worked for me
Casper wrote:At what you are saying i would be more prone to think (Im no mechanic) its the valve seals. When parked overnight the oil will seep down into the top of the pistons. When starting up you will burn it off and be fine for the day. Did you take them plugs out a cold engine? If so that may explain my theory more. Did you pay much for the van? You may end up with a money pit but as you need it for work you will keep throwing good money at bad. Get a compression test and see what the pros say. You could end up paying for that van two or three times over. I paid 800 for mine and apart from the odd starting issue its been great.
Took van for a good drive out so engine was hot when plugs came out as I done oil and filters at the same time. All 4 plugs came straight out not a problem with any of them. Van cost 700 and was only meant to be a stop gap van to get me started and its sods law it will cost me a fortune?

air intake was took out and egr was unscrewed and cleaned out aswell. Egr had about 5mm of gunk on the inside walls of it so that was all cleaned of and intake sprayed with carb cleaner and washed out and left to dry. As for oil usage I've had the van just over a month and I havnt noticed any oil usage at all before I changed oil it was sat in the right place on district and after service its sat at the full mark and hasn't moved.
check the plugs the easiest way is to conect to a battery i hd 4 out on mine , if the timing is out then there would be a diesel at the wrong time helping to foul the plugs
have you tried a code read ?
i had a berlingo with similar issues and i was the sprocket on the timing belt , the woodruff key area was splitting allowing incorrect cam timing ...
where are you based ?

sensible offer or maybe a trade ....
Check that the clip holding the throttle cable in place is set in the correct place. If it's too close to the end of the cable, (too tight) that could be the problem. Try pulling the clip off and pushing the cable further into the hole on the throttle cable bracket a few notches and see if that helps. If it isn't that then you should try adjusting the tick over adjustment.
was a combination of sticky levers on the pump and a faulty waxstat
someone said mondeo wheels fit ??

Guessing it maybe HDi if the fuel filter housing is problematic, but only a guess. The one on my Scudo Jtd/HDi is a pain to re-seal after it's been apart for a new filter.
Smart looking van, Dellboy. Mine's a silver/grey Dynamic. Always thought that colour looks good on these. Luckily with the Dynamic you get full size hubcaps that completely cover the grotty wheels underneath. And after 17 years, amazingly it still has all 4 caps still on. Fronts getting a little chewed round the edges now though.
fuel filter was leaking out of the pump area
Get some new wheels on that and it'll look very clean and tidy, great catch and congrats on bringing it back from an untimely death.
Wanna share a few deets? Age, engine etc?
53 plate 1.9 D pure power 68bhp wheels are a sticking point currently on 14inch so whats the way to go ?
So after aquiring the van that wouldnt start from a mate who didnt want to spend money on it it now starts and runs and passed its MOT .....
Had to do the glow plugs replaced the fuel filter housing and sort the fast ideal (the waxstat didnt work after doing the glow plugs and some lomkage on the pump was sticky )
As you can see in the pics the wheels are crap so they are on the list at the same time as front discs and pads . (next week weather permiting )
Inside the ashtray cover is broken and the seats are filthy but other than that its all good .
So the camper conversion begins
list of bits to find are a 'car' rear headlining and maybe the panels a osr light as its cracked (but legal) an ashtray and maybe a towbar and some wheel paint ...
before you do the cables check my quote on your other post (i do it for a living )
Well I've been to the garage, and got the diagnosis. They're a highly recommended garage, so trust them about as far as you would trust a garage - slightly more than very little.
They said the gear problems are down to worn cables. Still doubt this because they were fine before clutch done. Can popping the cables off gearbox for clutch change really cause them to play up? OK, so I'm going to take the advice and change the cables. Two garages can't be wrong, can they?
Gearbox oil leak/weep turns out to be driveshaft seal. Will get new seal fitted - suppose it got damaged when they removed driveshafts to do clutch. Can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs! The gearbox oil will get changed for the third time in less than 6 months. I changed it last year because it was long overdue. Then it got changed again when they drained it because clutch went. Now it will have to be drained 3rd time because there's no level plug on the ML5C box. So only way of knowing it's the right amount in there is drain it out again and put 1.85 litres of 75W80 in.
But the big shock. Quote for supply and fit new cables and d/shaft seal = £632!!!! This is for Fiat parts. I'm guessing looking online that the cables from Fiat are approx £200 to £300 inc the VAT. Told them I'd think about it. Looks like I've sourced a new, genuine OE cable for £67 delivered so will try to DIY that if not too difficult. The driveshaft seal will be done by garage.
Ive got a old (03) dispatch which had a notchy gear change so before splashing out remove the gearbox end of the cables and clean and grease the points . Refit the cables remove the cab end stick cover and spray a light oil (wd40) into the cables and work the gears , then as the change gets easier spray some grease into the cables (dont be tight with either ) then drive it and hopefully smile .
pay the £300 the solid flywheels are a bodge (especially the ECP ones )
