Definitely the pump. And as tee-cee said it could very well be a solenoid ticking in there somewhere. I will try to record the sound sometimes today... even though its not that cold outside today. Only -12C...
Vaz: sorry but this isn’t helpful. The only thing I want to know is if the ticking sound from the pump is normal or not. Facts remain... the car is hard to start below-15C. And the noise is more destinct below that temperature.
Casper, we have down to -30C these days, but as I said, the sound is there before start. Could be a solenoid, though. As for the fuel turning to goop, we have winter-diesel in Norway.
Casper, the noise is coming before starting, when the glow plugs are on. And the sound is definitely coming from the pump.
It is very cold here now, and my poor Dispatch is struggling to start in the morning. As I wait for the glow plugs to get warm, I have noticed a sound coming from the engine. Opened the bonnet and listened... it comes from the pump. Some sort of a rattle noise, following the glowing light. Any idea of what it might be?
My van has a strange, howling sound from the exhaust system. If anyone remember those colorful plastic tubes we used to swirl around when we where kids... that's the sound my exhaust makes. Most noticeable under load, and around 2-2500 RPM. Possible catalytic converter failing? (hasn't come around to killing it yet)
Found the connector for the needle lift sensor the other day... Had a little bit of water in it, so I dried it up and sprayed some electronic cleaner in it. No change in how the van runs, so I decided to unplug the sensor while the engine was still running... Well it seems that the sensor is functioning... the enginge had a bit of a fit with the sensor unplugged.
So I am none the wiser...
Where is the plug for the advance solenoid? It will be the next to check out...
Thanks, Vaz. I was thinking more in the way of replacing the cat with a piece of steel-pipe. The rest of my exhaustsystem looks OK.
Thinking about "killing" the cat... What are the pipesize, outer diameter of the cat?
Quite a few checking points... This morning I drove straight off with cold engine... shuddered badly. Started up again after 3 hours, still shuddering... drove 500m and stopped. Started up again after 5 minutes and drove off. No shuddering and felt like all the power was back. This is strange... Could it be something electrical?
Yeah. I am still learning about this engine. The pump is partially electric part mechanical controlled. But the electric part varies from car to car, and that makes it a bit difficult. Some has electric advance, some have mechanical, and I haven’t found out which I have yet. And if my engine has the needle lift sensor on one of the injectors or not... The one thing I do know, is the doesn’t run smoothly at medium load and medium throttle.
Filter has been changed, and the air intake cleaned when I replaced the glow plugs.
Checked the TPS, and it was at 1 volt on idle. It was impossible to get it up to 2,45 as the tag stated. Got it up to about 2 volts... So I will see after driving to work tomorrow.
Drove to work today, with the MAF unplugged... no difference, what so ever. Will check the TPS this afternoon, see if the voltage equals the one written on the tag.
Thanks, Tee_Cee. So with the EGR vacuum tubes blocked off, the MAF is actually redundant?
Well guys.
This is the start of a thread wich i hope will be long and educational. First up is something that has been bothering me for a while. I can't seem to find out anything about the purpose of the throttle pos sensor and the MAF sensor. Is the only purpose of these sensors emission control/EGR, or is it more to it than that? Is there some more advanced engine-control there somewhere?
Secondly I would greatly appreciate a complete diagram of the vacuum system of this engine.
Good one! The top it is... when I get to it, that is. BTW, what kind of oil goes in the servo-steering?
Nice guide, but I was wondering a bit about filling the gearbox from the top, since the filler cap is on the side. Risk of overfilling?
Thanks. It’s not in the way of some sorts, I just wondered what it was for.
Hi. I plan to install reverse sensors on my van, and because of that I needed to remove the rear bumper. Behind the left rear wheel I found a black plastic box with ventilation slots on it. What is its purpose?
They say the Lofoten isles are not to be missed even if things around that location are a little pricey...........
The Lofoten isles are definitly something you should try out, despite the Norwegian prices. But do in the summer, or you will miss out on the midnight sun...
Asking me? If you buy the lower hose, it includes all those parts. As for the heater, there are two different types. One that goes on the thin hose up to the oil cooler, an one for the bigger hose up behind the engine. Not sure which is the best, though.
That helps, Ken. I've marked where the heater goes. A bit difficult to see from the picture the thickness at that spot... guessing 36mm from the description that says 16-36mm?
That might work... The heater has be in a vertical part of the hose, so I will have to place it where the hose goes up in the back of the engine. I could of course just cut it, and take my other car to pick up a heater...
Thanks, OAT.
Well I've tried to search every place that sell these hoses, and not a single one of them list the measures. Could of course take it off an measure it, but these heaters is to be placed vertically, and the hose is not the same diameter at the ends as it is in the middle... I could measure the outside diameter and calculate the inner, but then I would have to know the wall thickness... wich I dont.
