Hi Father Stone, welcome to the forum.
I see you say its running ok at the moment, I would get it plugged in to a diagnostic device as the fault may well still be in the memory.
Diagnostic device is my first port of call when it looks like an electronic fault.
Oh right, I see what you mean. Never done or had that done. I even took it to a specialist diesel place who checked it over and said the boost pipes needed doing and that there was nothing wrong with the injectors. I took the injectors out and had them tested by an injector specialist who found 2 of the 4 were completely shot and the other 2 very nearly shot too.
I've still got a bit of black smoke under acceleration, so the search for the cause continues.
Hi tee_cee, I not sure if it was the cause of the black smoke to be honest, but when I'd replaced all the other items I found an exhaust gas leak which turned out to be coming from the egr gasket.
I had taken the van to my local garage regarding the black smoke and they said they couldn't find anything wrong!! It passes the smoke test because when stationary the van limits the rev's to around 2 - 2500 rpm and the black smoke occurred under acceleration.
I'm hoping this is the last mechanical thing for a while, as currently trying to concentrate on converting to a camper/day van.
You're not wrong there tee_cee!
Swapped it out today for the princely some of £96. Not to bad I suppose but now found another pipe to the turbo that will need replacing as the seal onto the turbo has failed. Trip to Peugeot in the morning
So this happened today - N/S Drive Shaft failed with an almighty bang, whilst pulling out on to a main road. Luckily not much traffic about , and managed to get it in the correct lane and out of danger of being hit!
New shaft & hub (just in case) ordered up, so that's tomorrows job sorted!
Anyone else had this happen?
Hi,
I also had a black smoke issue with my 09 1.6 expert. Same engine I believe.
To cure mine was a long and painful experience at least financially. I ended up replacing the following:
Turbo
Turbo oil feed pipe
Boost pipes to inter cooler
Air inlet manifold
4 injectors
Egr valve gasket
Alas, she still smokes a little but the black smoke has gone.
I would check all the above, I found oil in the inter cooler and needed up having it professionally cleaned and tested. Took the injectors out which is when I found the air inlet manifold to be knackered, and oil in 2 of the injectors. Found holes in the boost pipes, so replaced them.
Only when I'd put it all back together with new parts did I then find the leak from the egr valve, so took that off and found that the seal was virtually nonexistent apart from he Carbon build up almost blocking it.
Hope this helps you a little.
Mike
Welcome along Chri5, sounds like an interesting project. Look forward to seeing the progress
vaz - please don't mention poorly injectors
I recently had to replace all 4, the turbo, turbo oil feed pipe, air intake manifold and the boost pipes from the intercooler. Cost a small fortune - but for now at least she's running a lot better.
I'll say one thing though, my 53 plate 1.9D expert's engine was fairly bullet proof! The one issue I did have with it was a split wire to a sensor, but once that was rectified it ran like a dream. I think the little van is still on the road too somewhere!
I'm currently in the process of converting my LWB High Roof Expert into a camper, but to be honest I won't be bothering even trying to get the V5 changed. Mainly because I don't won't to have to put graphics down the side etc. just to be able to get it changed, and like most people who own or even use vans the different speed limits don't usually get followed.
I suppose they have now made it very difficult for self built camper conversions to be updated on the V5. To me it appears that the people who make these decisions at DVLA etc don't really know or understand the self build market and therefore have a very limited concept of what a motor caravan is or even can be.
I have the 1.6 also. Stupid question but, have you changed the battery? As you didn't mention that you'd changed it. The last time I had starting issues with mine it turned out to be the battery! I changed the starter motor first and nothing, to be fair though it would bump start.
Also, found out when I replaced the battery that the previous owner had fitted the wrong size of battery. So no wonder it failed!!
DVLA have already released a list of standard external features that they want to see in order to change the classification. See the link below:
On my previous van I fitted a set of alloy wheels from the 807. Went straight on and looked pretty good too.
Just seen this via a Facebook group I'm o :
https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati … t-features
I can't make it myself this time, but interested in the next 1 ?
If you can post your vin number we can check which engine and gearbox you have then see which other vehicles it was fitted in.
I know that when I had a problem with my gearbox, I purchased a used gearbox as a temporary measure whilst mine was being rebuilt. However, the company I used were supposed to be sending an exact match but didn't, and whilst it fitted onto the engine the gear linkage was just slightly out and getting into the gears was difficult. This company said that they swapped this model of gear box into the van all the time!
I think they're a little expensive from the dealer. Have you tried talking to a few breakers? Although I think you might find that they only want to include the belt with the seat.
Which version software are you using?
Is it a Chinese chipset?
Usually if it wont communicate it will down to the software or chipset. I have a 2009 expert and use diagbox with no issues, it can also be used with the dispatch, which you're already aware.
If memory serves me right, my aux belt used to like moving off the pulley's just not all the way! I replaced it at same time as doing the timing belt & water pump, like you say drivers wheel off and the inner wheel arch, hence why I changed the aux belt at same time as timing.
On a side note, did find out that the timing was out a tad more than the allowed tolerances! Ended up spending lots of money on other parts after that though. Found the air intake manifold was broken, 2 of the 4 injectors knackered and the other 2 not far behind, turbo knackered which meant new oil feed pipe to turbo, and then after all that found the egr gasket to be well virtually not there.
My van is the 1.6 90hp too.
Thanks for the heads up OAT, I was intending on fitting a swivel to the passenger side. The issue I have with the 207cc seats is that the runner is about 2 inches wider apart than the existing van seat runner, so currently thinking of the best way to adapt the existing sub frame to enable figment.
Hi Graydog, thank you for getting back to me
I've purchased a pair of peugeot 207cc leather seats which I thought might line up with the existing holes but alas no! Might go down the route of adapting the existing subframes to make them fit.
Yes the extra height would come in handy for anyone over 6ft! Not that I'm in that club.
Update: 20ucc leather seats do not fit the subframe base of the expert
Now looking into others for a fit.
Graydog, did the x-trail fit ok on the drivers subframe? What year x-trail were your seats from please?
Hi BlueBuoyDesign,
Welcome to the forum
I would say that the better option would be to do an engine swap, would it be the easiest option not entirely sure having never done one. I used to have a 1.9D Expert and it performed quite well even when fully loaded.
It may be that there is a fault that needs rectifying to regain the lost power.
I'm sure one of the other members will be along shortly who may be able to offer a more technical insight.
Mike
Did you get sorted?
So, the steering wheel in the van was looking a little worse for wear! So the decision to replace it was made!
I plumbed for a Peugeot 207cc leather steering wheel, purchased off ebay for a very reasonable £60 delivered. Condition is like new!
So the big question was would it fit, having checked on service box I was pretty sure it would fit nicely. Any hows, old airbag removed and then steering wheel. A fairly straight forward affair, release air bag via spring release through hole at base of steering wheel then pull off carefully. Disconnect the wiring connector and earth terminal.
Remove the securing screw and gently knock rear of steering wheel towards the rear of the vehicle, mine came off quite easily which I wasn't expecting!
New Wheel offered up to steering column and fits perfectly, securing screw refitted and torqued to specified setting of 20Nm, next wiring looms refitted to original air bag and pushed into place.
Reconnected battery, and ignition turned on via open window! Just in case!

A little update, I've recently purchased the OBD adapter and necessary software. Seems to be working well.
Should anybody need plugging in to it in the localish vicinity then just give me a shout.
