This reminds me of when, after a year or so of not working at all, my fan came on suddenly at full blast while driving through Glasgow and I got showered with with debris and dead flies!

Had to pull over and sort it out. What a mess!

I did eventually take the blower out and replaced the resistor. Such a joy to have warm air on tap again!

I hate to think whats in mine when I take it out for (hopefully a quick lube of the bearings) sounds like minced mice!

Hi MRE, this post is what prompted me to have a go changing the fan. Great work on the link you provided, exactly what people need as there are no manuals for the Dispatch as far as I know! Thanks for posting it.

#53 Re: Maintenance » Heater blower » 2020-01-18 22:00:55

I had recently the same problem, intermittent working of the fan blower (the fan is very squeaky every now and then) which would just shut down on any setting of the slider and then come back. last week it packed up totally. Today looking through these posts I thought I would try to remove the fan its self, thinking the squeaking sound means it needs replacing and is the fault for stopping working, so looking behind the glove box to see what tools I needed for the job, there was a green relay hanging down out of its mount, reattached it and pushed the relay to make sure it was still connected. .   started the van to drive to my workshop and the bast*rd started working! I had no idea this relay was anything to do with the system, checking through it is! I would suggest changing this relay before doing anything else as cheap starter diagnosis elimination before pulling everything apart!. The fan now works from off and all through the full range of the slider. Hope this helps.

PS the relay is to the bottom right of the fuse box behind the glove box

Thanks Happy Camper

The one on mine is rated far lower. I will have a look around now for the spec you gave. Much appreciated

Hi all, Merry Christmas to you.

Ok, took the van to Littlehampton to see the folks for Xmas, not started it for 3 days and this morning, the battery was flat. The only drain on it is the flashing little red light on the dash for the immobiliser.

Jumped it with my fathers mobile battery jump pack thing, fired up instantly, so happy with that.

Ummm now, looking at Halfords for batteries seem rather expensive and shite reviews too of their own. Anyone know what is the original spec (or better) for a 2002 2.0Hdi van and where to get one?

(PS I have a new alternator and kicks out a punch so thats charging no problem, also the battery looks like it was from a torch rather than a van!)

It just meant that so much was on National route (A roads) our speed was usually 50-55 mph and 60-65mph on dual carriageway..........

I was in something of disbelief (what with holiday sh** etc) when fuelling up just outside of Clermont-Ferrand we had returnd 57MPG...................

The pug's fitted with a DW8  and at the time had about 178,000mls on her .............

We'd fueled up in Adinkerke, Belgium (Fags etc inc) covered about IIRC 500mls and put in about 39 ltrs .....
I Remember having way over a quarter tank still showing before hand and at that rate would have managed 700 miles to the tank............

But from there on the (A75) Motorway (hilly) a Momentous storm {South}  and all the way back we'd  returned to the usual 49 ..50 mpg  .............

Even to this day (and on retirement duties) with over 211,000 it still manages about 600 miles to a tank....
I'm Happy with that .... Very............
(This is where Van kicks in not having to find accommodation or incur cost on route and convenience of stopping when tired or a cuppa)

Although to be fair on the first trip we took 306 to Spain  to visit Her father. (Atlantic coast then med..... 4,500 miles in just shy of 4 weeks).........
It did so much better than the fuel budget prediction.. We were able to have an extra W/end of accommodation and still buy Some extra Sh** at Adinkerke on way home
{In one 12 month period we did 3 Spanish trips [Costa Brava] with it }

Wow, 57 mpg? I am due to travel to Spain early next year to take tools/furniture etc to renovate my girlfriends parents flat in Torremollinos as they are too unwell to use it any more. I was thinking about the mpg versus the cost of freight. The ideal would be to have the van there to do the dump runs of the sh*t tiles and 70's carpet etc, and to collect from the nearby diy stores for materials. I guess it will be around £180 in fuel to get there with the weight on the van and same back, which is far cheaper compared to freight and the hire of a van down there.

Is there any requirements to drive through France/Spain that I should do before leaving?

A good old fasioned problem with an easy solution.  I wonder what OBD would make of that?  Bet there is no grease nipple though.  wink

Cheers for letting us know, must do mine as it does seem to be a bit notchty one way.

Hi OAT, yeah, no grease nipple, he had to pierce the rubber boot to get the grease in and seal it wit tape. I can now turn the wheel with one finger. He asaid to come back for the rubber boot change as they are not easy to find

I can't ask you do the trip to the tip finding one smile I will check out the web link. As much as I like driving the van, my cd collection is just Pink Floyd and getting depressed listening to the wall for the 20th time!

I presume access is via removing the interior light?

Hi, anyone recommend where I can find a good aerial replacement for this? The car wash wasn't a good success! An original would be good but a decent replacement with the right mount and connector would do.

Thanks

Hi all

I left my lights on last night after turning the engine off and (thankfully the battery wasn't flat this morning!" Is there a buzzer or beeper on these vans? if so where is it and where is the fuse. Also the cab light doesn't come on with opening and closing the door, same system? I am guessing the whole thing is linked. Help welcome. 2.0HDI 2002 reg

Hi Vaz, I wonder a quick call to the AA may shed some light on this, they will know the DVLA regs etc well?

#67 Re: Camper Conversions » DVLA says my van doesn't look like a camper from the outside » 2019-09-14 00:48:09

I have not looked into the insurance yet, pretty sure they will not go against DVLA, I wonder if it maybe worth while contacting a online club of van/camper conversions and see what they have to say. Just because it's a small van, surely doesn't mean it's not convertible to other use?

I've been looking a little more at this Subject as I'm Considering a change { Have done for couple years now}...................
It seems from what I've read is for whatever reason that virtually every applicant since May this year has been refused on the grounds of "Does not look like a Motorhome/Motor Caravan"...............
As it has been pointed out here there is Some form of unknown motovation behind this and it is disgraceful that vehicles built accordingly to their own minimum guidelines Nevermind those that exceed those proposed to be summarily refused .......................

Q: If a vehicle is built as a "Campervan" too or exceeding these guidlines and is refused a change of classification/categorization based solely on appearance.............
Does that Mean for insurance purposes it cannot be insured as A Motorhome  but should as a van with Several Modifications ?

Hi again, I can see no reason why any why any vehicle cannot be reclassified. I have looked at DVLA and the website is as confusing as is their agenda of ruling. As I understand, ANY vehicle can be modified, adjusted or changed within the guidelines of road legality. Take Top Gear for example, they did it all the time. There is no basis for a vehicle NOT to be modified etc, the chassis and initial testing of it is done through manufacture, you have not altered any structural integrity etc, only use and interior. I would suggest asking them to send you the definition of "Motorhome/Motor Caravan" according to their legislation. I feel for you here as this is just complete and utter nonsense from them.

I lived in E. Sussex for nigh on 15 years before returning back up here and my usual service bill about 10.. 12 yrs ago would have been close to half as much again .......
So I'd be inclined to get half decent pattern parts {most are Pattern} and see if your man that did your welding is interested in fitting them for you............

These vans are usually fairly rot free for their ages although seen a few with the blistering sills and nearly always older than mine hence the standing about theory.....
I was surprised at the sills but wonder if drainage holes were blocked or non existant as it was mentioned  they didn't recall seeing any

Thanks for the reply Vaz, thinking about just getting the patched sill replaced, a previous owner put a big crease along it anyway, so looks a bit shabby. £200 sounds very good!

Hi Ken, I finally caught up with my neighbour regarding his conversions. He said he had no problem this time regarding the minibus to camper, but has in the past, finding sending extra pictures showing the outside of the vehicle with the interior visible. he did say they can be arsey! Also of note, NO external changes made on either of his conversions, they are just being jobsworths!

#71 Re: Camper Conversions » DVLA says my van doesn't look like a camper from the outside » 2019-08-30 17:36:31

Hi, he converted it three months ago, the only external thing is a wood burner chimney! Not sure if he has imformed DVLA but he is fastidious so think he would have done

#72 Re: Camper Conversions » DVLA says my van doesn't look like a camper from the outside » 2019-08-30 17:22:09

Hi Ken, I have a neighbour that converted a long wheelbase transit low roof minibus into a full camper inside, externally he did nothing. I will ask him about this with DVLA (notorious arsey organisation!) I will get back to you. I am suprised you need to change the exterior to qualify it as a motor caravan!

Sills: I suffered blistering on mine which I originally thought was down to standing about a lot doing very little and as you pointed out was under the sealent near the rearmost part...........
When showen what was happening I opted to fit New sills..........
To be informed it appeared to be coming from the inside out........

As for notchy steering that coul be as simple as a new belt or fluid change.......... but also sounds a bit like a weak pump (Good used out breakers would do)

Hi vaz, you are making me think about getting the sills replace from what you have said. Do you have a cost of the work? This van is so rust free mostly that if it's just a couple of hundred each to keep it on the road for the next few years, I am happy to get this done

It is smile I did manage to have a good look round underneath when on the ramp at the MOT centre, rear left bumper frame is a bit rusty (will sort that easy) and the rest is fantastic, £750 van and under £300 to get through the mot, cheap as, very happy
