End of the Road!

Failed MOT on subframe.

Probably the end of the road.

Same, my old girl is ticking up to MOT, but told last time already, it was the last tick she's had.

Your avatar has never been more appropriate.   hmm

Looking around, I will be lucky to afford a moped.

Still, I did once do a 350 mile tour of Scotland on a 50cc Yamaha.

Life goes on.

If you was to meet me, you'd be surprised how fitting it is, since getting caught with this pesky cough thingy-I literally 1 to 2 copy... Or other way round- Jeff Albertson is copy of me

Got to say, I'm selling my 5008 too, soon I'll be car/van'less, just to cover gazzilions I've spent on hers repairs

If not MOT ("their" problem), she'd be running as good as bicycle for years more to come. I've never had more reliable vehicle in my life, including Hondas, Toyota's I've had.
Not looking forward to it.
Yeah, Road Tax rip off, yeah she's been thirsty on fuel, gutless etc, but she served me like nothing else ever!
Looking at garbage MK2 onwards is, struggling to think what to get to not to end up in money pit.

Let us know, when you are on a moped wink

Can get one for £350 but garage not interested.  Like you I would be prepared to pay more than the van is worth to get another couple of years.

Alister recons he could patch it but he hasn't seen it yet and I was under the impression that welding wasn't allowed on subframes.

Re: End of the Road!

Oh that sounds easily solvable. £350 + labour is gonna be well cheaper than a replacement, well... anything these days

That said, if the subframe hasn't been removed for 25 years, I can imagine it's not a case of unbolt and rebolt.

Just a case of finding someone willing to do a crappy job

Re: End of the Road!

i live by what i have put in my signature. subframes are doable.. its just them 4 rear bolts under the footwells. i'd ask a taxi place.. they repaired theses things constantly and will know all the tricks to do the job.

Words of wisdom: Internally rust proof the sills and subframe! both skins!!. There's always user serviceable parts inside. "Oh that shouldn't have happened".

Re: End of the Road!

Apparently the loosely defined regs re welding subframes allows for a degree of interpretation by tester.
I think I may have found a good welder and a "reasonable" MOT station to do mine.

It's the main structure supporting the whole front end.
Engine, wheels, and suspension all hang off it.
So...quite important.  smile

From  the other thread:

OAT wrote:

The parts situation with these vans is ridiculous.  One of the reasons my local garage won't do the subframe is they expect it won't be the right one when it comes and they would be a ramp down with my van in bits till they found the correct one.

I remember helping someone out years ago with a Dispatch needing a subframe and they had exactly this problem - there's about 5 different subframes, all with different notches and dips

Wish I could find the screenshots now

Re: End of the Road!

i know if it was mine, id weld it then grind it back smooth so its not noticable.  id then make sure i rust proofed it internally wink

Fingers crossed. Is it due to being Sub frame rather than Chassis that you cant weld or a fussy dick for an MOT man??? I can weld my Chassis if need be and thankfully 21 years on its still solid but when/if the time comes my hobby mig is coming out.

I think the regs are open to interpretation.  Something like " repairs must be equal to original".  There is argument as to the "equal" relating to strength, or method of construction/repair.  Many mot stations stay out of it and say no.  This is all from non legal hearsay though.  I suppose it might take a court case to decide.

Ouch!
That looks like a lot of work to get anywhere near acceptable for MOT state. sad

That's if you got someone capable to sort it out for you.

Condolences! ?

Re: End of the Road!

Got a new one coming.

Can't understand how same garage passed it last couple of years.  That hasn't happened in just 12 months!

The result of spending so much time parked on grass I think.  Scary how weakened it is.  There are stress fractures running from each hole, could have collapsed anytime.  And I do often take it off road.  Once watched a landy club convoy turn back from one track I use.

Re: End of the Road!

RE welding
IIRC if you plate it with  tack/birdshit welding it will probably fail
but a decent seam weld not hidden by thick black underseal has a better chance of
passing inspection.

Re: End of the Road!

Same here, rotten front suspension subframe - I ordered & received within 5 day from HAWK £274 delivered, my garage who deals with heavy vehicles is going to fit it next Tuesday
