The whole while I've had my dispatch the temp gauge has never went past 70 driving, but if I let it idle it will get up to half way...anyway its been about a year since I changed the senor in the expansion tank and the one down near the fuel filter, tonight I found when out for a run that the gauge decided to run all the way up to maximum heat and I was given the stop sign on the dash... as soon as I turned the heater up the gauge dropped, but then continued to fluctuate from cold to fully hot all the way home.
On getting home I find its runnning the cooling fan (I'd only done 7 miles) Radiator not hot to the touch, top hose warm, bottom house cold-ish (Always been like that even with a new thermostat), pop top off coolant bottle and the level looks OK - Could this be the sender at the diesel pump and/or the level indicator in the bottle/expansion tank? I'd have had expected to get more than a year and 3k miles out them, hence my asking.
Thanks,
-Stu.

... as I removed it I had a bit of copper and a water stream heading for my eye....
Sorry, Stu - what does this mean. Is the sensor broken up? Where did the copper come from?

Hi bud, sorry for not being clear I was quite tired while posting (Insomnia), basically as I removed the temp sensor I and faced it up towards me to look at it, it had a crack in brear the threads meet the nut kind of thing and as I tilted it back towards where I removed it the end fell off.. but was then pushed up towards me by the coolant that had eventually decided to surge out lol. When I look at the old sensor it;s had a crack for a while, perhaps I over torqued it when putting it in, I've since been much gentler with the new one I got tonight and added a couple of washers to it.

Update on the above, for the first time since getting the van my temp gauge now almost gets to half way when driving, and it seems the timing is no longer being retarded as it's pulling a lot better, I mean it's still slow but does seem happier getting to 70 and running out of puff, instead of running out at 55/60 and having to wring its neck to get to 70!

Glad you got it sorted. My fuel gauge has played up ever since I've had the van - 14 years. It always overestimates the level by quarter of a tank. So if tank's almost empty - it says quarter full, if it's actually a quarter full - gauge says half full..............and so on.
Suppose it's the sender and should get around to fixing it, but I've lived with it so long I'm used to it.

Mine behaves like this, the engine actually cuts out just under quarter of a tank
But, it's definitely got quarter of a tank left in it. I know this because:
- I can only get 75 litres in - on my previous vehicles I could get at least 10-15 more in on an empty tank
- I actually took the tank off and drained at least 20 litres out of it
I replaced the sender, no change. I reckon my tank is bowed in the middle or something
