What's the bigger van?

That red van is a legend.

I use a gas Trangia outside, if it's raining then I get a takeaway!

Hi, I mentioned this a while ago.
To get the van charging I have to rev her up a bit, the ignition light isnt working but the heater motor doesn't work either unless I rev her up. You can hear a relay kick in when I rev her and everything is fine after this.
Any thoughts??
Cheers

#9 Re: Camper Conversions » Silverdale/Arnside? » 2023-06-20 06:14:55

Parked at the RSPB car park but a couple in a BMW decided to have an all night row, my gf on her first van trip asked if it was normal.
Used the National Trust car park instead.

Car park at Wharton Crag.  I think it now has no overnighting signs and height barriers but as I have been using it for decades I claim usage rights.  Peregrine's, little owl and ravens nesting on the crag.  Good walks if you don't mind hills.
Also nearby is a secluded nature reserve cp near the railway line.  Turn off to coast just near level crossing.
I particularly like Jenny Browns Point.  Awkward spot at end of lane with no passing places.  Tiny pitch with no level at gated entry to field that is the only turning point at the end of the lane.  Good for evening arrival and be willing to move if it gets busy during the day.  Great sunsets and view across the bay and a bench to sit on and enjoy them.
Used to be a great spot along the front next to Red Bank Farm but since the camp site developed I think there are now no overnighting.signs.
Similar around Arnside.  There used to be camping on a couple of beaches, but I think it's been stoped now.  Good place to park up for the day though right on the beach.

"Vanlife" is eating itself!

I know what you mean about Jenny Brown's Point. I might also check out the nature reserve car park.

I'll take a look at that one, far end could be ideal.

To get my blower to work (and to make sure the battery is charging) I have to rev her up a bit until I hear something (a relay?) click.

When replacing the fuel leak off return I would advise cutting the pipe off the fuel thermostat housing.
I tried to pull mine of it this morning and snapped the plastic spigot off.
Ouch!

Damn now you're making me want to go. There's nowhere in the UK like the highlands. So remote and isolated, I love it. How is it for finding places to park up? Are they all full of campers now?

I'd wait for better weather tbh.
There's loads of places to lie up, I tend to stick to places that I know. I might head over to the Ardnamurchan peninsula next time for some variation.
There's quite a few camper vans about already but most head for proper sites, Scotland is big enough for everyone though!

Fancied a few days away.
Shot up the M6, A74(M) etc to Gourock and crossed The Clyde (£20, like everything else it's gone up in price) to Dunoon, spent the night at Jubilee Point on Loch Eck.
Next day drove to Inveraray, on through Glen Orchy, over Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, Ft William, north and north again. Over the Mam Ratagan to Glenelg, spent the evening on the beach at Sandaig before back tracking to spend the night on the Mam Ratagan.
Next day hit the road to Kyle of Lochalsh, Plockton, Stromeferry etc, turned left on to the NC500 went over the Applecross Pass to Torridon, had a sleep in the woods before heading towards Inverness and south to Ft William, stayed outside of Glencoe with a few other camper vans.
Weather was crap so headed home.
The fuel injector return pipe was leaking and only getting worse, need to buy a quality replacement and not another cheap one.
Good trip, weather crap.
The van is a legend 211,000 miles on it.

Ended up getting them replaced at a local diesel specialist, all 4 were dead!
£160 didn't think that was a bad price.

Sounds like a good first thing. Are you going to update this thread? smile

I ended up using the van to commute this week to see if would stand up to daily use...
...which it has done so far.
35 minute commute each morning with lights on, and return.
Starting fine, although it might benefit from glow plugs.
Hell, I might even take a trip in a few weeks time...
...probably Dumf & Gall, just for a change!!

I know you're trying to keep it original but I bought a rubber checker plate pattern mat that goes across both sides, looks good and practical too!

Hi everybody.
I'm falling out of love with my van.
Its had a new battery and alternator about two years ago.
It keeps losing charge, there must be a parasitic drain or something.
I'm going to charge the battery and leave it disconnected, measuring the voltage over a few days to see how it stands up.
I'm going to disconnect the radio and connect the battery and see if the battery drops over time.
Failing that I'll have to do the old connecting an ammeter and removing fuses investigation.
Loved it when she was working properly...

#22 Re: General Discussion » Brake lights » 2021-12-16 19:38:26

I had this problem a few years ago.
The body of the brake light switch was loose in the mounting, when you pressed the brake it pushed the switch out of the mount.
I think I used a blob of silicone sealant to keep it in place.

She's getting a bit sluggish to start, and I'm fairly sure that the last time I plugged her in it gave a glow plug code.

How easy is it to replace the glow plugs on this engine?
I've had a look and the access isnt great it seems.
I'm worried about anything going wrong.

Any thoughts??
