2004 1.9D 5 speed box - Speed sensor intermittent

Yes, it's still on the road and just passed another MOT, I love my Mk1.

So my issue is the speedo drops to zero once a day or so for a few mins, then pops back to normal. I have managed using a scanner to verify that the signal drops out, so this (I believe) rules out that the instrument cluster to be at fault.  This in my logic leaves the sensor or the wiring to be the suspects. I cannot find the location of the speed sensor! if anybody can guide me to the general location, I'd be most grateful.

I had this on mine for a good year before it completely conked out. I haven't tried another instrument cluster yet, I'd be interested to see your findings. I'm using a GPS speedo for now which does the job

Is the scanner a normal OBD one?

Mine has done this perhaps a dozen times in 5-6 years that I have noticed.  Usually when I check back a minute or so later it's going again.  Hard to say with it being so random and rare but I suspect it comes back after hitting a bump or two.  Never investigated as it's gone when I stop but always thought it to be mechanical rather than electrical.

Not sure how mine works, but I suspect simpler than later ones with ecu's.

I thought the speedo was cable driven. Im sure my Expert was but never needed to strip it on my Dispatch. Saying that i could be getting mixed up with the 306 as i was forever taking that out changing bulbs

In all of my "Eurovan" vehicles - including the earlier Synergie/806 setups - it's been electronic signals. Different electrical connections between the eras, but never any cable driven ones

Interesting. My Expert was a 99/2000 model where the Dispatch was 04. Would that make a difference?? Probably thinking my 306's then

My only data points are my 1996 Synergie, 1998 806, 1999 Dispatch and 2000.

The Synergie/806 both have printed circuit board connections around the edge of the binnacle, much more old fashioned

My two Dispatches have the two Blue/Yellow plugs with a grid of pins that slot in

No spinning cable on any of them though, only electrical connections
