Alternator charging

Hi, I mentioned this a while ago.
To get the van charging I have to rev her up a bit, the ignition light isnt working but the heater motor doesn't work either unless I rev her up. You can hear a relay kick in when I rev her and everything is fine after this.
Any thoughts??
Cheers

Re: Alternator charging

hmm an alternator usually stops charging if the battery light has blown.. or been replaced with an LED, or the wire going to the light from the alternator has been cut. it needs that bit of load to excite the windings in the alternator.
it can happen where they become self exciting if the alternator is old and armature has become slightly magnetic.

Yea I had exactly this. The sensor wire from the alternator - the thin one - had broken. I replaced it and everything was fixed.

It's probably the same reason as JohnDragonMan's explanation too, since I think they're the same wire.
