Hi guys
Newbie here and have a question, I've recently bought a Mk2 Peugeot Expert Teepee which has been converted into a camper and really happy with it but have noticed that when on high beam the dip beam is extinguished leaving it total dark in front of the vehicle and only the road in the distance illuminated is this right? I know they are H4 double filament bulbs but thinking back to the days when I've had cars with H4's I can't remember this happening.
Any help and advise will be appreciated.

Huh, I have that but only because I robbed the headlights from my Synergie. Will be watching this thread closely
Here were my findings:

hey there, so this is by design of the light. the van uses a H4 type halogen bulb with 2 internal filaments. the bulb has a natural flaw where if both filaments are being used at the same time the bulb overheats. the bulb its self may be fine, however the plastic headlight may not take too kindly to the extra heat.
i came from the old style Fiat Panda 4x4 before i had this van of mine. that also used the older style twin filament bulb (called a R2/410/P45). that also had the same system where when you went to high beam the dipped would turn off.
i can recommend a bit of an upgrade which surprisingly is not that hard to do...
looks good.. but the light output is even better.
its a H1 projector lens upgrade
you need this to do it
the 2x projector lens:

the conversion harness:

and here is a video i made of how to do it..
fitting the projector lens into the headlight:

removing and replacing the headlights on the van:

ill try to get some night time shots. its impressive for saying i am just using standard H1 bulbs.

Notice: I have the tendency to void warranties, blow fuses, cause fires, and other fun stuff.
Words of wisdom: Internally rust proof the sills and subframe! both skins!!. There's always user serviceable parts inside. "Oh that shouldn't have happened".

just to confirm what @JohnDragonMan said, I've just ventured outside to check the voltage at the headlight bulb, and when the main beam is on the dip switches off.
Online
I have a Mk2 Dispatch When you switch to main beam dip turns off checked with voltmeter. I haven't noticed any lack of illumination though, perhaps your headlights are set to high, have you tried the adjustment wheel within the cab lefthand side of the steering wheel on the lower dash

Thanks Guys, my Daughter has a car with H4 headlamps and it doesn't go dark at all when hi beam is on.
hand a look today and I don't think the bulbs are in correctly, I would post pictures but not sure how but from looking through the lens i can see bulbs are rotated around 5 degrees off, I assume they should be vertical?
EDIT pictures now below, is this bulb in the right way round?

Hi Guys, yes the bulbs are fitted ok I had a sneaky look at the taxi’s outside of Tesco and they are also offset like mine. So thinking they are what they are, if I do end up driving much in the dark I’ll have to fit some driving lamps.
But for now it will have to stay how they are.
Thanks again for your input.
