clocks through the gaps it will be on top of the steering column support. it should rattle its way out.. take a few corners harder than you normally would. dont wear flip flops.. not fun when that lands on your toenail end on.
dont ask me how i know.
taxis use those wind deflectors.. only issue is they are yellow! i bet youll have a taxi breaker within a few miles
i hate to say it but you need to spin the pump up as fast as it will go.. and the only way to do that is to give it an MOT style red line test. i do do it to my van every so often just to keep the engine clear, i remember after i did it with mine the low coolant light came on, i thought i blew a hose but it was an air bubble somewhere that the high flow pushed out. i backed this theory up as i heard "air in a water pipe" sounds under the dash when i gave it the beans as it were.
im not really a fan of screaming engines but this did work for me.. just dont do it if you suspect your cam belt is old.
