Luxemburg beer is cheaper BTW

Might be cheaper, probably not as tasty.  I'm kinda set in my ways, I like abbey beers, dubbels and trippels ideally, at least 9% if possible, although i do drink a lot of Leffe  and Duvel over here.

Was after about 12 bottles of the Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel which has a pretty divine taste.  Haven't had any for about 3 years and its nigh on impossible to get hold of over here.  Don't mind paying for the bottles as I love the taste of it.

I'm not bothered about Covid, it will never fully go away.  Quadruple jabbed (Astra, Pfizer and Moderna) and have a vaccine passport.  But this year i want to do some minor trekking over here.  Trans-Pennine, Coast to Coast and maybe the Pennine Way.  Although I have mulled over walking to Cleethorpes and then down the coast path to Harwich.  Next summer I will be heading abroad for sure.

Something useful.  I don't think anyone had posted anything that useful in a while.  I never put two and two together. hmm  And I didn't even link you to it, not that i even realised your were on there at that time.

I actually went back and looked you up and realised I had posted on a handful of threads that you also posted on and then it clicked.  I think at that time I was still running my Transit and hadn't discovered this place yet.  Did you ever post the swivel seats blog over there?

Small world.

Yeah no interest in using AF, especially after DYD clued me into A-Plan.  They were just better and less hassle.  Seems to be a lot of issues with Adrian Flux, not to mention the agreed value clause.  A-Plan just asked me how much it was worth and said if I added anything else to the van to send them an email.  Agreed value was just done without hassle.  Also, I did get a 10% discount with A-Plan for being a member of SBMCC.

Cant remember but I think I have the same as you for Euro cover, 90 days.  I don't see me using it this year.  Maybe next year.

#104 Re: Camper Conversions » Small sliding windows » 2022-03-01 04:08:25

In this country the windows are mostly moot.  Abroad it's a different situation when its 26C at 2am and you need that air flow.

What i ideally want is some really small windows.  Big enough to get airflow, small enough you cant get robbed easily.  My van isn't very stealth in the grand scheme of things.  It has a fixed frame solar panel for one.  But it works for me, for now.

#105 Re: Camper Conversions » Camper insurance » 2022-03-01 03:47:57

A-Plan for mine.

Got it cheaper than the Adrian Flux quote with less jumping through hoops and let me use my NCB from another policy I had.  Cost a bit more than most of your quotes, but I asked for a lot of miles for the year.  Also no need to submit a million receipts to get accepted value or whatever they call it.  I just send pics of it when it's finished (some day). smile

#106 Re: Camper Conversions » Diesel Heater positions » 2022-02-28 21:19:39

I'd rather have the knob version.  The more analogue, the better.  Less electronics to break down.

OAT wrote:

Anyone know how thick the supplied tanks are?

I think the same as most fuel cans.  Just be aware they have a tendency to leak if you use the valve at the bottom.  I've seen a handful of youtube vids where the tanks have leaked and been replaced with fuel cans or jerry cans using sender pipes to allow fuel to be drawn from the top of the can, instead of the bottom.  Or I guess you could install a sender pipe to the top of the fuel tank instead of putting the one supplied through the bottom.

My own system will use a 5L fuel can as opposed to the 10L or 15L tank that comes with the heater.

#107 Re: Maintenance » dispatch battery 1.9 2009 » 2022-02-28 21:07:03

Maybe a better alternator that is capable of throwing more amps into the battery.  Is the alternator producing enough power to charge the battery?  You shouldn't really have an issue if you drive for 30 mins, then stop, rinse/repeat.  Best thing to do is put a multimeter on the battery first thing before you start it up and record the reading, do the same again after you get to your first job and record, then do it again before you set off to your second job, etc.  Compare to the table below to get what state the battery is in.  Maybe put the battery on charge overnight as well, then do a reading on it in the morning after leaving it for 20 mins to settle.  It should be 100% or near enough.  If it isn't, then send the battery back (if it's new).  If it isn't new then maybe replace it.

Battery-state-of-charge-for-Wet-and-AGM-400x311.png

The battery required for a 2.0 HDi is a 70ah.  I would assume it's the same for the 1.9.  You can check it on euro car parts.

It's also possible you have a parasitic drain somewhere on the electrical system.  Maybe a short or bad wiring.  If you take readings with a multimeter over a day while not using the van, the voltage should stay fairly constant.  If it isn't (and starts dropping), then you probably have something draining power.  Then it's a real clusterfuck trying to trace it.

#108 Re: Camper Conversions » Diesel Heater positions » 2022-02-27 20:49:38

I looked at the Vevor heaters, but the one that comes with the knob control by default is the 5kw (and its also considerably cheaper than the 2kw).

mini_diesel-heater-m100-1_2.jpeg

Vevor 12V 2/3/4/8KW Diesel Heater @ eBay

I have to say I am tempted to go with the overkill 5kw and if needed just leave the roof spinny vent open to keep some air flow in place.  5kw for £90 vs 2kw for £105.  I would rather save the £15 and use it for something else.

The wondering about exhaust gases was similar to what you said Casper regarding fumes in an awning.  One of my big upgrades this year will be an awning, so I can extend my living space outwards when I setup a base for a couple of days.  On the off chance it's cold, it would be nice to heat it via the diesel heater (or at least get the temp to something more ambient).  For that larger space, a 5kw would be a better option.

So feel free to call me an idiot, but these vans all use the same parts, or at least thats what I understood.  A Citroen Dispatch part can be used on a Peugeot Expert or a Fiat Scudo?  So if that holds true, why couldn't you use say one of these?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333629815759
or
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/363025805149

Both look to be the same part, but better price tag.  Or are you only looking for genuine Fiat parts?  Even if the pattern parts only last 6 months, it would still be better value than a £600 part.

My suggestion would be to buy one, see if it fits, if it doesn't return.  Its a hassle way of doing things, but if it fits, you got it for £40.

If JohnDragonMan comes on, he might know.

#110 Re: Camper Conversions » Diesel Heater positions » 2022-02-25 15:36:40

I meant from the diesel heater?  But i'll take it you routed the exhaust/muffler away from the drop out vent.

#111 Re: Camper Conversions » Diesel Heater positions » 2022-02-24 22:10:55

Ken, do you get any exhaust gas blow back from using the drop out vent?

#112 Re: Camper Conversions » Small sliding windows » 2022-02-24 21:12:23

I did at one time consider those rectangular portholes on my last van.  They might work on this van just as well.  Enough space to get some airflow, but not enough that someone can get their hand through.

mini_rectangular-porthole.jpg

If not, that sliding window you linked would be good.

Need to think on it a bit. smile

Does anyone know if it's possible to get smaller sliding windows than these?  These ones are 750 x 240, which isn't the worst, but if I could get slightly smaller it would be nice.  Look for ideally under 750, maybe 600-700mm in length.

I am looking to put one or two on the back side panels, high up to give me a bit of airflow, while maintaining privacy.  Something like this.

mini_Peugeot_Expert_Window_Placement.jpeg

One problem I see is a massive strut that runs down the inside of that panel in the middle.  It doesn't look structural but i'm still hesitant on whether to cut through it.  Is it ok to cut it?

#114 Re: Maintenance » Weird issue when turning right » 2022-02-23 16:08:07

Well it went for MOT and it failed.  As if it was going to pass. big_smile

Failed on nearside Front Suspension and track rod end.  So I guess that explains the diving when cornering.  I told the garage to fix it.  I have no interest in doing that particular job.  Price wasn't bad and it saves me time.  It's going back in next week for the back brakes.

Next jobs for me to do include the exhaust hanger doughnut and the LP hose for the power steering.  Future jobs include the fked gearbox and I still havent done the gear stick linkage cables yet.  Oh and that bloody airbag light which for whatever reason didn't come on when the MOT got done.  Still I hope to get my solar upgrade done soon (join two 100w panels together to make 200w) and also looking into rock n roll beds as I worry about all the weight being on one side of the van.

#115 Re: Maintenance » Weird issue when turning right » 2022-02-19 02:28:42

Cheers for the ideas.  I also considered the tracking might be out on the nearside wheel, so when I am turning so much one side is turning more, causing that instability.

I'm afraid the ball joint could be the issue, it's not been well cared for in the past before I bought it.  Going to do the front brakes next week, so will have a look at the ball joint then.  Failing that it's in for MOT next week so it might get highlighted then.

I do have a clonk of sorts but not while turning and not on the front of the van.  I think that is a different problem and at a guess is the exhaust pipe hanger rubbers being substandard.  I have new ones to fit.

I noticed this issue a month back.

When I go around a roundabout at certain speeds, ie, over 15-20mph, the van will dive on the nearside in a weird disconcerting way and it feels like the van is trying to roll over.  Is this an anti roll bar issue?  Or is it more likely to be the shocks?

I suspect some of the problem is due to the interior camper weight being mostly on that side of the van, so it is more likely to dive when turning right, as the van leans more.

I am currently wondering whether to scrap the bed in the back and move to a rock and roll bed to try and distribute the weight more evenly.  At present I have about 150-200kg of weight just on the right side.

#117 Re: Maintenance » Hydraulic steering pipe (FIAT Scudo 2004 2.0 JTD SX). » 2022-02-17 10:50:19

Mine has pretty much the same problem as everyone else.  I generally top the fluid up once a month.  When I first got the van, the steering would whir when turning, until i topped the reservoir back up.  But it's been getting gradually worse, so time to try and fix it I guess.  MOT due next week, I don't see it passing, so might have to mothball the van for a couple of weeks.

Casper, I believe under EU rules, most restaurants have to cater for GF customers and it has to be well documented/visible on their menus, so I don't think you will have any issues.  Just let them know you are GF when you go or book.  The rules around food allergies are much better in the EU than over here.  As ever, YMMV.

I don't even attempt to eat out anymore with my nut allergy as I spend far too much time sat in Hospital Resus areas when I've done so in the past.  Better to eat bland food and not die, than the alternative. big_smile

You think its bad having a gun pulled on you in Belgium, try having the same over here at 2am on a dark street, after getting pulled over because your back reg plate has a small amount of moss between the pieces of plastic.  I wasn't scared, but I was a bit like WTF and I even said to the cop I was talking to, that his mate was being a bit ambitious getting his MP5 ready and crouching in the door, for a traffic stop.  Apparently they'd just been patrolling in an area where someone took a pot shot at them the week before, which wasn't the area they stopped me in.

Then coming back from Bruges on the aforementioned boat, back in Dec 2019, as a foot passenger.  When we got to Hull Customs, it was like they were expecting ISIS or something.  Never seen so many people armed with assault rifles in such a small space since the customs area at the airport we flew into in Cuba.  There were 18 cops, armed to the teeth in full tactical gear, with assault rifles and a shit ton of extra clips.  Don't know what they were expecting, but what they got was a bunch of bemused holidaymakers who'd been on a booze cruise to Belgium as a Christmas treat.  It was seriously like they were expecting an invasion.  I could understand 3 or 4 maybe, but 18 was fucking overkill.  I mean would you get in the face of 1 guy with an assault rifle, let alone that many.  Then I got the third degree about why I'd gone to Belgium.  She wasn't impressed at my answer, to go to the half moon brewery, enjoy a brewery tour and then get thoroughly twatted for the rest of the day.  I mean isn't that why you go on a booze cruise to Belgium as a foot passenger?  I felt like saying, what the fuck does it matter why I went to Belgium.  Maybe the 18 armed cops were there so she could give everyone grief for having fun while she sat running customs.

@tee_cee, 14L is 20 bottles and 20 bottles is a lot when you don't drink wine.  I only buy sweet whites like Monbaz, Sauternes or Moscatel.  I prefer beer mostly, especially decent abbey beers and anything with a good percentage and taste.

I didn't think the DFDS Newcastle to Denmark ship ran anymore?  They only run to Amsterdam AFAIK.  Nor does the Harwich to Esjberg route, that used to be an alternative.

#121 Re: Camper Conversions » New French Laws » 2022-02-04 05:41:28

I'm after a few bottles of Monbazillac and a bunch of Straffe Hendrik's Trippel beer.  90 litres of that beer would equate to being shitfaced for at least a month. big_smile

As for drugs, not really a thing for me.  Might be tempted to sample some truffles while there, but its not as important as the beer. tongue

#123 Re: Camper Conversions » New French Laws » 2022-02-03 17:25:01

Everyone I know has had issues with the plod over there.  I hate travelling in or through the country and would happily pay the extra cash to get a ferry to Bilbao or Santander to avoid driving there.  Unfortunately i might have to drive through it this summer, briefly, to get into Belgium, but such is life I guess.  Although i am toying with the idea of hopping into Holland on the Hull boat and then heading south into Belgium.  Don't know where I will go after that.  If I do go I am only planning on a short trip of maybe a week.  Just a beer/wine run and some R&R.

#124 Re: Camper Conversions » New French Laws » 2022-02-01 22:05:23

That's France for you.  If it's not broken, lets try harder to fuck it up.  Not that I tend to go near the big cities if I can help it, especially Paris.  If I wanted to visit a large shit hole, London is a lot nearer.  Supermarkets are often out of the cities and fuel is easily available all over.  Even the speed limits don't make a lot of difference to me.  49 vs 55 is a largely irrelevant number.  Technically if you don't have camper van tags on your V5 its the same speed over here on single carriage roads.

If you want to visit a city, get a bike and cycle in or walk or get a bus.  Even in terms of Aires, I prefer the quieter ones in the villages over the big city ones.  Clean air and all that.

For me France is somewhere I sometimes pass through on the way to somewhere better. wink

Anyway thanks for posting tee_cee.  it's good info.
