Cheers, off to see my engineer friend tonight. Will be gutting to have spent £1500 on this van, only to have it fail on emissions. Fingers all crossed

So, i'm driving around with my 'new' DW10 and fresh turbo fitted. The performance and acceleration of the van can now be described as stunning, in comparison with before. But naturally, there's a new problem (being a Citroen).

Puffs of black smoke under acceleration. No smoke at idle, nothing visible under moderate acceleration. But give it more beans and there is a definite blast of black sooty smoke. If I push the throttle all the way down, it's definitely noticeable.

Should i worry, particularly about the emissions test at MOT, or is this normal?

Cheers Casper
Got problems in that department so will be looking at it

Morning all. Can anyone tell me where the 'butterfly valve' in the air intake system is located on a Dispatch?

I'm replacing my MAF sensor but have heard that this valve can also cause problems if it gets stuck. Just want to check it to cure my acceleration flat spot.

Thanks

My 16 year-old Dispatch is at the 'doctors'. Not being a competent mechanic, i've handed her over to a friend of a friend to get the engine replaced after four years and 10,000+ miles with a blowing head gasket.

According to the texts i've been getting today, the old RHZ lump is now out. The 'doctor' has used the word 'f*cked' to describe the MAF meter, the bottom engine mount and the gear linkages ???

But he does have a brand new turbo, alternator, water pump, belts, hoses, gasket and clutch  to work with.

Plus new Monroe shocks and springs all round, but that's for later in the year.

All told, my van is having about two grand invested in it. This for a vehicle worth about £500.

Gotta get the basics right before starting the camper conversion....

I'm a worried man today. Please send Brenda your thoughts and prayers ?

I wouldn't mind knowing this info too. Also whether it's possible to fit this engine into a Mk1 Dispatch. Next time I'm in Yeomans Citroen in Exeter, I'll ask if anyone knows. Following...

Ah i see you're from Scotland so you probably already knew that lol

#83 Re: General Discussion » A few days grabbed » 2019-08-22 22:55:02

That's a nice road trip story and great looking van...interested in how you did the windows. If you're ever up near Oban again, Loch Awe and Ben Cruachan are worth a visit. I camped there on my first trip in Brenda (dispatch Hdi) some years ago, when she was still my courier van).

#84 Re: Maintenance » 'New' engine has arrived! » 2019-08-22 22:38:22

Yup the manifold will be coming off for a clean i think. Don't want any more cack getting in there...

#85 Re: Maintenance » 'New' engine has arrived! » 2019-08-22 20:10:50

Well, this engine was £360; what appeals to me is the low mileage, as my van has done 185k...so if the mileage is correct, it'll be like driving a new van. My plan is to get together with a mechanic friend and have a close look at it first, before I go to the trouble of sending it back to Oldham. With that much gunge on the inside of the manifold (and it is all the way through it, 1-2mm thick in places), do you think there's likely to be damage inside the combustion chambers, or would it burn off once running?

Brenda's 'new' engine arrived today, supposedly from a Scudo JTD with only 76k on it. The inlet manifold, however, is clagged with thick, sludgy oil. Is it likely that the donor vehicle suffered turbo failure, and should I be worried about the internals? The engine is under a 3-month warranty.

Hi Forum. Can anyone recommend the best oil to use in (1) the engine and (2) the gearbox of my van please?  She's about to receive a new engine which will be the BTED+RHZ and i want to make the right choice (up till now i've been using any brand of 10w/50).
Cheers smile

#89 Re: Maintenance » 2005 Scudo Rear Springs Help! » 2019-07-10 22:18:25

Just saw this old post and thought i'd share my solution. For our Dispatch (which functions as a mobile shed and occasional camper) I made a wooden platform which takes a 4'6" mattress on top, with storage trays underneath. It has a leg in each corner. We carry around a few small, sturdy blocks of wood which you place under the platform legs in whichever way you need to achieve a level sleeping area. So you can even park sideways on a hill if you have to. A free-of-charge system...a lot cheaper than altering your rear springs?

Thanks very much for your help Ken, I will advise my mate who is doing Brenda's heart transplant operation (with me as junior assistant). Wish us luck!!!!

Hey thanks. It's VF7BYRHZB86079816, with engine number DYPY4001535.

Ok will try that, thanks. They didn't recognise my reg no at the local Citroen dealer. Too old apparently. Pfft!

Hello forum. Finally, after three years of light duties due to a leaking head gasket, Brenda is going to get her new engine. My question is, what am i looking at for the Citroen Dispatch HDi900 Enterprise (2004)? I can't see the designation on the old block so was hoping someone could advise which engine will fit with the existing gearbox. ATED or BTED or something else?

If anyone has the correct engine for sale in good condition, please let me know. Cheers ;-)

#95 Re: Maintenance » Coolant level rising and falling - water usage etc » 2019-01-09 20:32:09

I'm by no means an expert  ... It's just how I followed (and still do) costs+reliability running my own lorries national and Europe wide (5 years on mostly European work for us  980,000kms and this is low average)........ bare in mind these vehicles are grafting and not moving NOT EARNING

Yep I totally get that Vaz. Brenda was my business hack. I tramped, multidropped and couriered all over the UK, including Scotland (Oban) and London. Used to sleep in the back between jobs. Trouble was, when you picked up a Euro crate, there was no room to kip. B+B was the only option, which hurt my profits.

It would be Devon to London - Yorkshire - Scotland - Lancashire - Midlands - Wales - Devon, over the week. I think this is why I have a strong bond with my van. Daft I know. But let's see what happens...

#96 Re: Maintenance » Coolant level rising and falling - water usage etc » 2019-01-09 20:18:21

I have contacted my mate. He fixes brand-new Merc trucks. Says he is going to do the job outside my house.

We are going to pull the head off and assess where to go from there.

So - Brenda will either be fixed up ready for another 50k miles on the original motor

Or will be fitted with a replacement lump.

Other jobs to do: patch weld on the n/s rear sill area....cv boots....new shocks. That's it.

As you can tell, I am rather attached to this particular vehicle.

Watch them get rarer and rarer over the next 5 or so years - then disappear completely, like the 305 van or Visa.....it will happen.... :-)

Ultimate goal: make Brenda fully electric.....anyone done this yet? lol

#97 Re: Maintenance » Coolant level rising and falling - water usage etc » 2019-01-08 23:22:53

Oh dear. OK, thanks guys...

Brenda has a new MOT, so i think the course of action is going to be light duties and local runs only. No more M5 or A38 work....
She will do tip runs, haul manure and be a camper at the odd local music festival this year.

In a way, it's been good to hear this news because now i know I have to either get the gasket done or go for a rebuild/recon. What would you all advise for a 185k HDi? The engine always passes its emission tests and is still smooth and quite strong.

Hoping that this year's work will permit a full resto for this van. I've had it for eight years now and it has often let me down. Love it :-)

My Dispatch 900 'Brenda' has come through a number of illnesses in recent years' the worst of which was chronic overheating caused by a seized thermostat. Since replacing that, along with fitting a brand new radiator, expansion tank and cap, Brenda has now returned to relative reliability. She will still run hot if thrashed up a long hill, but no longer overheats or blows seals.

However, the water level in her system rises and falls quite dramatically - the red 'low-water' light will come on and off constantly until she reaches full temperature' when it goes out. Then it tends to re-illuminate briefly after a long run.

I have to top up the system regularly - she requires about a teacup full of water a week when in daily use (or about every 100 miles). The water is blowing out of the cap; you can see white deposits on the engine.

There is no mayonnaise evident in the oil, and no rainbows in the coolant. She doesn't smoke or steam, and pulls strongly. This behaviour has been consistent for the last couple of years, during which time I have covered 10k without issues.

Anyone recognise these symptoms?

Hi folks
I have a long-standing problem with my '04 Dispatch 2.0HDi. When accelerating hard, particularly on a motorway sliproad or between 50 and 70mph, or when attempting to speed up on the motorway in 5th, there is a distinct double hesitation and lack of power. It seems to be always at the same point in the rev range, and fairly predictable - has been this way for a year and started after I dumped a bottle of injector cleaner in the (full) diesel tank.
When pulling away up a steep hill, it can also manifest itself at low revs and feels like turbo lag. Yet when the turbo kicks in, the boost seems as strong as ever.
Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers
