Dispatch 1.9TD for spares (24k engine, subframe) or repair

2000 Dispatch 1.9TD dark blue - took it in for an early pre-MOT check today, as I really needed to be sure it would get through next month due to an impending house move from Scotland down to Manchester, although the MOT doesn’t actually expire until 12 March.  Sadly it’s not going to pass without considerable welding and this is probably going to be the end of the road.  The welding and an exhaust rubber are the only things that would have been required for a new MOT at the moment.

It’s had a lot spent to get it this far and I’m wondering if anyone is interested in buying it in particular for the engine and/or front subframe.  The van has covered around 94k and runs perfectly, but the engine was replaced with a Citroen exchange unit at around 70k, so this one has done only 24k since then.  The turbo was replaced at the same time, having been responsible for the original engine failure.

The front subframe was replaced around 6 or 7 years ago with a brand new one which I think was one of the last available from Citroen, so there should be plenty of life left in that if anybody needs a good used one.

I still need the van for a couple of trips between Helensburgh and Manchester over the coming month, so not looking to let it go immediately, but if anyone would like to see it or discuss it please get in touch.  I’ve known the van since it was new as it was originally purchased by a friend (now deceased)

I’m not in a position to break the van myself, so would only sell it as a complete vehicle.

Re: Dispatch 1.9TD for spares (24k engine, subframe) or repair

Sill i would do. Extremities of both corners inboard of the rear bumper? < Is that all the rear corner what the bumper his hiding and attached to? Probably do that myself also But Jacking points has me spooked. Is there extra support rotted away/needed.

Im after a cheap van for work and this would have been ideal. Unfortunately your two locations is a tad far for just a casual viewing.

I’ll email details and pictures later this morning.
I’m told that the jacking points are relatively straightforward to fix and probably the easiest of the affected areas to deal with.

Wouldn't mind some pictures posted on here. I'm mostly around Bradford but sometimes drive to Preston.

A 24k XUD9 with similarly aged turbo seems tempting. Depends if I can be arsed moving all my camper conversion across!

Happy to post pictures but after uploading them I’m unsure how to proceed as the insert function doesn’t seem to do anything.  Alternatively I can email them.  The corrosion is fairly daunting though!  I’ll be in Manchester with the van from tomorrow until Wednesday morning.

I will upload the ones you sent me if you want. You bothered about the numberplate showing?

18 mentions of "corroded" in its MOT history! Has it been washed with salt water or something?

I'd be up for a look though. I'm down in Somerset atm, will be driving up to Bradford on Sunday so would be coming past Manchester. Where abouts are you?

Depending on how I get on with times I could swing by. Would be later on though - 8 - 10pm onwards if that's not too late - my DW8 can only go so fast!

Lol! I haven’t counted but a bit of duplication surely to get to 18?!  This evening should be fine, probably best if you email me and I’ll get back to you or give you a call this afternoon once I arrive.  dispatch@skipport.co.uk

Yea there's a few where it was an advisory one year and a fail the next.

I'm on my way back up North, I'll drop you an email

Anything you specifically want me to check for you Casper?

No thank you Kenbw2. The welding is beyond me as i only just started to teach myself. A welder should be part of the LDV Convoy tool kit big_smile

Re: Dispatch 1.9TD for spares (24k engine, subframe) or repair

Living on the Coast at Helensburgh maybe does't help matters............. Looks like whats been thrown up by the Clyde and youve driven through as the outer sill skins look fresh.... Ive just had mine (sills) dealt with again because of mostly standing idle over best part of last year and I obviously never delt with blistering issue entirely the first time..............

Seems mine is exact oposite undeneath is actually very good............. The underseal coat looks breached and thats got to be salty air dampness got in there or as I said maybe salty puddles...... Still it's nearly 20 yrs old and looks to be able to provide a good few decent low mileage parts

Re: Dispatch 1.9TD for spares (24k engine, subframe) or repair

I’ve tried to keep it off the salty winter roads and garaged as far as possible since it came to Helensburgh but I think its Hebridean origins have taken their toll.  Hopefully someone can make good use of the parts; had a great run down to Manchester and back earlier this week

Re: Dispatch 1.9TD for spares (24k engine, subframe) or repair

Spending many a year on the islands on and off ferries or just the fact of being on the islands rough weather and salty moist air is never far away............ In the early/mid 80's as a nipper I lived just outside Turnberry right on the clyde coast. (Area famous for Ayrshire potatoes) I had A MK2 Ford Escort and by the time it was 6 years old it was rotten like a Pear ....... A friend had a similar problem with his Fiesta barely past it MOT when 4yrs old and scrapped at 5yrs through rot..... He had bought it new in 1988..... So vans done not bad living in that kind of enviroment......................

Re: Dispatch 1.9TD for spares (24k engine, subframe) or repair

To update the forum, I got brave (stupid?!) enough to take this on. Knowing that if the van itself was a lost cause, I had a Synergie needing a new engine.

So I went to my preferred garage, told them the situation and they said, hell, bosh it in for MOT, see what happens. Collected it from dauphin last Tuesday night, and drove it up to Bradford and it was brilliant. Tight steering, tight clutch and beautiful inside cosmetically. Hell, it even got to 70mph up hills!

Got the call from the garage on Wednesday and they said it wasn't devastating. Needed the two inner wheel box sections replacing, and the front and rear sills. Did need the fuel tank dropping as the filler neck was in the way. I said go for it, this van doesn't deserve to go to scrap.

So they spent a day and a half cutting and welding, and he made a point to show me just how much it had done. It looks great though, they've sealed it up good.

So it went to Preston (on its first ever veg oil!) ready for its outfitting as a campervan. The hard part is going to be moving all my stuff across while still living in one of them...

I'm glad to See that not everyone thinks a vehicle is sh*** once it becomes older than 5...... I agree with you a half decent prognosis and go from there only problem with rot is did you cut deep enough........... but that's Living scared and a fear of dirty underware when bus gets you................

Only two pence worth I'd add is ........It rotted where the sealent was breached (All be it in a harsh island salty enviroment) "Give it a good coating underneath once in late summer (Sept) for on coming winter to reinforce the coating it got early Spring (April) of it's old engine oil"............Not necessarily seen as Eviroment friendly these days (Drips and you get filthy) but something in it's old Oil doesnt half get into the surface rusty bit and grip so much better than New oil and it's cheaper than the ....... DP60 Rust proofer which I'm currently trying to apply between showers (storms).....................(The other stuff Ive used to good affect on my now 25yr old Lada that I got before it was 3yrs is Chainsaw (bar) oil it's stickyer than normal engine oil and clings better)

Anyway whatever Enjoy the van and many happy travels it looks as though your set for good wee while...................
